Best Buy starts sales of Apple iPhone 3G in 1,000 US stores
Monday, September 08, 2008 - 10:27 AM EST

"Electronics retailer Best Buy Co. Inc. begins its much-anticipated sales of Apple Inc.'s iPhone Monday, becoming the first U.S. chain to do so outside of Apple and AT&T Inc.'s own stores," The Associated Press reports.

"The Minneapolis-based chain will offer the popular cell phone that has a cult-like following in 970 full-size stores as well as 16 smaller Best Buy Mobile stores," AP reports.

Interesting how Apple is slowly pushing itself back into big box retail. Their strategy seems very cautious and selective, which seems to be working.

They should also allow Apple value added retailers who are licensed to service and repair Macs to sell iPhones.

"cult-like following"

It's like they can't help themselves.

I probably said this before but that Best Buy ad is seriously misleading the way it suggests that the "original" price is hundreds of dollars more. They directly imply that you are "saving" hundreds of dollars and that it's a "discount" price, when in fact it's $.99 more than it is in any other store.

In my country such ads are strictly against the law.
Hurrah for the USA? :p

At what percentage of the market share will they drop the "cult-like following" and niche.

This is starting to look really sad for these clueless talking heads.

I think the whole MS thing with BB is to infiltrate and sabotage iPhone sales. They'll be targeting potential iPhone buyers and will talk them out into getting a WinMo device or Zune player..

Baby Boomers know bullshit when we see/smell it. We've been around. We won't be fooled again.

Jeremy: I noticed the same thing in Sunday's Best Buy ad. It shows that the retail price for the 8GB is $599 and the 16GB is $699. Then is shows the "discounted" amount after activation. I read the fine print and it says that in-store activation is required! It implies that you can purchase an un-activated iPhone for $600, but apparently you can't.

Yeah, I happened upon it at my local BB yesterday. They said they had NO TAKERS at all. I told them that folks have either already gotten them at AT&T;or Apple Store, or they are waiting to hear what Steve has to say on Tuesday.

They didn't even know about the event... *sigh*
