Boston Business Journal: Apple’s iPhone 3G has what it takes for business users

Business people interested in Apple’s new iPhone 3G have questions, Eric Convey reports for The Boston Business Journal.

• How well will it work on a corporate network?

• Will it handle the basic applications my company requires?

• And most important, is it fast enough to be truly usefully for employing those applications or surfing the Web?

Convey reports, “A 30-minute test inside the AT&T Store on Boylston Street this morning before it opened suggested many a business user will be more than happy… The iPhone does indeed handle Microsoft Exchange easily… Significantly, one can easily download applications such as salesforce.com.”

“You won’t throw away your notebook computer if you buy the new iPhone. But you may give it a lot less use,” Convey reports.

  1. If one is planning on using mobileme for their business, they should probably wait and see if the service is more reliable than .Mac. The problems folks are experiencing today are still related to the transition so the test really starts at some point next week after the transition. Apple made it a point to talk about how their push notification servers were extremely scalable – I hope this holds true for mobileme. What is funny is that ultimately mobileme users may end up having some respect for how resilient and reliable RIM’s service has been over the years. I’m reserving judgment but time will tell. Stay tuned…

This has already been true with my blackberry. I don’t travel at all with a work laptop any more, just the BB. So I would think there would be even less reason with an iPhone. Mind you, I’m cheating somewhat, because I travel with my Macbook instead. If I need to do any serious attachment work I forward to the Macbook. I have never had any problems. Not that that should surprise anyone (except maybe ZT).

Ha! Magic word “road”, as in where I don’t take my work laptop.
