Bank of America expects next-gen 3G Apple iPhone launch in 2nd quarter
Saturday, March 29, 2008 - 09:15 PM EST

"Apple Inc. is expected to launch a high-speed wireless version of iPhone in the second quarter and produce as many as 8 million of the devices in the third quarter, according to Bank of America," Sinead Carew and Scott Hillis report for Reuters.

Carew and Hillis report, "'Our latest channel checks point to a significant production build of a 3G iPhone beginning in the month of June after an initial small build in May,' Bank of America analyst Scott Craig said."

"Craig said that now he expects production volume to be much higher than his previous estimates. He said Apple planned to build more than 3 million high-speed iPhones in May followed by more than 8 million in the third quarter of the year," Carew and Hillis report.

"Craig, who had previously estimated 8 million iPhone units for the whole of 2008, said that was starting to look conservative unless some of the plans were pushed back," Carew and Hillis report. "Many other analysts have said they expect Apple, which is holding a developer conference in June, to launch an advanced iPhone around that time."

I'm just trying to figure out what Apple is adding besides a 3G radio. There's bound to be a surprise.

Reuters is a National Enquirer wannabe.

how many times does bob have to write inane comments to make us think his opinion counts. As many inane comments as microsoft execs telling us vista is great. Really

My guess: A second camera and Video Messaging. Maybe not a full-duplex vPhone yet, due to bandwidth considerations... But why not? Give those bastards at RIM something to loose sleep over. As far as GPS goes... it's not worth the power drain to me, unless they make it only come on when docked (say, in yer car). The cell tower triangulation-thingama-whatsis worked flawlessly on my recent trip down the Oregon coast. If you haven't noticed yet, you can enter a destination, then hit route 'from current location' (or something) and BAM! Get from here to there, even if you Can't Get There From Here.

Trouble is the wretched turn-by-turn navigation UI is created for brainless dunces who can't read a map. No, I don't need every little turn explained to me. Ho ho. But if I don't hit 'next' at every corner the whole system is thrown off, and I'm 40 miles down the interstate, trying to get to the good bit where it tells me what bloody exit I should be looking for. You can hit the locator, but it doesn't edit or update the route. So it's good, but it could be better. Much better.

I didn't even tell you about my troubles.

Mar 29, 08 - 11:41 pm Comment from: silverhawk

When I'm going on a trip I just load the address of where I'm staying into the address book on my MPB or iPod touch. Before I leave I bring it up on the touch over wi-fi so always have my map of the area with me. It works great.

do we have any real evidence of this being true? How does it fit in with the SDK that's in June? Would Apple release a bunch of new features right after they open up the original? It doesn't make sense to me to obsolete-ify the original iPhone with a new one right when the SDK comes out. Maybe I don't know what i'm talking about.

I'm guessing (besides the 3G)-

-Two cameras (one on the back and one on the front)
-32 gb of storage
-tactile feedback in the form of a software update (demonstrated as being possible by an jailbroken app).
-Colors?

That's what I would guess.

Mar 30, 08 - 11:54 am Comment from: 3G Question

When a 3G phone is available, does anyone know if it will also work on the Edge system too? Or will the data functions only be available in upgraded 3G areas?

Doesn't Apple hold a patent to embed a camera into a display screen? If Apple could figure out how to make that technology work, the impact would be HUGE. (People walking into poles, other folks, traffic - all while video conferencing. But on the other hand, I guess people do that now with text messaging.) Perhaps the reason we haven't seen any new monitors from Apple is that they are currently working on this technology?

Yeah, any unlikely probability - but that doesn't stop the analysts.

Peace.

Mar 30, 08 - 01:46 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ 3G Question

Well that would be pretty useless if it were true. No, I believe that a 3G phone will use whatever system is available.

Are we ever to get Voice Dialing??

Mar 30, 08 - 03:54 pm Comment from: Macintosh

@ Chrissyone

Ya know, instead of pushing the next button everytime you make a turn, you can just press the little eyeball looking button and choose list... Much easier, for me at least.

I don't see GPS coming anytime soon. I like the maps and such just how they are. I do see a lot of people doing things out of order though when trying to find things though.

For those of you that find maps / directions confusing, find where you want to go first, then click directions and either use current location or type an address.

To find a shop or whatever, make sure you zoom into the city or county its in first, or hit current location. The map only searches the area visible on the map. I see many people searching the entire state or even the USA for something that is 3 miles from their house.

Just had to get that off my chest. I feel better now.

I saw that article too. Amazing concept! It seems that it's not too far off from being achievable, but these things always tend to be 20x harder than I think they are...

Yeah but they predicted the roll out of the 3G iPhone as they were getting out of a plane in Kosovo while avoiding sniper fire. We have been doing it from the comfort of our homes.

Just my $0.02

Mar 30, 08 - 06:00 pm Comment from: aaplsaur

A GPS built into the iPhone would be of negligible value and would severely shorten battery life and would increase the iPhone size. A better idea is to use a BlueTooth GPS receiver that mounts to the roof of your car. It would receive satellite signals better, use it's own rechargeable batteries (some self-charge with a tiny solar panel) and would always be at the ready in your car, where it is most useful. GPS doesn't work indoors or even in cars unless you have a sunroof or stick the receiver to the windshield, which is not the most convenient place for your phone. The product exists. All that we need is a little piece of software ala iPhone SDK.

In Australia, I haven't seen a 3G phone offered for sale that didn't have a camera on the front for video calling. It is part of what the term "3G" means, at least in this country. I'm not talking about Skype or similar, but just direct mobile to mobile video calling across the 3G (or even faster UMTS with HSDPA) network has been around for ages, but I've never seen anyone walk into anything while on he phone. tongue laugh

If my three-year-old, rather disappointing HTC TYTN can do video, why wouldn't a version 2 iPhone? If the 2+ year-old Nokia N95 can do GPS, then why not a version 2 iPhone?

By the way, I'm still using my three-year-old, rather disappointing HTC TYTN only because Apple doesn't yet sell a 3G handset (in any country, but particularly in Australia). Don't get me started on what I think of Windows Mobile after three years (and two versions) of this POS.

Mar 31, 08 - 07:54 am Comment from: jtc

what credibility does bank of america have for making rumors???

Thats like MS announcing they expect BMW to sell 20% more cars than last year. Which maybe they will... maybe they wont.

As long as the stock keeps going up im happy :D

Mar 31, 08 - 08:45 am Comment from: Anim8me2

@MediaXYZ

How often do you actually use said video conferencing feature or the GPS? What is your battery life like?

I am just curious if we do get the 3G iPhone with the rumored features (I think we won't... just another reason being planted to short on Apple) what we can expect from the battery.

Mar 31, 08 - 09:10 am Comment from: Chris M

I disagree. I think GPS would be great in the iPhone. Battery life would only take a hit when you are actually USING the GPS. So unless your specifically using the iPhone or turn-by-turn directions, there would be no hit... and honestly, there are very limited applications for turn-by-turn directions outside of a car. If your in the car, you have a power supply.

I think Apple would be smart to further their partnership with google and make a full blown turn-by-turn directions GPS solution. They could even sell it as an app at the app store instead of loading it on every phone.

Garmin is already working on their GPS/phone.. Apple should trump them.

The current directions app on the iphone is adequate to replace a traditional map.... but is NOT adequate to replace a traditional GPS navigator. In fact, one of those cheap Mio models beats the crap out of the iphone in this arena.

"Why would a cretin wonder why his comments are being deleted? Oh, yes. Because he's a cretin."

Printing from the iPhone

Who cares about 3G if I can't print my Ticketmaster purchased tickets from the iPhone?

What good is it to be able to buy your airplane ticket from your 3G-enabled iPhone, if you have to go to your computer to print the boarding pass?

Apr 01, 08 - 08:37 am Comment from: Deen

When can I expect iphone in India, any idea?
