“Turns out a software issue is responsible for reports of dramatic drops in data upload speeds in some regions of the country, including New York and Philadelphia,” Paczkowski reports. “AT&T tells me that a software defect in some of Alcatel-Lucent’s equipment has been crippling 3G HSUPA performance in the markets in which it’s been deployed.”
Paczkowski reports, “The good news is Alcatel-Lucent is working on a fix. The bad news is AT&T doesn’t yet have an ETA for its delivery.”

AT&T’s explanation could very well be true. But I get suspicious when it is always someone else’s fault, when the finger is always pointing outwards. I’d like more transparency and disclosure from AT&T.

Apple, specifically Steve Jobs: We’re not gonna buy anymore of your fuckin’ devices if you don’t have the support structure in place before you release them. Tell your suppliers to get their shit together! The iPhone is not a phone without the ability to make calls. Screw movie downloads if YOU can’t get the internet suppliers to give us the speed to download movies. We’ve had enough bullshit from corporations in America. We’re mad as Hell and we’re not gonna take it anymore!

to my friends. Takes some 5 minutes. No problem.
While I’m certainly no fan of AT&T;, we just need to accept that if AT&T;hadn’t been second fiddle to Verizon back in 2006 and was desperately trying to add to its customer base, we likely wouldn’t have the iPhone today. AT&T;did something no other entrenched phone carrier has ever done before, they allowed a hardware maker to retain virtually complete control over its hardware, something Verizon was unwilling to do, and appears still unwilling to do today, if rumors of no ongoing negotiations with Apple are true.
I too am aggravated at AT&T;’s appearing ongoing incompetence, but that’s just the way it is. There’s no way Apple will violate its contract terms with AT&T;, whatever they are. There’s also no way Apple will give up any of its control over the iPhone to Verizon when it contractually can just to add a few million more iPhone sales.
Apple is all about the user experience. That’s why it’s doing so well now. It’s unfortunate AT&T;is tarnishing that experience with its latest gaffs. If Verizon is willing to sell Apple’s iPhone by Apple’s rules, then fine. But the execs at Verizon still appear to me to be old school. To Apple, the carrier is a pipe. To Verizon, the hardware vendor’s product is a commodity to be squeezed for revenue by nickel and dime’ing every service and controlling access to its pipe after the sale. Maybe the Android phone expansion will temper their greed. We’ll see.

In all the tests I’ve run between a friend & I w/ similar signal strength, both using speedtest.net app on iphone & HTC Droid Incredible, the Verizon Incredible always wins… does in this test too! The HTC Aria on ATT was the slowest…. so how does ATT have the fastest 3G? Another lie by ATT?
VZW iPhone can’t come fast enough!
