Good start, but consider...

This single MDN page, with only 3 comments as I write this, clocked in at 491 KB, with additional overhead of 95 HTTP requests according to YSlow in Firefox.

Thankfully cached items brings it down to just 95 KB, but worst case scenario a little over 100 views of MDN pages alone will take you over the 50 MB limit...

This plan requires a 1 year contract--you can't just buy it for a single month or period of time you might be overseas. You must also have a US plan in place, so no Canadian purchases for use there. In short, it truly sucks.

If they won't voluntarily unlock iPhones for overseas travel I think owners are justified in jailbreaking them and buying local SIM cards for overseas use.

Mossman. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a page with more ads than MDN, though. So if you have an iPhone overseas, avoid MDN.

I'm holding out for the Continental rates, and the Christopher Walken tribute iPhone....

To call daughter in Saigon we arrange a time for a call via e-mail, and then use Skype computer to computer.
To call in NA (ex. Mexico) we use Skype's $29.95 a year option,
Computer to telephone.
In Canada, we have to save money somehow 'cause we're taxed to death, Alberta excluded.

I agree that Skype is the best way to go for the lowest possible price. You can even do conference calls now with great voice quality (in my experience, that wasn't always the case).

Why don't you buy a used mac for a couple hundred and use iChat for free? Do both of you don't have a internet connetion?

We borrow our neighbors Hi-speed and talk to family all over the world for free. OK, it's not 100% free, I had to get a laptop. Duh!

In my experience, Jajah has offered the best quality with pricing equivalent to Skype. Can also use Jajah on the iPhone to that I can get Skyp rates while out-and-about. The trick is connect the call and then immediately back out to the main page before the Jajah return call comes in - if you are too slow, then the call goes to voice-mail (cannot do Edge and voice at the same time).

Pity we cannot do proper voip on the iPhone; am waiting for ~ 1 month after the iPhone SDK!

about mdn adds. i have a css file attached to safari to block all these ads. also, disable java pluginscookies and images. wow pages load hella faster. wish we could disable images with iphone when using edge!

Why don't I use iChatAV to talk to my daughter in Saigon? She runs Tiger on a 12" PB l.5, has an iSight and great Internet speed but thinks Skype is "good enough". You can lead a horse to water, but...

With a 50MB limit you'd have to turn off javascript, flash and images in your browser to get some mileage. A 20MB limit means no surfing the web and you'd probably have to turn off html email and images in your mail client. If you're going overseas for a 3-week holiday and have to sign up for an annual roaming plan then you're screwed anyway.

Unless you're a very frequent traveler, the iPhone is practically for domestic use only.

Plan is actually worth $1.

OK, some what on topic.

I have, believe it or not, had people tell me that they won't get an iPhone because you have to pay for every text message sent even if it is only one letter. Uhhhhh.......that's the way ALL text messaging works today. But they didn't want to believe that's the way Verizon charges them now and it will be no different on the iPhone.

Like they say, you can take a horse to water.....

You shouldn't whine.

We've mandated this to Apple. They must protect the phone from 3rd party apps.

In turn we give them a hefty portion of the profits.

Sorry people, apple is a business and businesses like to make money. It increases the share price. And if we can get away with limiting the consumer choice to earn even more money, we will do it.

And apple will too.
