AT&T Deactivates ‘View My Message’ service for iPhone users ahead of MMS launch
Tuesday, September 22, 2009 - 05:12 PM EST

Apple Online Store "Several AT&T iPhone users have reported today receiving text messages from the wireless carrier informing them that the company's View My Message workaround for receiving multimedia messages will be deactivated as accounts are prepared for MMS activation on September 25th," Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors.

AT&T Free Msg: Picture & video messaging (MMS) will be available for iPhone on 9/25. While we prepare your account for MMS capability, the current "view my message" experience will be turned off but your ability to send and receive text messages will not be affected.

Nooooo not my super secret secure picture displayer, I've got nothing now... Oh wait e-mail. Nevermind.

It's about time... "view my message" was a real pain in the arse. I don't care so much about *sending* MMS messages (there's email for that), but receiving them was so much of a hassle that I never bothered.

View My Message has never worked for me since iPhone 3G

So what about us 1st Gen iPhoners?

Sep 22, 09 - 05:37 pm Comment from: unapologetic atheist

I got my text from AT&T;. I know email is better but, until EVERYONE has a smart phone...MMS is necessary.

Sep 22, 09 - 06:16 pm Comment from: sbcmac

Yeah, so us 1st Gen early adopters get screwed? Or are they going to give us MMS too. I mean, is there REALLY some technical reason we can't recieve pictures in text messages? Even my 6 year old motorola phone could have done that.

So how do I know when I have the ability to MMS?
Its not a software update, so does that mean ATT waves its magic wand and my phone has a new button?

Sep 22, 09 - 06:39 pm Comment from: Jubei

Soon I'll get to see what the excitement is all about with MMs. Honestly I've never used it with all my previous smartass phones. I guess it's going to be super easy or special on the iPhone. wink

Sep 22, 09 - 07:17 pm Comment from: MacTony

Wow, that's why I'm with AT&T;. They are always on the cutting edge of technology. Seriously, it will be nice that my friends can't give me crap anymore.

Sep 22, 09 - 07:28 pm Comment from: Spark

MMS is for poor folks with old, passe phones. Unfortunately, that's most of mobile users. iPhone's push email is much better, but not great for the sister-in-law still stuck with a RAZR. Not sure I will ever use it, but it's nice our service has been dumbed down to communicate with the proletariate.

Sep 22, 09 - 07:50 pm Comment from: Msavwah

Joe,
I read it will be an iTunes update that enables mms

Sep 22, 09 - 07:54 pm Comment from: Msavwah

Err not a new version of iTunes but an update enabled via iTunes same way an iPhone os update happens. I think I read that from an AT&T;statement
so sync your shizzle on fri for mms

Sep 22, 09 - 08:45 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Good riddance.
And iTunes 9.0.1 fixes the minimize button.
Wonder if there is a hidden iPhone update in it?

Sep 22, 09 - 09:10 pm Comment from: Kaddywampus

I luv me some M&Ms;

Sep 23, 09 - 02:28 am Comment from: rickw

does anyone know if you have to have os3.1 in order for mms to work? i cannot update to 3.1 because of the issue with the exchange server. in short, if i upgrade it will render exchange useless and i need it for work. at least that is the main complaint i am hearing from the IT department.

thanks in advance.

MMS has two and only two practical purposes in the real world: Sending naked pictures of yourself to someone you want to have sex with, and receiving naked pictures from someone who wants to have sex with you. And that's ALL it is ever used for.

@Mike

1st Gen iPhone users have the option to upgrade to iphone 3G s... if their contract is up... I'd recommend doing so...
