AT&T states the obvious: SlingPlayer for iPhone would ‘create congestion’ for 3G network
Tuesday, May 12, 2009 - 10:02 PM EST

"AT&T told Wired.com that a 3G-capable SlingPlayer for iPhone would violate AT&T’s terms of service," Brian X. Chen reports for Wired. "An AT&T spokesman explained that a 3G-capable SlingPlayer could potentially strain AT&T’s 3g network."

"Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network," an AT&T spokesman said. "The application does not run on our 3G wireless network. Applications like this, which redirects a TV signal to a personal computer, are specifically prohibited under our terms of service. We consider smartphones like the iPhone to be personal computers in that they have the same hardware and software attributes as PCs."

"That said, we don’t restrict users from going to a web site that lets them view videos," the spokesman added. "But what our terms and conditions prohibit is the transferring, or slinging, of a TV signal to their personal computer or smartphone."

Chen reports, "The SlingPlayer mobile app will enable iPhone users to stream video from a Slingbox device hooked up to a TV. Apple’s requirement to make the app Wi-Fi only raises a brow, as other AT&T handsets, such as the BlackBerry Bold, support a 3G-capable SlingPlayer app."

More in the full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: No brows raised here, as iPhone users are several times more likely to be using AT&T's network for slinging around video than Blackberry luddites. AT&T could allow BlackBerrys to stream 1080p HD video 24/7/365 since they know that the CrackBerry thumb-typers are all way, way too busy sending constant — but, thankfully, low-network-impact — streams of inane text emails to each other throughout every waking moment of their afflictive, insipid lives.

SHOVE IT AT+T!!!

Next time build a faster network to begin with.

Make it so as to outstrip any possible future demand for quite some time.

Don't continue to build half assed upgrades as you go, which quickly get obsolete a few months down the road and cost us consumers a fortune every month.

And another thing, your 'phone book delivery contractors' are breaking Federal Law by hanging/placing your phone books on US Postal mailboxes.

You know why? Because they don't pay the workers enough to do it any other way, including the way you want, which is front door delivery.

But you know this because you don't pay your contractors enough either.

SO SHOVE IT!!

May Apple dump your *ss pronto.

I love my iPhone, but AT&T;blows! Build more towers and upgrade!

May 12, 09 - 09:37 pm Comment from: alansky

Since mobile service providers have been showcasing streaming video on mobile handsets for quite some time, we must assume that relatively few smartphone owners used this (or any other) advanced feature until the appearance of the iPhone, which has changed the game completely. One might be tempted to say that the iPhone caught the cellular providers with their pants down. They better pull 'em up fast before someone snaps some really embarrassing photos of them tripping all over themselves.

well.. sorry ATT, but you need to get with the program... data usage is going no where but UP.... if your network can't handle it, you better spend some $$ and upgrade.

Woah MDN, calm down about fifty notches. The Blackberry was surely one of the best, if not *the* best, smartphone maker in the world before the iPhone, so you're being absurd to ridicule its users, especially (1) those who, say, still have Blackberries they bought before the iPhone's release; (2) those who cannot use AT&T;in their area; (3) those who did not want or need the internet use and expensive data plans associated with any smartphone, and so originally purchased a cheap phone with, say, 2-year contract with Verizon, and then later found they needed a smartphone, and wisely chose Blackberry over Palm or Windows Mobile; (4) those whose employers required Blackberries; and a hundred other possible ways in which someone can become a Blackberry user without intentionally preferring it over the iPhone. For the Blackberry-using population as a whole, I highly doubt that anyone in his right mind honestly thinks emails sent from Blackberries are any more "inane" than those sent from any phone. Sheesh.

If Apple didn't have complete control over third party apps via the App Store, ATT wouldn't be able to do this. The folks at Cupertino are the enablers here. Why upgrade your network when Officer Steve is there to block any data intensive applications?

There's nobody to blame but Apple. They signed the contract that put us on this blasted network, and they're probably ready to sign an exclusivity extension (if they haven't already).

Steve sold us out once again.

May 12, 09 - 10:37 pm Comment from: Tony

I wonder if the problem they have is actually the transmission of a TV signal to the phone, rather than the actual data it uses. As has already been pointed out, data-intensive video apps are already out there and working on 3G. Perhaps AT&T;doesn't want to piss off content providers?

It's unfortunate if the AT&T;network cannot handle the number of iPhone users who might avail themselves of the Sling Player but their handling of the situation leaves a lot to be desired. Users of other 3G devices on their network can use Sling Player software on their 3G devices and inexplicably that is not a violation of their terms of service while using Sling Player software on the iPhone in the same manner is. I gladly gave up a BlackBerry for a shiny new iPhone some time ago but find it quite annoying I could use my Sling Box with that old device over my mobile network (Rogers) but will not be able to with the iPhone version because AT&T;cannot handle it.

By allowing AT&T;to impose this restriction on the Sling Player for iPhone Apple has effectively blocked this from being available to customers in other countries. There is no indication that Rogers Wireless in Canada would block use of the 3G network for this. In fact they have all kinds of applications on other devices that use lots of data and they allow tether of all their 3G devices without any additional fees. Of course we cannot do this with our iPhones either because AT&T;asked Apple to block this capability.

At times it feels like Apple has forgotten that the iPhone is a global product. Decisions taken to assist AT&T;are being allowed to impact the customer experience around the world and that simply does not make sense. The shortcomings of the AT&T;network should not be allowed to impact the usefulness of applications to customers around the world but it appears that this is exactly what is happening here.

at&t;is PATHETIC... This alone will have me jump to Verizon if they get the iPhone, and I will gladly pay the cancellation fee... Screw Off at&t;... I truly hope they read the boards... The more they restrict things the more people get aggravated and at&t;eventually loses MONEY in the long run... They just don't get it... Just like the record companies didn't get it... So g-d damn annoying....

May 13, 09 - 12:32 am Comment from: Scott

As of 1am east coast time, the app is available for purchase!
It works great! On wi-fi, of course.

"of their afflictive, insipid lives"

Jeez MDN, what the hell crawled up your shorts today?!?!? Just a LOT bit harsh for no reason.

As for the AT&T;bashers: Any other network provider is going to do the same thing. The only video services available thus far have been those which you have to BUY from the mobile service provider. And none have succeeded.

Take Sprint's watch NFL games on your mobile phone. Who the heck can see anything, and who would want to watch microscopic NFL players moving around on a crappy RAZR screen? The reason they can still be offered is that no one uses the services.

AT&T;didn't say you can't have video, it said you can't stream TV signals over their network. This isn't Apple dictating the terms; it's AT&T;.

Don't know for sure, but it may also be FCC related. I wonder if AT&T;needs special licensing to be able to allow TV signals to be streamed over its network.

No they just need to build more bandwidth.

For instance the "3G laptop connect card" from AT+T costs either $100 or $60 a month (with phone) and is limited to only a mere 5GB of downloads a month!!

AT+T has blocked so much innovative stuff because they haven't built enough highway for the demand.

Take for instance 4G, we were just on Edge (2.5G) a year ago and then 3G was the hottest thing 6 months ago!

I don't know about you, but I don't want to buy a new iPhone every 6 fscking months just to get faster speed. That's totally impractical.

It's because AT+T is nickel and dime'n the bandwidth upgrades and perhaps Apple is along for the ride, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

People are not made of money that you just soak them over and over.

I got a AT+T network using phone for voice, pay as I go. It's only $10-$20 a month.

I use my MacBook Pro and a $30 a month wireless internet.

I'm paying a combined $50 a month and certainly not limited to a mere 5GB a month.

So I expected to pay more with 3G/4G and be capped on my bandwidth?

Last time I checked it costs more to maintain land lines than cell towers.

So what's the deal?

AT+T incompetence.

Crazy Cannuck "There is no indication that Rogers Wireless in Canada would block use of the 3G network for this."

People live in Canada?

They have internet up there?

Wait, do they have computers up there too? How did you post this?

May 13, 09 - 08:10 am Comment from: @potwittical

well it looks like AT&T;has to admit that the iPhone is the only one smartphone who's features people actually use

May 13, 09 - 08:57 am Comment from: Alx

"AT+T incompetence."

How about Apple??? They are the ones who struck a stupid exclusive deal with AT&T;.. AT&T;is their partner. Jobs bragged about it.....

It is impossible to blame one without the other... Apple is JUST AS GUILTY in all of this,.,,

May 13, 09 - 09:14 am Comment from: Clynx

This is a lie, more and more real data studies showing there is no proven evidence it will cause network problem. Maybe in heavy congested areas from time to time. But in know way is the WHOLE network slowed. This is a back door way to censor you to use their stupid services.

May 13, 09 - 11:09 am Comment from: PoorAmericans

Wow! .. The US must have the WORST mobile phone service in the world.

May 13, 09 - 12:24 pm Comment from: Not American

@twilightmoon: People outside of the US are globally aware, so I keep forgetting that Americans typically believe that they are the only people on the planet. Ah well, it's not so bad at least the majority of you (60%) can find one country on the map. No small wonder your arrogance and raging narcissism keep the rest of the world viewing you with antipathetic regard.

"Why does everyone hate us when we love ourselves so much?!"

May 13, 09 - 02:51 pm Comment from: jubbles

Streaming of TV content would compete directly with their U-Verse service, and they probably don't want to host that over their own network

May 13, 09 - 03:27 pm Comment from: twilightmoon

Not American "No small wonder your arrogance and raging narcissism keep the rest of the world viewing you with antipathetic regard."

Thanks for the hilarious post. If you are as dumb and as lacking in any sense of humor as you seem, then I'm glad I do not live near you.

Try enjoying life more, taking yourself less seriously, find a hobby, and try to laugh at life a bit more. You might live longer. Also not everything that everyone says should be taken at face value.

Never mind, you're obviously too stupid to benefit from any advice, just go on living your life as a myopic humorless zombie.

I love how you insult me for being arrogant while simultaneously broadly painting all Americans as being ignorant and arrogant. That's classic!

Stay under your rock on the far side of the planet please!

May 13, 09 - 09:03 pm Comment from: Me

Americans are stupid to allow this nonsense and yes I am an american (in lower case because of my fellow idiot americans)
