Beleaguered Dell developing pocket-sized Internet device
Monday, June 29, 2009 - 04:07 PM EST

Apple Online Store "Engineers at Dell Inc. have been developing a pocket-sized device for tapping into the Internet, people familiar with the company's plans said," Justin Scheck reports for The Wall Street Journal.

"The gadget uses Google Inc.'s Android software, these people said," Scheck reports. "Two people who said they saw early prototypes described the device as slightly larger than Apple Inc.'s iPod touch, which is similar to the iPhone but does not have cellphone capabilities."

Scheck reports, "People familiar with the effort said Dell began developing the device last year, after the company aborted an attempt to compete with Apple in the music-player business. Some of the engineers working on the music player were then assigned to help develop the small mobile device. One Dell engineer has been in charge of customizing Google's free Android software, which is currently used in cellphones, for the device, they said."

Scheck reports, "Another person who was briefed on the company's plans recently said Dell may begin selling the device during the second half of 2009, though this person said the plan could be delayed or scrapped entirely."

Jun 29, 09 - 03:10 pm Comment from: _Bill_

Whatever happened to the WinMo-based Dell Axom?

Jun 29, 09 - 03:11 pm Comment from: Nightstar

Hum.... They did have such a device. One was called the x3i PDA...

Sounds like they need something new for sales...

Jun 29, 09 - 03:12 pm Comment from: MacinScott

Please oh please Dell, bring this to market.

 can only reap the benefits of such a foolish decision.

And the added side effect is that Ballmer will throw more chairs because it uses Android.

Jun 29, 09 - 03:13 pm Comment from: Daily Reader

The only thing that's worse than skating to where the puck is....is skating to where it was.

Good grief!! Can Dell really be this lame?

Jun 29, 09 - 03:19 pm Comment from: quietly, please

Crack market analyst and all-around genius Rob Enderle is on board with this idea, and he wants you all to know that it's going to eat the iPod Touch for lunch.

And if it doesn't, he's going to insist that if they hadn't screwed up the implementation that he delivered to them on stone tablets, then it would have.

I wonder if this is related to that smartphone they tried to design back in March. You know, the one that was so dull the mobile carriers basically told them "thanks, but no thanks"?

It's sure to be Dell-Ditty-Licious!

Jun 29, 09 - 03:25 pm Comment from: freebeer

Even Dell realize they cannot count on Redmond forever.

That sort of optimistic enthusiasm guarantees success!
...

Or failure!

"How hard can it be?"

As it turns out, very. wink

Jun 29, 09 - 03:32 pm Comment from: Jersey_Trader

Dell will make the same iKiller mistake as the rest. It is not just the hardware, it is the hardware, apps, software and service. If you are not sure about this, ask someone in Microsoft's Zune department.

Jun 29, 09 - 03:32 pm Comment from: Wade

There are engineers at Dell...?

Jun 29, 09 - 03:36 pm Comment from: Jamie

One Dell engineer in charge of the software?

Nothing like a bit of pressure to motivate you!

Jun 29, 09 - 03:37 pm Comment from: iPhoner

Jobs is already holding the prototype. The thing is huge - I don't expect many sales.

There already is a "pocket sized device for tapping into the internet".

It is called the iPod touch.

Jun 29, 09 - 03:58 pm Comment from: spyinthesky

Now who was it who said that he was advising dell on how to make a killer music player that would seriously threaten Apple. Name escapes me somehow.

Justin Scheck reports "people familiar", "these people", "Two people", "People familiar", "Another person" and "this person." That is a brief excerpt from the above. Justin, if you are a professional writer then you need help. Please go to Uncle Walt's office and ask for help please in writing an article.

Jun 29, 09 - 04:07 pm Comment from: silverhawk

I am not a professional writer. I over used the word "please."

Jun 29, 09 - 04:18 pm Comment from: The Batboy

Reading this makes me ask some questions:

1. Dell has usually been connected at the hip with Microsoft. Does this mean that Dell is fed up with the anemic progress and terrible interface/performance of Windows Mobile?
2. As an extension of #1 above, does this mean that Dell is fed up with Steve Ballmer, or is this a wedge to get Microsoft to get off its duff on developing a suitable mobile operating system?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not rooting for any of the above. I'm an Apple kinda guy. But I also handicap the horses. Dell's business is pretty flat. They're stuck in the trench warfare of being a PC box maker, with its low margins and competition based more on price than anything else. That Dell is looking in this direction means the company is trying anything to bake in better profit margins. And why pay a Microsoft tax for its OS when Dell can turn to Google Android for free?

I still believe that the iPod touch offers advantages over any competition, and I also expect its hardware to be updated soon. Dell will likely try to compete on price and swipe a bit of market share. But the fact that it's now public information that Dell is selecting Android over Win-Mo means that all blissful between Round Rock and Redmond.

If that's true, I'm sure that The Empire is frantically at work on a new star destroyer. They attempted to show off a lame prototype in Spain earlier this year, and the demo was greeted with yawns. No doubt, there is much chair throwing taking place in a boardroom in the Pacific Northwest.

Dell or no Dell, the fact that Google Android was chosen is one big kick in Steve Ballmer's generous stomach.

Save the R&D;money on this thing and give it back to the shareholders.

Of course it's going to be called the Dell Shitty.

Jun 29, 09 - 04:37 pm Comment from: January 24, 1984

It'll be "crack-a-lacking."

Jun 29, 09 - 04:51 pm Comment from: KingMel

If you enlarge the iPhone (or put longer range wireless (such as 3G or better), cameras and a microphone on a somewhat enlarged iPod touch), then you would have the internet device that I am seeking. Portable, but usable with more display real estate than the iPhone or iPod touch.

You could use such a device as a video phone, or you could add a bluetooth headset to use it as a regular phone. I like hands-free operation, even with a regular cell phone, and this device would be bigger and heavier.

Jun 29, 09 - 04:52 pm Comment from: ROFLCOPTER

Ah, Dell. I think they should shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.

Jun 29, 09 - 04:54 pm Comment from: ROFLCOPTER

After everything I've suffered at Dell's hands, this deserves to fail.

Jun 29, 09 - 05:00 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

Great news and a good start for the innovators at Dell. I have my fingers crossed for a Windows Mobile upgrade from that Android nonsense in version 2.

Looks like it's game, set and match. Dell wins and MAC loses. Again. Buh-bye MAC.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Jun 29, 09 - 05:09 pm Comment from: Bizlaw

Wow, Zune Tang, I expected more fire and brimstone from you about Dell defecting to Android. Could it be that even Zune Tang has written off Dell?

But more importantly, will this new Dell Device come in primary colors and be made in an ultra-cool, musically hip factory?

Jun 29, 09 - 05:14 pm Comment from: FloydPink

Oh boy, the icrap

Jun 29, 09 - 05:33 pm Comment from: MacFan

Will the humor never stop? Thanks Dell for the comedy that is anything you design. Keep spending your money to stimulate the economy, we appreciate it. Bye bye.

"Dell will make the same iKiller mistake as the rest. It is not just the hardware, it is the hardware, apps, software and service. If you are not sure about this, ask someone in Microsoft's Zune department."

But this time they are not using Microbersoft. They are using Andriod.

Android costs nothing, and it is not from Microsoft.

@Zune Tang,

" I have my fingers crossed for a Windows Mobile upgrade from that Android nonsense in version 2."

You just got your wish buddy boy, they just renamed "Windows Mobile" to "Windows Phone" and poof, we have a new platform.

By the time Microsoft abandons the mobile phone market let's take a guess as to how many times they will rename their platform. I sure hope they cover every possible name so as to make it harder for "MAC" to name their products.

As for Andriod, for it to really take off, Google should give it to Microsoft. I am sure Microsoft could come up with a better name for it so that it can outsell "MAC's" little keyboard-missing walkie-talkie curiosity.

ZiT- get a life. And an education. And some therapy. You have no constructive purpose here- guess what. You no longer exist- no credibility whatsoever. What I thought was sarcasm is sheer provocation. You will hear no more from me. I follow my bliss- I don't chase arguments. Life's too short- some are too immature to realize that yet, though.

Guys guys guys.
As soon as I read the troll's 'name' I know there's nothing but infantile drivel to follow, so I don't bother.
Every forum has a troll.

Is he a mover and shaker? Does he own a company or is he involved in important research? No.
He is a sad, peculiar individual wasting his life goading complete strangers on an online forum. He's probably sitting in his mother's house picking his nose and eating it while he refreshes the web pages in case someone reacts to his pap.

So sad.

This is actually the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Dell gets Android for its pocket-sized device. Google can add Dell along with HP for a netbook version of Android. Eventually Dell will install Android on all its laptop and desktop PCs, making Windows XP or 7 even less relevant.

Jun 29, 09 - 09:44 pm Comment from: bobchr

Looks like DELL is trying to apply their theories of supply chain management to R&D;. That's bound to get some brilliant results...NOT.

Of course, being the MS-enamored crew that they are Dell will create their own proprietary version of Clippy, that helpful Office Assistent. Their version will be a folksy, bucolic type who looks like he might come from a rural neighborhood near Round Rock. He'll be widely known as "The Farmer in the Dell."
