Ballmer grabs Apple iPhone from Microsoft employee and ‘stomps’ it into ground
Friday, September 11, 2009 - 08:47 AM EDT

At Microsoft's private company meeting at Seattle's Safeco Field yesterday a "poor Microsoft employee who tried to take a picture of Ballmer with an iPhone," Todd Bishop reports for The Seattle Post-Intelligencer

MacDailyNews Take: Doesn't sound "poor" to us. He /she sounds smarter than the average Softie; must work at MacBU.

Bishop reports, "When Ballmer was making his big entrance -- slapping hands, running around, and generally whooping things up, as is his tradition at these events. That was when he spotted someone at field level, allegedly a member of the Windows group, using an iPhone to take his picture."

"Ballmer grabbed the Apple device from the employee and made some funny remarks as everyone booed. Then he put it on the ground and pretended to stomp on it, before walking away," Bishop reports. "The scene was visible on the big screen, so even people in the upper deck could see what was happening."

Bishop reports, "Of course, Ballmer might do better in the future by making sure that the employee has good reason to pick a Windows-branded phone over competing devices -- but as one of the person's colleagues noted on Twitter, 'you just don't pick up the CEO of Chevy in a BMW.'"

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: That employee must be new or he'd know that the delusional Microsoft brass loves to pretend that they don't offer inferior products and that Apple, their inspiration, doesn't even exist.

This is Mr Ballmer's plan to crush the iPhone. One at a time.

Sep 11, 09 - 08:53 am Comment from: ibookboyuk

Awwww. It shouldn't matter, but it's almost a good point about the Chevy in a BMW thing.

Sep 11, 09 - 08:53 am Comment from: PR

That's a very telling photography of him...He's at once bemused an befuddled. He's intrigued and bewildered. Please, please let him stay in charge at Microsoft...It's really helping my stock in Apple.

Sep 11, 09 - 08:53 am Comment from: Bernd

Funny. Balmer had a bit of a point with that. If it was not company issued then he can't damage it. I think Jobs would have the same problem with a win mob phone at an apple event. the only reason he would not if it was a demo on how hard it is to do simple things on win phone.

Sep 11, 09 - 08:56 am Comment from: tank

@PR That photo isn't real. It's Photoshopped.

Sep 11, 09 - 08:59 am Comment from: Guy Jones

It's mind-boggling that a man whose behavior has been so thoroughly infantile on numerous occasions could become the head of a major corporation...

ROFLMAO
we have a winner!!

@Twitter

'you just don't pick up the CEO of Chevy in a BMW.

1. No because clearly Rick Wagoner's bailed out/fired A$$ is too broke to call a limo.

2. No but then again you won't be picking him up in a Pontiac again either.

3. Same as above replacing Pontiac with Saab, Saturn, Hummer.

4. Of course not. Any place he can drive, he can take a company plane for 10x the cost.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:01 am Comment from: MadMac

Since when did "Chevy" have a CEO? Shows the intelligence of MS employees.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:02 am Comment from: R

As I said years ago, this battle between M$ and Apple is personal. Ballmer cannot stand Jobs. It must eat him alive that they didn't kill Apple when they had the chance.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:05 am Comment from: Ichabod Mudd

Fat fsck should plan on a brain transplant....

Sep 11, 09 - 09:11 am Comment from: Rich Penn

It's rumored that Ballmer has recently been in hospital for transplant surgery. He had an a**hole transplant.... unfortunately for his the a**hole rejected him.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:12 am Comment from: jaundiced

Ballmer may be a dufus, but this still wasn't a very smart thing the employee did. Some times it turns out that terms like "not a team player" or "occasionally doesn't share the company's vision" appear in performance evaluations as a result of things like this.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:16 am Comment from: Follower

Maybe the employee was in charge of testing the Bing SDK for iPhone.

I once used FedEx to send a package to UPS headquarters. The next week our UPS guy said, "That's not funny."

Sep 11, 09 - 09:18 am Comment from: Dirty Pierre le Punk

I quite like Balmer. It'd be good to have him around at work, you know, like one of those friendly morons that everyone chides now and again.

"Hey Steve, nip down to the stores and get me some elbow grease"
"Yeah, okay"

or

"Hey Steve, can you go to the store for a long stand?"
" No problem"

and when he leaves the room, everyone laughs and shakes their heads.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:27 am Comment from: NCIceman

Who does Uncle Fester think his random fits are influencing? It sounds like a cult over there, with everyone expected to share the same delusions. If you want to find fault with the iPhone, fine, but at least be rational about it. Anyone who does not think the iPhone has been successful should not be running a business.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:40 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

A hearty thanks to 'Alasdair Scott' and ' Follower' for my first morning chuckles. LOL

Sep 11, 09 - 09:44 am Comment from: His Shadow

This fat sweaty ape of a shoe salesman is emblematic of a poisoned corporate culture. Microsoft, in case they forgot, makes software. It's their raison de être. But instead of firing up the MBU and doing their fscking JOBS, they foment a childish adversarial war of sorts. Microsoft could have gotten in on the ground floor. They could have made Microsoft synonymous with the explosive development of software on the iPhone and opened a new market of 50 million customers.

Instead, they have Ballmer. May he be in charge for as long as it takes.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:46 am Comment from: Ray

M$ employees should non-skid protective covers for the iPhones...if Ballmer were to slip and hurt his back while stomping on an iPhone, M$ have to pay for his back surgery and go broke paying for his weight loss so the back surgery can be effective...

just my $0.02

Sep 11, 09 - 09:49 am Comment from: Famous Grouse

Does anyone recall the article where the MS employee talks about why they put Seadragon on the iPhone - because it was the only portable device with a GPU. Perhaps this was that guy.

Seadragon actually seems like a decent piece of software; it loads pictures and zooms faster than any of the Apple or Google apps for the iPhone...

Sep 11, 09 - 09:51 am Comment from: istepchild

We all aready knew Baller was ignorant, but with all the booing, we are now certain Micro$oft employees are ignorant too...if you're going to be a sheep, be a sheep with the best product. If you're going to climb the corporate ladder, make sure it's the right ladder first.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:52 am Comment from: istepchild

Ballmer, excuse me...forgot the 'ol "M"

Sep 11, 09 - 09:54 am Comment from: istepchild

M$'s way out of the toilet and new strategy should be to license the iPhone SDK for $99 and write iPhone apps. That's their best future.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:55 am Comment from: qka

Based on what we know of MS, I suspect the iPhone was planted by MS PR, just so Ballmer could grab it and "stomp" it.

And like all MS PR, this one has backfired.

Sep 11, 09 - 09:02 amComment from: R Ballmer cannot stand Jobs. It must eat him alive that they didn't kill Apple when they had the chance.

This is another thing: the Myth of Microsoft Invincibility. Microsoft cheerleaders everywhere are imagining a future where MS takes the mobile market by leveraging it's monopoly to squeeze out the competition. This is hopelessly delusional. Not only did RIM carve out it's empire right under Microsofts nose, and not only did Apple make MS irrelevant in the consumer space after less than 3 years making a phone, but those companies (Apple and RIM) did so in a market place that MS had in a hammerlock. MS had a desktop monopoly and a mobile platform when Apple was getting back on it's feet and RIM was still making pagers. A market for an integrated mobile softwar. platform and now it's almost entirely gone! What blinkered fan boy really believes MS has a chance of defeating not one, but two much more saavy and much more nimble competitors, when they couldn't hold onto a market in which they were the only major player?

Sep 11, 09 - 10:07 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@ Ray,

Can you imagine how awesome that would have been if Steve Ballmer actually did slip on the iPhone and throw out his back?

That instance would have resounded around the world, highlighting the imbecility of Ballmer for everyone to laugh about. Ohhhh, if only ... tongue laugh

Sep 11, 09 - 10:07 am Comment from: c.mac

I used to have a big client that was purchased by UPS. Not long after, without thinking, I sent some paperwork down to them via DHL, as I had done for years. It arrived the same day the UPS brass showed up to inspect the place. I almost lost my job that day. But lesson learned. Corporate critters are TOUCHY.

Sep 11, 09 - 10:25 am Comment from: Macaday

If that employee was actually shooting video - and it was running throughout that little cameo, it may make him a lot less poorer...

Fingers crossed!

Sep 11, 09 - 10:30 am Comment from: critic

"I think Jobs would have the same problem with a win mob phone at an apple event. the only reason he would not if it was a demo on how hard it is to do simple things on win phone."

Actually, SJ would not have that problem since there would never be a win mob phone at an Apple event in the first place.

However, even if there was, I think that SJ would either ignore it completely or point out the many ways that it is an inferior product. I don't think he would do a pretend monkey dance on it.

Now we know now that there is at least one person at Microsoft that has good taste.

Sep 11, 09 - 10:46 am Comment from: Harvey

Ballmer has the tact, finesse, gentility, even-temperedness and je-ne-sais-quoi to run for Congress in South Carolina.

Sep 11, 09 - 11:00 am Comment from: Knowing

I actually know someone senior at Microsoft who has his WinMo company issued phone and his personal iPhone.

Of course, this event was scripted for Balmer to do just this. It would be hard to see the individuals from the stage with the lights on him. If it was real, he could be charged with distruction of property.

Sep 11, 09 - 11:12 am Comment from: unclemacosx

@macaday that would be awesome if the iPhone landed backside up filming his stomp & possibly his slip & fall! 

Sep 11, 09 - 11:24 am Comment from: LateRegistrant

Some sources close to the scene say he really did try to stomp on it and kept missing.

Sep 11, 09 - 11:26 am Comment from: 84 Mac Guy

Maybe if the bonehead allowed more Apple products at MS Headquarters he'd realize that MS really needs to make better stuff.

On second thought, I think the reason he is so fat is so he can comfortably fit his head up his ass and avoid seeing reality.

Sep 11, 09 - 12:02 pm Comment from: therepguy

If I was that employee... I would be visiting a lawyer today and expecting a nice check in the mail in the very near future!

Also, all of Microsoft employees must be thinking what kind of nut do I work for and should I be looking for a different position with another company?

Worst yet, what do other potential employers think of my choose of employer?

Not good!

Sep 11, 09 - 12:22 pm Comment from: Tommyr

Ballmer is a total douchebag. The employee should have called him a dick head.

I would have.

Sep 11, 09 - 12:33 pm Comment from: macboer

Ballmers lowest point yet. i feel sad for him but even more so for everyone at Microsoftie. What kind of a CEO does this. I hope for MS sake that he doesn't have allot of say in the companies products. Poor windows fans. We SHOULD feel sorry for them.

that's all

Sep 11, 09 - 12:33 pm Comment from: Peter

I thought Microsoft was a software (and services) company.

Sep 11, 09 - 12:49 pm Comment from: Macintosh Sauce

He can pry my iPhone from my cold, dead hands.

Sep 11, 09 - 01:07 pm Comment from: jackspratt

yeah, Ballmer's a douchebag, but to be fair he was probably just clowning around.

Sep 11, 09 - 02:00 pm Comment from: Joe S.

This reminds me of an incident in the 70s when I was working at TI. Fred Bucy, later CEO, previously head if TI calculators saw an HP calculator on an engineer's desk and took a hammer to it. After that TI issued the top TI scientific calculator to all their engineers and we had to attend a half day training session.

Sep 11, 09 - 02:27 pm Comment from: Petey

The employee should sue the sad fucker.

I certainly would.

Sep 11, 09 - 02:56 pm Comment from: Saldin

Notice that the iPhone owner's colleague (therefore, Microsoft employee too) didn't phrase his analogy the other around?

The guy is basically saying WinMo devices are a Chevy to an iPhone's BMW...

Sep 11, 09 - 03:02 pm Comment from: Zeke

'you just don't pick up the CEO of Chevy in a BMW.'

Microsoft should be so lucky as to have a single product that provides the performance and value of a Chevrolet Corvette. Let's stop insulting Chevrolet by comparing them to Microsoft.

MSFT up 27.87% year to date. (quite good)
AAPL up 101.57% year to date.

I put my money where my mouth is. AAPL

Sep 11, 09 - 04:04 pm Comment from: Dinjin201

What would be cool is if Steve jobs sent him an iPhone or iPod (free) engraved with Jobs signature smile that would be epic.

Sep 11, 09 - 04:32 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

Why didn't someone video the incident with their Windows Mobile phone?

Couldn't they figure out how to use it? wink
