In (I think) last week's issue of Time, Gates suggested that Ballmer should be considered for its year-end list of the 100 most influential people because of all he's done for the tech world. The only explanation I can think of is that Ballmer must have incriminating photos of Bill from college or something.

Yes XP is better and more stable than Vista, it's better than the latest Mac OS as well IMHO.

I played with a Mac for a few hours today, I didnt like it at all, the icons look very amateurish and it's harder to find things on Mac.

My ex just bought an PeeCee laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic and was going "loco" to get it for the first run.
Install all the Virus Soft and so on......
After a couple of hours playing around she could connect to internet wireless over my Time Capsule. Yipiiiieeee...

Now, after a couple of day's she want to install the XP that she is using in her office.

Those 160,000+ signers of that XP petition are 160,000+ potential Mac converts of MS doesn't care about the petition. And that's just the beginning. Hopefully we can pull most of them out of Bellevue.

Of course, there is not a big demand. The smart ones are switching to Macs, the ones that have already upgraded to Vista can't send email to voice their protest, the ones that haven't upgraded don't believe that Vista could possibly be as bad as they have heard, and the rest of them can't read or write.

Yea, it can be hard to ween yourself off of a Fischer-Price color scheme.

What's important to note here is that we, the end users, are not Microsoft's customers, therefore our feedback is not heard.

MSFT's customers are manufacturers (via OEM licenses) and corporations with volume licenses.

Then again, the bad communication between MSFT and its customers should surprise no one, after Vista's driver fiasco...

Once again, it shows how convenient the current business model is in MSFT's world for MSFT interests, but no one else's.

Apparantly the Mac is too successful in the French-speaking part of Belgium. Hence that innovation center, I suppose. MS tries to line up politicians who think making agreements with MS will enhance their carreers, but they may be taken down with beleaguered MS.

In any case, how does adopting any open source of whichever sort stop anybody ever improving the software licensed under it?

Now, I'm not Stallman. I've got no hang-up about what licence people choose for their software, but the problem with Gates's statement is it's just not true. Does he really think people will believe this bullshit? Gates isn't stupid enough to believe what he's just said. But, apparently, he is stupid enough to think others will.

Jobs despite his great gifts may be a control freak and a bit of a nutter, but at least he doesn't dance like a monkey, tell stupid lies in public, or corrupt people setting ISO standards. Microsoft is run by buffoons, liars, and fraudsters. Is it any wonder their reputation is in the toilet?

I read XP Better's comment above and laughed myself silly. Typical of a Windows user to be able to get directly to the heart of the system - its icons.

This is just marketspeak. Monkey boy ballmer knows full well the demand to keep XP around is there, but if they admit to that then they're admitting to Vista's failure. Not to mention that extending support for XP doesn't jive well with their long term three step plan:

1) Force customers to upgrade
2) ...?
3) Profit!

I agree that balmer is a turd, but he's not completely stupid.

Gotta hand it to Microsoft, though. Not often do customers beg for a company to keep selling them an antiquated, inferior and security-problem ladden product for a few more years. Even when customers begged Coca-Cola to sell Coke Classic, at least Coke Classic had no problems with its taste.
