Australian 3G Apple iPhone to be world’s fastest; set for June 9 unveiling
Friday, May 23, 2008 - 10:17 AM EST

"Australia will have the fastest Apple 3G iPhone in the world, a senior executive of Telstra has told ChannelNews. 'We know what is coming we have seen the new device and it will be available on our network as soon as it is launched in the USA. By Xmas this phone will be capable of 42mbs which will make it faster than a lot of broadband offerings and the fastest iPhone on any network in the world,' they said," David Richards reports or ChannelNews.

"The 3G version of Apple's iPhone will become available very soon after its June 9 unveiling by CEO/chairman Steve Jobs at the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco say Apple insiders. ChannelNews has also been told that Telstra already have 3G phones for testing," Richards reports.

Someone in Australia is about to lose their job for squalking.

darn that non-disclosure agreement!!! doh! doh!!

May 23, 08 - 09:28 am Comment from: coolfactor

Not anymore. Count Australia out after this exec spilled the beans.

May 23, 08 - 09:32 am Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

And now we wait

3G is indeed FAST, I have a notebook on it now.

Hopefully iPhone 2.0 will address the needs of many, so we won't have to wait for iPhone 3.0.

I assume Apple also learned a valuable lesson, not to assume they got it right the first time, to manufacture 10 million at the first pop and then have to discount them AND wait several years, before releasing the next version.

The cell phone market moves much faster. Apple has to release new iPhone versions at least every six months mandatory.

May 23, 08 - 09:33 am Comment from: steve516

I think it is all part of a finely orchestrated plan by the good folks in Cupertino to ramp up excitement over the next few weeks.

And it could also signal better speed for the US as well...

May 23, 08 - 09:35 am Comment from: FactChecker

Mad Mac Maniac,

"Several years?" Get real. Try "one year," you fool.

May 23, 08 - 09:35 am Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

And another thing

Apple needs to make the iPhone 2.0 in different sizes. Small medium and large.

Small: For those who don't need a whole lot and want slim size

Medium: Present iPhone size

Large: Larger screen, more storage and memory. Computer like in almost every detail. Sure it might look like a small box being held up to one's ear to make a call, but most will be using iChat instead.

Plus BIGGER is better. Just ask any SUV driver.

May 23, 08 - 09:38 am Comment from: Ampar

Jobs: "What time is it in Melbourne? I need to make a call. It's what? 12:36 AM? That's o.k. I'll wake him up."

May 23, 08 - 09:40 am Comment from: FactChecker

Mad Mac Maniac,

You're obviously a friggin' genius.

Apple should fire Jobs immediately and replace him with you.

May 23, 08 - 09:41 am Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

While I'm complaining.

Why the hell doesn't Apple offer a low grade version of TV shows?

It's not like high speed is everywhere and I'm tired of wardriving to find a open high speed connection.

LISTEN APPLE!! Glossy screens s*ck &ss;too.

Thank you for hearing my whine. I got some cheeze whiz too. LOL

I'm mad...thus my name.

May 23, 08 - 09:42 am Comment from: Spark

@Mad Mac Maniac
A new iPhone version every six months? That would be ridiculously counterproductive.

May 23, 08 - 09:42 am Comment from: ProtoDAda

i don't know why you can't use 2-3 phones using 1 number. that way, i can grab a small phone when i go out at night, use the regular sized iphone during the day. that would be much easier than switching sim card every time.

May 23, 08 - 09:43 am Comment from: Ampar

" . . . AND wait several years, before releasing the next version."

What kind of crappy calendar are you using?

Or does several mean one in your language?

The iPhone was released for sale on June 29th, 2007.

May 23, 08 - 09:44 am Comment from: Idiots posting here - is there nothing we can do?

@mad mac maniac

Your post isnt credible.
Several years? WTF are you talking about? The iPhone has NOT been discounted, has been out LESS than a year, has sold like hotcakes.
Sorry - what planet did you come from?

Er..actually, they DID get it right first time, They almost always do.

'needs of many'? Thats like, you and your girlfriend?

'The cell market moves faster' NO, it moves at a glacial pace, they just stick a new cheap camera in, change the shape, and still all the phones are CRAP.
Apple have finally shown the world what a cell phone can be - and the rest cant do it.

Stupid post - go away.

May 23, 08 - 09:47 am Comment from: karl MArx

Apple should make three iphone sizes?

Yeah, one to sell, one for you and one for your girlfriend.

Please STFU.

May 23, 08 - 09:49 am Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

You all mean to tell me the iPhone has only been out a measly year?

Jesus, your right. It feels like it's been several years. Probably because I want one, but it's not filling any needs I have in it's present configuration.

So yes they need to come out with better versions every six months to keep the hype alive. A year has been too long to wait.

And no the iPhone 1.0 is not right.

My throat crushing huge fingers can't hit the tiny fairy ass keys.

Stupid. Give me tactile feel of a real keyboard. Then I can adjust pressure to make sure my entry is correct.

not the hit and correct then try hitting again method of the iPhone keyboard.

stuff like that. you know, what makes the crackberry so popular.

May 23, 08 - 09:50 am Comment from: Predrag

I have to respond to this; Mad Mac Maniac, your comment sounds like it had come from another planet, and that is probably because your personal preference for what iPhone should be has not been met with the first version.

If there is any lesson Apple could have learned from the first iPhone, it would be not to change ANYTHING. IPhone, in its first version was an unprecedented success. Never in the history of gadgetry has any device ever sold so fast in such huge numbers. Not PSP, not StarTAC when it appeared years ago, not RAZR, nothing. And this was a device that initially cost $500! It broke all records. Its customer satisfaction numbers are significantly higher than any other mobile phone out there. in all markets where it was sold, it sold quickly. The only time sales begun to show early signs of slowing was when rumours started about the imminent 3G iPhone, and even this was mostly in EU markets (UK, FR, GE), where they might have preferred it to be 3G in the first place (not that it wasn't selling briskly before that).

Every once in a while, someone comes on these boards and states flat-out that iPhone was a failure, or partly a failure, because it lacked this, that or the other (usually 3G, GPS and physical keyboard, in addition to non-exclusive carriers), and that Apple should learn from this. Obviously, they would personally like that some of those perceived shortcomings were addressed. However, this doesn't automatically negate the numbers. We've seen them on MDN many, many times.

If iPhone 3G keeps exactly the same specs as iPhone 2.5G (with the only addition being 3G), it will sell extremely fast. Mour Mad Mac Maniac here will probably not buy it, as it will be missing something that he wants. I am sure, though that 30 - 40 million other people will buy it in the next 6 - 12 months.

And to chime in on the subject, I don't think anyone will lose their job (or break a contract with Apple) for 'spilling the beans' on iPhone distribution. So many have already announced this out there, and with Apple not even selling the existing model anymore, there is no more doubt that it is coming very soon.

May 23, 08 - 09:51 am Comment from: Macaday

MDN, can't you engineer it for us to be able to slap an "IGNORE THIS" sticker on the more inane posts here?

Mad Mac Maniac's is one good example.

May 23, 08 - 10:02 am Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

Hey, I'm a consumer. I have spent a small fortune on Apple toys and when something doesn't meet my needs I say something.

Hopefully Apple will get the message and do things BETTER NEXT TIME.

It's you brainwashed "Apple can't do no wrong" that got the problem. Apple is just a company catering to OUR needs, but you all seem to think you need to be buying their poorly designed products to meet THEIR needs.

Doesn't work like that. Apple as a result HASN'T been listening to the needs of the consumers. It automatically assumes it knows what is right FOR US.

For instance, can't self change the battery in your new Apple devices resulting in premature hardware replacement?

That's what I'm talking about. Things like that.

"Plus BIGGER is better."

I know. That's what your girlfriend said when I asked her why she liked sleeping with me more than you. She also made some reference to microsoft when talking about you, but I don't think she meant the company.

May 23, 08 - 10:08 am Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

With the new Intel chip Mac's, you can't trust your computer anymore because a installed software may install something into EFI. A powerful firmware level with complete access to your hard drive and the internet with out the OS even knowing about it.

And what about glossy screens? Over 80% prefer matte screens over glossy.

(anti-glare screens were not invented for nothing you know)

Apple hasn't been listening lately and sure their stocks are up on speculation, but if their products fail to deliver on people's needs, why spend money on them?

I've nearly given up on a lot of Apple lately, it's like they went off on a dirt road into the desert somewhere.

Area 51.

May 23, 08 - 10:09 am Comment from: Jim

Jesus mad Mac Maniac, as I was replying to you twaddle about the design of the iPhone, you post more diatribe.

How does a non-use replaceable battery result in premature hardware replacement? Do you not know you can get the battery in any iPhone, iPod or MacBook Air replaced at any Apple Store or Third Party Apple Provider?

Get the facts before shooting your mouth off boy, and you might walk away from this with some of your credibility intact.

Also, Apple do a fine job of showing the consumer what they need. As Henry Ford famously said about producing cars for the first time “If I’d asked my customers what they wanted, they’d have said a faster horse."

Consumers need guidance. if the products are good, the consumers will buy. iPhone has been a phenomenal success. Case closed.

May 23, 08 - 10:15 am Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

Do you not know you can get the battery in any iPhone, iPod or MacBook Air replaced at any Apple Store or Third Party Apple Provider?

Boy how I love it when they fall into the trap.

Yes I KNOW the battery can be replaced, but unless the masses come across this information, THEY DON"T KNOW AND ASSUME THEY NEED A NEW DEVICE!!

With a battery slot, EVERY USER AUTOMATICALLY KNOWS THEY CAN REPLACE THE BATTER THEMSELVES. And instead of waiting forever while their machine gets sent off, losing valuable time and not to mention privacy issues, the common user can replace the battery themselves at the local electonic supply store.

CHECKMATE!! FOOLS.

"Over 80% prefer matte screens over glossy."

Where's the link to a reliable source?

(Self surveys don't count.)

May 23, 08 - 10:19 am Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

The problem with Apple is they are making their product so VERTICAL, that you can't do anything unless you go through THEM.

This allows them to control your hardware turnover and prices.

I don't know who is worse, Microsoft or Apple.

At least with M$ one has a choice of hardware vendors.

With Apple you have little hardware choice.

God I love them, but it's getting really bad lately.

Never assume, it makes an ASS out of U and ME.

Dude, put the crack pipe down. If you don't ask questions, you never find answers. If consumers would rather blindly walk in and buy a new device instead of asking a simple question (can the battery be replaced?) then that's their problem.

I bet you're the guy who took McDonalds to court because the coffee was too hot, and now every coffee shop has to put WARNING: HOT COFFEE on every cup of hot coffee so idiots like you don't scald themselves.

Can we ignore Mad Mac Maniac and move on? (his reference to glossy screen complaints was the tip-off to me).

I've got a REAL problem - take a look at where my house is located:

http://www.thedatadude.com/eg_att_coverage_map.jpg

See the red "X" in the middle of all that white space? - that's where I live. I'd LOVE to get an iPhone but wouldn't be able to use it in my home or neighborhood. My wife has one, but only uses it for phone calls when she is "out and about".

Anybody have any suggestions? Should I call AT&T;and ask them to "fill in the white space"? wink

May 23, 08 - 10:26 am Comment from: 7over

As excellent as the first version of the iPhone is, it's not 'everything' that Apple wanted it to be...else there would be no need for another version. Since Apple is coming out with a new improved iPhone, the first one must have needed some tweaking.

As outstanding as iPhone 2 will no doubt be, there will also be areas that Apple will want to improve upon and they will no doubt come out with an iPhone 3... and so on. Not a big deal is it?

I did not purchase iPhone V1 because I knew that Apple would likely learn some things from their first move into the cell phone market (not counting the *wonderful ROKR...but they obviously learned from that too!) and would make some improvements to V2. Even though all we have to go on is RUMOR at this point, I will be in line at my Apple store to purchase the new improved iPhone the day it launches.

Apple CAN do 'wrong' the first time and they have done so in the past... but on those occasions, they usually fix the issues with v2 and stand behind v1 with excellent service.
(I cite the aluminum iMac and its "random shutdown" issue as one recent example)

While I don't agree that iPhone needs a 'real' keyboard, nor do they need to come out with new models every 6 months, there are improvements to be made. ... and I wait with eager anticipation for those improvements as embodied in iPhone 2!

"Thank you, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America!"

And luckily for us stock holders, Apple has obviously delivering spectacularly all over the place (although we are still waiting on AppleTV to deliver true potential). MacBook Air? Flying off the shelves (out of stock for the most part); iPhone? Already discussed to death. Macs? growing twice as fast as any competitor in the market.

Apple, please don't change anything. My AAPL stock has doubled just about a year. I want it to double again!

MaMac Maniawrites, "And what about glossy screens? Over 80% prefer matte screens over glossy." And over 80% prefer - or at least buy - Windows. What does that prove?

Actually, I'm starting to warm to a glossy, if done right. My 17" LCD/TV monitor went on me after only three years, so I was thrown back in the market. None of the mattes caught my attention. I went for an LG 22", but took it back due to color shifts when even slightly off access. It was also *very* reflective. I took it back, then ordered an HP W2007. Nice colors, color shifts and reflectivity not as bad. I think I'll keep it.

A former colleague, once dismissive of Macs until a catastrophic failure of his Windows PC, made the leap to a 24" iMac and loves it. I've yet to hear him say "If only it weren't glossy..."

I just finally got a jailbroke iPhone and all I can say id Phuuuuuuquqe! What an amazing machine. The guy I got it from here in Oz has been selling 1000 to 2000 a month! For $995! AUD which is pretty on parity with the USD now. It works seamlessly with my carrier (Optus - who has a recorded iPhone announcement when you call for support. They have techs in place already to support the iPhone. One helped me get the data plan ($50 unlimited) all set up with no problems. No hesitation.

And the phone!!1 The best reception I have ever had with any phone. I live close to an event horizon for mobile phone reception.

M3 (cubed) you need to actually hold one in your hands before you complain. That is all I will say to your litany of diatribes that IMHO made no cogent point except that you pulled a Hillary - you got heaps of attention but still lost in the end.

That is not a sexist comment BTW, it is a behavioural observation.

Cheers...

May 23, 08 - 11:25 am Comment from: zek

Why would Apple make a small phone? Mobile phones are crap, and apple don't make them. The only reason the iPhone has a mobile built into it is because that'e the only way Apple can get a lot of people to buy them, essentially it's just an iPod touch with a phone tacked on--the phone part is among the least important bits and only there to fill the gap until we have overcome the retardation caused by the cellular companies protection of their businesses. Cellphones are 1990s crap.
