AutoCAD for Mac now available

Starting today, Mac users have even more to reason to celebrate their platform when AutoCAD, one of the most widely used software packages for professional design and engineering, becomes available for purchase or 30-day trial download for Mac OS X-based systems.

AutoCAD offers an intuitive interface with a look and feel that will be familiar to Mac users. AutoCAD for Mac takes full advantage of Mac OS X, including graphical browsing of design files with Cover Flow and use of Multi-Touch gestures on Mac notebooks, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad for intuitive pan and zoom features. With support for native creation and editing files in the DWG file format, AutoCAD for Mac also offers easy collaboration with suppliers, customers, clients and partners regardless of platform.

Long-time users of AutoCAD on Windows-based systems will feel right at home with AutoCAD for Mac, using the same commands and tools with which they’re already familiar. The intuitive interface and context-sensitive help function makes the transition easier and, regardless of background, AutoCAD for Mac helps users to spend less time on the software and more time on their designs.

The English language version of AutoCAD for Mac is now available for purchase in North America and Europe from leading resellers, online retailers and Autodesk.com.

Building on the April launch of SketchBook Pro for the iPad, Autodesk announced on 7 October enhancements for the SketchBook Mobile and SketchBook Pro for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. And on September 30, Autodesk launched AutoCAD WS, a new free web application that uses cloud computing technology to enable AutoCAD software users to view, edit and share their AutoCAD designs and DWG files through web browsers and mobile devices. The AutoCAD WS mobile application for iOS is also now available as a free* app in the App Store for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

  1. Aside from many PC games which in large part was addressed by the release of Steam for Mac, AutoCAD was regarded as the last major software holdout that it was said, “will never be made for the Mac” because it didn’t have enough users to justify its “port.”

With this applications release marks a milestone in the growth of the Mac platform as a whole that few realize.

  3. The “Things are getting better” video, with the co-workers all crowded around the Mac running AutoCAD, definitely looks like it has had some Apple-creative dust added to it. Strategic product for Apple: Check. Impressive visuals, check. Funky music: Check. It looks like it was touched by Steve himself. Great job!!

  5. About bloody time. I wish they had a ‘Lite’ version though. A non-professional just can’t afford it. Back when I was doing this for a living, I wouldn’t have hesitated.

  7. I’m really glad they finally brought AutoCAD to the mac. I wonder if they’ll bring 3ds max to the mac now. There’s probably a bigger market for 3ds than autocad on the mac platform.

  9. The strange thing is that the picture above shows a file in Cover Flow on the Finder – not AutoCAD. Look at the Dock – AutoCAD isn’t even running, just the Finder and Safari.
