Behind Google’s FUD campaign against Apple iPhone
Friday, March 14, 2008 - 04:30 PM EST

"Forgive my flippancy, but I'm trying hard not to bust into giggles after reading about Rich Miner's [group manager for mobile platforms at Google] prediction that sales of Android-based devices will outstrip sales of the iPhone," Charles Cooper writes for CNET.

"'Once you have devices out there from Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and so on, there's a much larger potential market on Android than for the iPhone,' he said during a conference held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif.," Cooper reports. "He later added, 'There are things I saw people doing with the first version of the Android SDK that it seems like you can't do with the iPhone at least at the moment.'

"All of which may be true and yet totally beside the point," Cooper writes.

"Let's call Google on what this really is: Considering how there are currently ZERO Android devices in the market, Miner is engaging in (pardon the pun) major trash talking," Cooper writes. "Maybe Microsoft became such an easy target that Eric Schmidt decided it was the right time to pump up the volume at Apple's expense. I don't think Steve Jobs is sweating any."

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Note: Back in mid-January, The New York Times' John Markoff spent a half-hour with Apple CEO Steve Jobs and reported that Jobs "was equally skeptical about Google’s decision to develop smartphone software. 'Having created a phone its a lot harder than it looks,' he said. 'We’ll see how good their software is and we’ll see how consumers like it and how quickly it is adopted. I actually think Google has achieved their goal [of seeking not to get locked out of the mobile phone world] without Android, and I now think Android hurts them more than it helps them. It’s just going to divide them and people who want to be their partners.'"

It's all more than a little bit incestuous:
• Google CEO Dr. Eric Schmidt is a member of Apple's Board of Directors.
• Kleiner Perkins’ John Doerr is a member of Google's Board of Directors and just launched the $100 million iFund for Apple iPhone.
• Avon CEO Andrea Jung is a member of Apple's Board of Directors and Google's Rich Miner puts Avon lipstick on his pig.

Sounds like a Paranoid Android to me.

Mar 14, 08 - 03:36 pm Comment from: dallas

Yeah, I like both companies. I hope Apple releases an iTunes for Android, that would be really cool (That or the Record co's stop trying to kill iTunes and just release their catalogs DRM free).

Apple needs some good competition on the OS front. RIM doesn't have it, MS doesn't have it, Palm sure doesn't have it.

GOOOOOOO GOOOOOOGLE!

(ps, I own stock in both, so I am rooting for both.)

I tend to agree with Cooper on this one. Anytime someone starts talking about how Apple's tech doesn't really stack up against vaporware, it smacks of Ballmer-esque FUD campaigning.

" . . . it smacks of Ballmer-esque FUD campaigning."

I'd say that barely scratches the Surface.

Mar 14, 08 - 04:12 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

If it gets ugly between Google & Apple, this could be bad for them both, since they both have a giant foe up north. Could this also make Eric Schmidt's position on Apples board difficult?

This isn't about Google vs. Apple, it's about Google and Apple vs. Microsoft. It's in both company's interests to break Microsoft's attempt to extend their control into the smart phone market. If Apple ends up with 30-40% of the market and Android gets 20-30% (or visa-versa) who cares? The point is that Microsoft's share shrinks dramatically. RIM may get steamrolled in the process, but, hey, RIM was never going to make it out of the business phone market anyway.

It's funny seeing Cooper, a MS-kisserupper, trying to figure out who he needs to bash or defend between Apple and Google. Apparently, he's decided Google is the bigger threat to MS, and so he's chosen to attack them!

I keep hearing how open source this and open source that, is so great. How being open and letting people have choice is a great thing. Look at the number of projects on Openforge, can you find some thing you need. How many normal people that are not geeks like us ever find the website much less the thing we are looking for ? Linux has been out for years and the only reason that it has a high market share is because of geeks, not because normal people are discovering it in droves. Lets look at Java and run anywhere, where is it now ? Applications are available for almost 60% of phones worldwide but what is the sell through ? No market, Mobile Carrier driven, only available to install through your phone for the most part. Very low. Ringtones sell, wallpapers sell, applications, not so much.

There is something to be said to a controlled, available in a store on your phone, with restrictions on capability. While the Androids of the world can possibly be offered in various form factors and allow you to do anything, I bet there will be very little money in it for developers.

Open is a nice Idealogical feeling. I am going to allow anyone to build anything and sell anyway they want. The problem is the you accept no responsibility for abuse by developers or plain bad programs or ripping of the customer. More then that how do you promote the applications available ? How do you maintain performance and stability of the device ? Is it the user's responsibility ? Well then, you have just made it the perfect device for the geek, not for the masses.

Throwing "Open" as a sound bite is nice to get geeks to cream in their pants but does not really provide money in the pocket except to the small, small minority. So Google dream on, "don't be evil" was nice until you grew and reality kicked in.

I think the title says it all.

A couple of years back Microsoft said, over and over, 'with all of our parters there is no way Apple can dominate'.

Uh-Huh

(Hint)
It's the Software.
Always has been and always will be.

Holy crap, the pig lipstick thing is so funny.

Best MDN take ever.

Mar 14, 08 - 07:43 pm Comment from: oh no my shorts

Pig lips? Ever had pickled pig's lips? Quite the delicacy in some parts. Ranks right up there with fried chicken sphincters. "Crunchy little O-rings, just *bursting* with flavor!"

In the snack foods aisle at my local supermarket, they have about as much shelf space and market share as the Android.

Which is to say, zero.

I want to like Android I really do. The name is cute but if they had Apple's touch they would have created a much better looking mascot. grin

To read all the FUD you would think if every person on earth did not own an iP*o* and you can't control rockets from it that means Apple has failed. Even if only half the people who has an iPod buy an iPod Touch or iPhone, the sales will still be phenomenal. That'll likely happen before even 1 Android is sold.

My question is, if you can already access Google apps through a good mobile browser from any phone, why do you need a Gphone OS?

Mar 15, 08 - 02:41 am Comment from: ken1w

Google is likely to fail because they are following Microsoft's model. One company doing the software and another doing the hardware means the final product will never be as "tight" as iPhone. It means the platform can never innovate as quickly as iPhone, because the producers of the hardware and software are co-dependent, each with their own agendas.

iPhone is currently a success story that has the industry scrambling mainly because the work was done in secret. Google cannot work on Android in secret. Any worthwhile innovation will be known in advance and Apple will be able to implement a counter-innovation before Android sees any advantange.

Mar 15, 08 - 04:40 am Comment from: The Other Steve

No big deal. Let them both put out phones and let the customer decide what they want.

It'll be fun!

Uh-Huh... We're "Dominating". We have .4% of the mobile phone market.

Mar 15, 08 - 10:34 am Comment from: MikeH

Has Google any expertise in manufacturing? In marketing a product? Apple never built a phone either. It will be interesting, but it's still vaporware.

Mar 15, 08 - 10:41 am Comment from: eMax

There is no reason Android and iPhone cannot co-exsist. There will be iphone market share, and Android will eat into the remaining market.

Just like iPod and Zune. Zune grew, and is growing, but into the 10% that is left after iPod.

Why is anyone against Android?

Mar 15, 08 - 11:36 am Comment from: Goople

Android was/is necessary for political reasons, because the big boys tried to freeze out Google from Mobile...it will sure dull relationships between Apple and Google though.

However its clear that Google is now squarely in Microsoft's crosshairs...hope they're prepared. Their best weapon is to win spectrum IMO.

Mar 15, 08 - 11:41 am Comment from: ken1w

> Why is anyone against Android?

@ eMax

You compare Android to Zune (Zune is to iPod as Android is to iPhone), and then ask "why anyone is against Android?"

Using your analogy, if Android is like Zune, you should be asking why anyone would be FOR Android.

Mar 15, 08 - 12:13 pm Comment from: Synthmeister

Android is interesting for the handset makers because it offers an alternative to their own long-in-the-tooth OS (Symbian) and the constraints of MS WinCE. However, they will still have to deal with the myopia of the TelCos and the lack of an industrial strength OS like the iPhone and industrial strength hardware design of Apple.

That's what Steve was talking about—even if the OS is GREAT, say, like Be OS, there are still several pieces missing from making a great, working, affordable product.

Mar 15, 08 - 01:00 pm Comment from: Ampar

"it will sure dull relationships between Apple and Google though."

I doubt that. Android bound phones and the iPhone are suited for different markets.

Mar 15, 08 - 03:11 pm Comment from: UltraVisitor

Apple could use some good competition.

And people should have a less expensive alternative to the iPhone that doesn't suck.

I hope Android does well.

Mar 15, 08 - 04:32 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Apple could use some good competition."

You're missing the point.

Mar 15, 08 - 08:22 pm Comment from: Drunk Cheney

If Android is really anything of interest - Google and Apple could both have large shares of the market for years and do very well. (possibly squelching any MS offering)

Me - I not waiting for the Android to be released - I'm not interested at all.

Mar 16, 08 - 08:23 am Comment from: BiZarRo BaLlmEr

Ampar gets it:

"... Android bound phones and the iPhone are suited for different markets."

The market is huge, a billion or so mobile phones? Does anyone really think Android will not show up on any of the other 990,000,000 sold, taking into consideration the 10-12 million phones sold by Apple? Android has any network and any phone open for it's software, that's huge potential. Doesn't make Android better, but the available market is tremendous. Unless Apple enters the lower end market, there is a huge untapped market waiting for better software/hardware, hear that Apple? I'm waiting for a cheaper, less feature rich phone. Just want a simple Apple phone/ipod for cheap money.

@ TinTin

Nice one. I’m sure Google need help from you, last I heard they were doing a lot better than Apple.

And if you want look for useful open source software you should have a look at http://webkit.org/ . They created the rendering software you use in Safari!!! Just because you can’t see a big bouncing icon in your dock saying open source doesn’t mean it isn’t being used by a lot of programs you use every day.
