look hhow it's written - they could have said : It does not have GPS -

I think the Iphone can have gps as a plug in (think Nike +) or as bluetooth car kit

iPhone users will not be able to conduct IM conversations with instant messaging users

Uhh, if I can iChat from my Mac to any cell phone today, why would the iPhone be any different?

Jun 09, 07 - 09:58 am Comment from: Stefano Jobso

"iPhone users will not be able to conduct IM conversations with instant messaging users"

Google's GMail does chat with a web interface. Unfortunately, it's IE/Firefox only. (JavaScript issues perhaps?)

In principle if Apple can't put iChat on there, or AT & T won't agree to that, you could still do it by means of a web app, like GMail ... providing the web app worked with Safari.

Jun 09, 07 - 10:11 am Comment from: brian

Calling Shannigans SHANNIGANS... Your tell me that ATT let these people keep that manual B.S No way they had a meeting and the manager took them back after. This is some really good B.S. No one can get there hands on any Iphone stuff, but this person does. Oh yeah and you can send messages with pictures. It's actually on the Apple Website, an Jobs did that during his last WWDC presentation. Still calling this is a real good fake. Oh yeah what about a Voice Recorder. I use mine alot on my palm. Good Feature but does the iphone have that??

Jun 09, 07 - 10:12 am Comment from: John

Really? No IM?? I'd think iChat on the iPhone would be a killer app for it. That's truly disappointing if true

Jun 09, 07 - 10:38 am Comment from: Basty

@realnbk

Nike+ does not use GPS. It uses information about your steps to determine how far you run. This is why it works on a treadmill.

Jun 09, 07 - 11:07 am Comment from: hellobeebo

They said the chat was SMS and there was no ichat from day one.

Jun 09, 07 - 11:24 am Comment from: whatever

What is the big deal with GPS. I never lost enough to need GPS, it is merely a cool looking feature when it works. A map is nice and as long as I have an elegant map then I am fine. If I need GPS to go on a date, then I dont need to be on that date. GPS is a battery draining, peformance draining feature best left to the stand alone GPS devices offered in many car stereos or Tom Toms and Garmins.

Jun 09, 07 - 11:52 am Comment from: twilightmoon@mac.com

hellobeebo: "They said the chat was SMS and there was no ichat from day one."

Umm... no they didn't, they never confirmed or denied if there would be an IM client. This is the first time we've had a complete list of shipping apps.

Jun 09, 07 - 12:05 pm Comment from: Jeff

Does the iPhone support voice recognition? I'd hate to think the only way I could make a phone call in my car was to use the user interface of the iPhone. When I'm driving, I'd rather just speak the name of the person I want to call.

Jun 09, 07 - 12:06 pm Comment from: Jeff

I guess its pretty reasonable to think there won't be VOIP? Must make voice calls only through AT&T;'s network.

Jun 09, 07 - 12:32 pm Comment from: iMaki

I stand corrected on the VIBRATE option, but alas other deficiencies surface. Not good.

Jun 09, 07 - 12:41 pm Comment from: jbella

File this under wishful thinking, but remember that hte iPhone is really a small computer. If the iPhone does not have iChat from day 1, there is no reason that it cant be added later. Same with the GPS... (well.. not GPS per se) but ATT already can do tower based location finding, it just needs to be able to pass that information back to the phone. I'm certain this is something that Apple is looking into adding in the future. Thats the beauty of software.

Jun 09, 07 - 12:56 pm Comment from: DogGone

Apple have said that both the iPhone and AppleTV are going to be updated via software as time goes on. That means functions like IM will turn up later.

As for GPS, basic location finding can be done with the cell towers. This may not be able give you turn by turn direction finding but will certainly be able to tell you where you are. Again good software may improve performance.

For the first time, the first adopters may not lose out with next generation products sine Apple will be enhancing the units as time goes on.

No DogGone, it means that in theory 'could" turn up later only a word difference but a hell of a word anyway

I don't care about GPS. I have GPS in both vehicles--Mine and my wife's.

iChat would be nice, but not having it is not a deal killer for me. Although, it is possible to iChat with cell phone users--You just don't enter the screen name for initiation--you enter '+', and the phone number including area code. I'm not sure about initiating the chat from the iPhone though...

Again though, as others have stated, software updates will add new goodies as time progresses.

I'm sold already on the iPhone based on the features that have been demoed. I'm not counting on some mystery app that may or may not be included, depending on which rumor is accurate.

My current contract expired last month, and my service now is lousy. I'm ripe for iPhone. smile

Jun 09, 07 - 01:59 pm Comment from: Kevin

If there were to be more Apps for the iPhone, they'd definetly be on the home screen, and I think that's the reason they only put 11 icons on it in the first place.

I don't know what all the complainign about iChat is about though. I know for a fact that AIM & MSN both allow you to send text messages directly to cell phones. All that matters is that the SMS interface looks like iChat, even if it is using SMS, you'll effectively be testing between an IM screen name and a phone. I will grant that for this to work, an AIM user or MSN user has to text you first. It works perfectly for me on both AIM and MSN.

Try it now if you don't believe me... type your cell phone number into AIM as a simple SN, and see if it works. Use this format: +1***####### [where the *** is your area code ant the # symbol represents the 7 digits of your US Cell Phone number.

Example: +15559876543 if the phone number is (555) 987-6543

WARNING: Standard text fees will apply, just as if you recieved a message from someone elses phone.

I beat you to it Kevin. :p

Jun 09, 07 - 02:35 pm Comment from: mark

How do the following things "whet" my appetite?

1) GPS is not part of the iPhone feature set.
2) Media Net, MobiTV, or Cellular Video are not available on iPhone.

I was hoping for live video camera capabilites so I can see others live as they are conversing with me.

Jun 09, 07 - 02:41 pm Comment from: Hoosier Mac Daddy

There's a training manual (?!) that includes how to overcome objections (wtf?!!??) ...as if AT&T;is going to have a hard time selling this thing, or that 99% of the initial customers haven't watched Jobs keynote like 5 times already!

Jun 09, 07 - 02:47 pm Comment from: Kevin

confuzed1,

lol - yes you did :-D

sorry, i didn't see it when i commented b/c i hadn't refreshed the page - oh well.

I agree with you, and don't think not having the actual iChat from OS X is a big deal.

Jun 09, 07 - 03:04 pm Comment from: realnbk

Basty:
I did not say Nike + had GPS;
i was giving an example of how you enhance the ipod feature.
Similarly with a tiny module at the bottom you could ad a GPS plug-in to work withnthe map application on the Iphone

Jun 09, 07 - 03:13 pm Comment from: IM will come to iPhone

AT&T;won't like it, but it's just a matter of time. When it does, it will kill a huge income stream for the carriers, which is why it isn't included in the first round of iPhones.

Jun 09, 07 - 04:14 pm Comment from: eMax

They could have just said: "READ apple.com for iphone info"

We need Gmail app, as well as IM support, im fine with GPS support as an accessory.

How about the AT&T;Plan costs and features??? I dont want to camp out just to find out its gonna cost me 120 a month for data

Jun 09, 07 - 04:53 pm Comment from: mike

Uh, considering Steve showed us iChat IM's during the last keynote, yea that would be annoying.

We already know about free software upgrades for the first two years thou...

WTF wants one of these?!!!!!!!!

God Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!

The phone is not equipped with I-Vibrator?

I guess my Mom will be keeping her Blackberry.

Life sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

Jun 09, 07 - 06:41 pm Comment from: anon

Mike-

Steve never demoed iChat IM's. He demoed SMS. SMS conversation are threaded (like Palm does it, which is definitely a good thing). The threaded conversations look just like iChat.

Jun 09, 07 - 07:01 pm Comment from: Martin

IM to phone only works in the USA.

and, even in the USA it's not free.

so it's important.

but, iChat is also VOIP, and video, so it's really a big deal.

it's really too bad that the real price of this phone is $999, and that Apple had to make the deal with AT&T;

Jun 09, 07 - 07:31 pm Comment from: gmaff

DogGone:Again good software may improve performance. For the first time, the first adopters may not lose out with next generation products sine Apple will be enhancing the units as time goes on.

Software can't fix everything. Apple will obviously be releasing iPhones with bigger harddrives and everyone who was so excited about the advantages of software will have filled their 8 gigs and are going to be wishing they waited. Just my thoughts.

Jun 09, 07 - 11:12 pm Comment from: Rudge

No iChat? Big surprise! AT&T;is going to charge you for each SMS Instant Message, then why would they allow iChat? It's never going to happen. Now there might be some kind of hack come out some day (and now you know why Steve didn't want independent iPhone development). That's why you won't see Skype on the iPhone too.

Jun 10, 07 - 05:38 am Comment from: No3GForYou

"What is the big deal with GPS. I never lost enough to need GPS"

Perhaps in the small Midwestern town you live in you can always find your position easily. I guess you never intend to travel at all, so you're probably right. you don't need it.

"Media Net, MobiTV, or Cellular Video are not available on iPhone."

With no 3G capability lack of the modern streaming media features should have been fully anticipated by everybody.

Jun 10, 07 - 04:08 pm Comment from: @ brian

"alot" is not a word brian.

Jun 10, 07 - 04:18 pm Comment from: lack of features is a GOOD thing

But who cares what the iPhone does not have. It is what it DOES have that is going to make it sell. It will be hot.

I won't buy one because I have no use for a cell phone but most people do, or at least they think they do, and most people (particularly young folks) simply must have the coolest fad going. It will sell and it will sell in a big way.

I don't want one but it (AAPL) is still making me fairly well to do as it is. Hey, we need something to be able to add to future updated versions in order to keep folks buying a new iPhone every year or so, and keep AAPL climbing.

Jun 10, 07 - 07:37 pm Comment from: iScott

I can only imagine that this 'manual' is more a sales tool for AT&T;Employees that will help them pre-sale the iPhone with more specifics on what most of us already know.

The end of the book reads:

"Keep in mind that there might be additional iPhone features that are announced at iPhone's launch as well as additional information about the features in this guide."

Jun 11, 07 - 09:34 am Comment from: Mac_ATTY

FROM BUSINESSWEEK ARTICLE: AT&T;'S NEW OPERATETOR: CEO Randall Stephenson talks about the challenges of getting the iPhone to market:

A ton of attention is focused on the iPhone launch. But most AT&T;sales-people haven't had a chance to really learn the phone. What will you do to make sure they know what they're talking about?
[Laughs] There have only been five people in AT&T;and maybe only five at Apple who have handled that phone in any extensive way. Look, getting a product ready in stores is something that we do [all the time]. There is nothing new here. It's been a meticulously planned launch for the past two years. We're prepared for people camping out in front of our stores.

What contribution will iPhone make to your growth?
I expect it to be significant. Steve Jobs has said he expects to sell 10 million through 2008. I hope he's right. I hope he's low! The iPhone will drive people to stores for the sale of all our other devices. Our objective is to own all aspects of [communications] in the home. The iPhone is critical to this.

Jun 11, 07 - 10:40 am Comment from: Rudge

This will be fantastic, but I have yet to read anything about voice dialing, which I think is an important part of modern mobile phones. Perhaps this is one of those features that will come along later. I hope so.
