AT&T abruptly pulls free Wi-Fi for Apple iPhone info from site

“Only hours after posting information that indicated iPhone owners would receive free access to AT&T’s public wireless hotspots, the company pulled all references to the service from its Web site,” Gregg Keizer reports for Computerworld.

“By 5pm EDT Thursday, the page dedicated to AT&T’s subscriber plans for Apple’s iPhone has been stripped of all mention of Wi-Fi hotspot access,” Keizer reports.

Keizer reports, “Earlier in the day, the AT&T site noted that ‘Access to AT&T Wi-Fi hot spots’ was included in all iPhone subscriber plans, with additional details that spelled out the extent of that access. ‘Unlimited Data (e-mail and Web), 200 SMS text messages and access to AT&T’s more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hot spots, including Starbucks all for use in the U.S. Wi-Fi available at U.S. company operated Starbucks locations equipped with a hot spot.'”

“Hours later, all of that WiFi info had been scrubbed from the site,” Keizer reports.

  1. @ Murasaki:

Not necessarily – maybe they’re still in the testing phase and not ready for general rollout. Whatever the case may be, it’s obvious this is coming, probably soon, in some form or another.

  2. Maybe the deal to oust T-mobile from Starbucks has not worked out…

follow the money for most answers.

    For fun:
Formula 1 in Turkey this weekend.
Chelsea & ManU for the title on Sunday.

  3. This is why Americans list their mobile operator as one of their worst retail relationships in the world.

These asshats are going to dethrone the Keystone Cops.

  4. And their CEO “earns” millions a year. One would guess that such a well heeled company would have at least some semblance of having their shit together B4 going public with a service.

  5. Most likely the web person was putting the site together and uploaded it to the public pages instead of the internal site for verification and pre-approval. We will most likely see a very similar page in the near future.

  6. Because all iPhone on AT&Ts;network have unlimited network access via the phone network, it would only benefit AT&T;to offload this traffic when possible to wifi hot spots.

  7. Funny, I have ATT land-line service and DSL and they sent an email a week ago stating that anyone who has DSL service (but not including the base level DSL svc or dial up) will get the same free hotspot access. They have not sent a follow up saying they are pulling that! I guess the proof is in going the the Star*ukcs and trying it out.

  8. Here’s the deal… I have seen mention in a few different places online, including MDN (perhaps I spend too much time here), where individual people have had luck, connecting for free, with their iPhones, at Starbucks.

My guess is that they are either still wrapping up the infrastructure, or they have recently completed it, but they are holding off on the announcement until WWDC.

Apple probably caught wind of the cat being let out of the bag on AT&T;’s website, and they sent their iThugs over to “diplomatically ask them to pretty please knock it off.” ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

    Forever United!

Go Red Devils. Beat Wigan Sunday then wear Chelsea out in Moscow on the 21st.

PS- as a two iPhone family, put us down for a yes to free wi-fi, and below is my favorite Man United song, search You Tube for it.

    “United Rule”

    “See I will
    Always
    Love the Reds so much
We are the team nobody else can touch

    United
    I love them
They’re the only team I like
    The other ones are shi*e
And now Im gonna tell you how I feel…”

Actually, after putting the lyrics here (and cleaning them up), this is still way out of line for a site where good wholesome kids might come for their Mac news. I’ll just skip down to the part about Chelsea and anyone interested can search You Tube for some excellent versions of this song. It’s a ‘must have’ for any Manchester United fan.

… “And Chelsea who do you think you are
    Its been 50 long years
    Its gonna end in tears
You’ll never be as big as Man United”
