Beleaguered Dell slashes forecast for notebook shipments by 20-percent

Apple Store“Dell has slashed its notebook forecast for this year by as much as 20 percent, and Taiwan-based original design manufacturers (ODMs) say the vendor has been reducing its notebook orders, according to a report published Monday by CitiGroup analyst Richard Gardner,” Edward F. Moltzen reports for CRN.

Moltzen reports, “Dell had originally forecast shipping 20 million notebooks in 2007, but now the Round Rock, Texas-based PC giant is projecting that it will ship 16 million laptops, Gardner said.”

MacDailyNews Take: 16 million! Oh, the humanity! If you know someone who’s about to inflict themselves with a Dell laptop, please ask them: Why buy a Dell when Apple’s Intel-based computers will run both Mac OS X and Windows? Friends don’t let friends buy Dell PCs.

Moltzen continues, “Gardner said Dell’s lowered projection of 16 million notebooks for this year tracks higher than CitiGroup’s own forecast, according to Gardner… If the CitiGroup report bears out, it would indicate continued trouble for Dell in the PC and notebook space. During the fourth quarter, Hewlett-Packard grew its notebook shipments by 57 percent year over year. Dell’s notebook shipments, by comparison, grew by 2 percent.”

Moltzen reports, “Checks with ODMs also indicated that Apple is ‘a bright spot,’ and CitiGroup is forecasting Apple to ship between 2.6 million and 3 million MacBooks this year, in line or a little bit more than current forecasts. So far, MacBook Pro shipments have seen ‘modest’ growth on a year-over-year basis, Gardner wrote.”

  1. THE only real reason I see out there of why crap such as Dell or Gateway sell is if a person doesn’t realize the difference of a Mac OS versus Winblows OS and goes by the hardware only. As much as we think it is a great deal for a MacBook (and by Apple’s high standards it is), someone looking at a 13″ screen on “this one” versus a 15″ screen on the others for the same dollar cost… well we know that is 16 million Dell versus about 3 million Apple laptops projected. OI think many Apple fans would like the MacBook to offer a 15″ model for about the price of the current black MacBook (~$1500).

  2. Dijonaise,

I believe that the article says the MacBook PRO had modest growth. The MacBook had stellar growth.

Since June 6th, 2005, DELL’s stock has dropped almost 50%. Why did I say since June 6th? That was when Apple announced the move to Intel.

  3. Had I the money, I would certainly replace my Powerbook with one of those brand-spanking new MBPs to contribute to their modest growth. Sadly, that is not currently the case, and my Powerbook’s a year old. The one thing I wish is that the MBP had the magnetic latches of the MB. Those things are just so damn cool! No latches to snap off (like my current broken PB latch=\ ).

  4. Come on now! You’re slipping!

    I’ll help you out…

    Give us an S, an I, a D! Give us an A, a G, a T! Give us an M, a B, a T, another T, an S! What’s that stand for?!

Shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders!

  5. Given the numbers that I am seeing, while the percent of computers sold by Apple is still low, it would be very interesting to see Apple and the others ranked by computers in the mid and upper price range.

In other words, if we compare (excuse the pun ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> ) Apples to apples, how does Apple stand on sales of simiar priced/equiped machines???

Besides, since Apple does not sell the loss leaders, it does not have to make up for the lost profit on higher machines. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

    Just a thought.

  8. I cannot stand the trite and caddy commentary of the “MacDailyNewsTake”. Its lucky you have decent content on your site. Its like having to listen to a valley girl who, unfortunately for me, has something I want to know.

  9. True story: As high school tech support, I had a conversation with a teacher and it went something like this:

Teacher: “The two computers in the teachers room, there’s the Apple one and the good one, I can’t seem to get the good one to work”

Me: “Did you try the Apple?”

Teacher: “No, I wanted to use the good computer”

Me: “But you couldn’t get it to work?”

    Teacher: “No”

Me: “So why didn’t you try the Apple?”

Teacher: “Because I wanted to use the good computer”

Me: “Well, it stands to reason that the computer that works would be the good one, right?”

Teacher: “Yeah, but the Apple is the only one working and I don’t know how to use it. Plus I need to use MS Word”

Me: “The Apple has MS Word and works better than the PC. You are going to have to use that one for now”

Teacher: “I’ll just go home for now, and try again tomorrow”

    Apple = eMac
    “Good one” = Dell

  10. Let’s see; Dell ships 16 million notebooks in a bad year. Apple ships 3 million in a good year. And Dell is “Beleaguered”?

    LOL! LOL! LOL!

  11. @ Reality Check

Of course you know it’s all about which way the stats are trending. And more importantly, how much actual *money is being made. Apple is making a tidy profit on it’s sales, while Dell’s sliver-thin margins offer plenty of revenue but little in the way of earnings. What do you cut when you have shaven everything so thin you can see through it?
