Boston Globe: Apple’s iPhone an elegant marvel and important, in same way as Apple’s first Mac
Saturday, June 30, 2007 - 09:05 AM EST

"After the relentless buildup of the past six months, the temptation to trash Apple Inc.'s new iPhone is pretty much irresistible," Hiawatha Bray reports for The Boston Globe. "If only I could."

MacDailyNews Take: Why does hype - most of it generated not by Apple, but by media outlets and reporters - make Bray want to trash the iPhone as opposed to say, vindicate it or something? It's interesting to note Bray's desire and proclivity to go negative, which unfortunately seems to permeate the mainstream media today.

Bray continues, "The iPhone is exactly as cool as you've heard, and then some. For it's not just cool; this phone is important, in the same way that Apple's first Macintosh computer was important. The Mac showed us a better way to interact with computers, and forced the entire industry to follow its lead. Here we go again."

"Other phones look like high-school science fair gadgets compared with the iPhone, an elegant marvel that even a hype-weary journalist has to love," Bray reports.

Full article here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "MacDoc" for the heads up.]

MacDailyNews Take: In the end, despite the temptation against doing so, Bray not only vindicates iPhone, but effusively praises it - and rightly so: Apple iPhone is that good. It is a rare game-changer. iPhone is a truly amazing device.

And the management of Telstra Australia said "Apple should stick to it's knitting" eh? Can't wait for their competition to kick them in the butt next year!

Jun 30, 07 - 08:20 am Comment from: What happened MDN?

Gee whiz MDN, this is sure not the attitude you showed last night when talking about the iBRICK.

Finally get your activation to 'take'?

Well, here I am in Sydney, Australia, wondering when the iPhone will hit our shores...

On the other hand, perhaps you all could mature it a bit before sending it over.

Jun 30, 07 - 08:22 am Comment from: Average Joe

And what makes MDN take the worst possible spin on anyone who does not sing praises to Apple as if it's the second coming? A bit of the hypocrite there.

Jun 30, 07 - 08:24 am Comment from: awesome

ia have read digg all day, here is aussie land where Phones ...

are Boring,

I Hope MDN has a subsite for Iphones etc,

What a Day,

Jun 30, 07 - 08:28 am Comment from: Lisa

Bray's desire to trash the iPhone is telling and it also emphasizes his praise.

MDN was/is right to stick up for the user over Apple/AT&T;.

You'd undersatnd if you stood in line for hours/days and then got home to find an iBrick, read Apple's manual that said your iPhone's other features should work, spent hours on another phone that worked being shuttled around AT&T;/Apple support, went to bed with a $600 iBrick, woke up the next day with a $600 iBrick, still waiting for AT&T;, and still reading why Apple's online manual says iPhone's other features should work.

MDN's article last night saved me a lot of grief trying to figure out what the heck is/was happening.

Jun 30, 07 - 08:30 am Comment from: Toby Belch

Oh MDN your 'take' is so bad!

It's quite natural to want to criticize something when you hear its name ad nauseam.
Even I was getting tired of hearing about the iPhone and I'm an Apple freak. How do you think 'normal' people react?
Your reaction is so self-righteous, it reminds me of the reaction of religious zealots when you criticize their prophet or god.
MDN, you're beginning to take every slight criticism of Apple as a personal affront.
For heaven's sake grow up!

Jun 30, 07 - 08:31 am Comment from: macfish

Telstra here is Government Controlled,

So ha we have to do what they say,

The media and Foxtel , is Telstra Controlled , Thats why so many Australians have no idea bout these cool things,

Jun 30, 07 - 08:35 am Comment from: Ken (Rev Ken, actually)

MDN: shame on you for your knee-jerk reaction!

The first sentence of that article is necessary so that the writer doesn't appear to be a fanboi. It also gave the article more credibility, since a convert is always more convincing than a faithful follower.

You are over-sensitive to criticism of Apple products, and that comes across as a lack of confidence in them.

Jun 30, 07 - 08:40 am Comment from: awesome

can someone make asite please for dating on iphone

and a diary ta,

Jun 30, 07 - 08:40 am Comment from: LukeinOz

@macfish...

Mate stop smoking the whacky tabbacy!!

Telstra is NOT government controlled.

Unless you have been swamped by your purple haze recently, you would have noticed the fight that Telstra is having with the government at the moment, and the ACCC, which is a government body!

Foxtel and Telstra have a joint venture, but they are NOT controlled by Telstra either!

And the MEDIA is HARDLY contolled by Telstra!?!?

Rupert Murdoch, Kerry Stokes, the Fairfax group and the Packer family are a few examples of names that have ownership ancd/or interests in the media in Australia, and they have NOTHING to do with Tesltra!?

1) you say Telstra is government controlled
2) you say Telstra control the media hence you are saying the government control the media in Australia! - RUBBISH!

And as to your point about Australians not knowing about these cool things...

1) if you know about it and you are in Australia, then your conspiracy theory has failed already!

2) I don't know anyone that HASN'T heard of the iPhone

3) Australia is KNOWN for quick uptake of new technolgies, including TV's, Microwaves, VCR's, DVD, Mobile Phones etc!!!

Go take another deep toke, and let the little green men come and take you!?

my 2 cents,

Luke

Jun 30, 07 - 08:46 am Comment from: macfish

at Luke, Lol,

Telstra Use to be, and O, did not know Foxtel was not controlled , OK cool.

Jun 30, 07 - 08:50 am Comment from: Admad

Last year I wanted a new mp3 player. I went to 3 different shops to view and try out an iPod -the trouble is you CAN'T try an iPod. All 3 shops said that I could look at - but only look at - the "dummy" on display but not touch the real thing unless I bought one. How is one supposed to know how easy they are to use and what they sound like? In the end I bought a Sony instead (no problem with a test-drive there). I expect the iPhone will be the same story, so I shall not be buying. Sorry Apple, I don't buy hardware "on spec".

Jun 30, 07 - 08:51 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1.

This is version 1 and by and large it is excellent. How cool are subsequent iterations and updates going to be? Other manufacturers are screwed. They haven't got the hardware design despite years of trying and they definitely haven't got the software and have even less chance of catching up to it. They've basically been complacent and are now going to pay for it.

Jun 30, 07 - 08:58 am Comment from: Big Al

MDN take is right on the money.

Hiawatha Bray has, on many occasions, been extremely negative about very good Apple hardware and software. He is also a firm believer in security through obscurity.

If he had found a flaw, he would have shouted his gleeful proclamation of doom from the rooftops.

Jun 30, 07 - 08:59 am Comment from: Awesome Anthoyn

>>Hey, you moroons! How you like it now?

LOL

Right there a more expensive paper weights, sure dell box
and you,

LOL That was not such as bad mistake, and also allot of people line up as they enjoy it, funny huh
Cool technology does that,

PS : Also the bad things about the iphone, so I can help you sound a bit more informed are:

The fact that : they are made so well that geeks can't have fun soldering stuff to them,

and They say Phone companies make more money from crap as people keep replacing, so Apples Iphone you will keep for a long time, this I have heard from Likes of cheap cell co's is a bad economic decision, . But I believe the Technology world may take another move and Software and service and Social Systems will be used on these devices,

Jun 30, 07 - 09:01 am Comment from: WindozeKiller

@ Admad,

Where the heck do you shop? Walk into any apple store and there are at least a dozen iPods you can play with. They are usually outfitted with a variety of headphone types an external speakers. I find this helpful to see the quality of accessories for my own iPod.

Bought a sony because they let you play with it? Kia gives you gifts to test drive their crap, too. I have a nice Shrek DVD thanks to them, but I would never buy a Kia in a million years.

Even if you don't buy it there, your first stop for Apple products should be an Apple Store.

Jun 30, 07 - 09:05 am Comment from: Admad

WindozeKiller, fyi I visited a PC World shop (maybe not the same company as UK). Finally bought the Sony in a Virgin store. You have a problem with Sony? Sure the DRM fiasco caused a few red faces but they seem to be past that now.

Jun 30, 07 - 09:14 am Comment from: Awesome Anthony

I have problem with any sony,

Passing junk an making the world tolerate Shit

"Respect to Mr Sony"
The original Sony was cool and Many parts are, They contribute allot,

One Example are B&W;speakers If anyone has heard these, as mac user they are SOOOO Amazing
Sony tries to copy,

PS: Once again, Apple Please come to NZ, kick out Renaissance who some say do a bad job.

Jun 30, 07 - 09:22 am Comment from: Toby Belch

The quality of the English from such posters as 'Awesome Anthonty' and 'Admad' is so appalling that the whole thread seems to be deteriorating into a sort of grammatical drivel.

You Suck! No on like you here, You use to be a PC user Go back to the dark

Jun 30, 07 - 09:47 am Comment from: Admad

I'm not entirely sure what is supposed to be wrong with my English... but I don't wish to enter into any kind of dispute.

The whole point I was trying to make is that Apple care so little for their potential customers that they appear to feel they can sell on the strength of hype alone. I want to TOUCH before I buy. Maybe it's just in the UK, but Apple certainly do not make it easy.

Jun 30, 07 - 09:51 am Comment from: Awesome Anthony

@Admad

Interesting point , That is a Shame if its like that in that in UK, I have aheard a little about that ,

I will check whats up,
Apple Does not Try to sell on hype However,

Jun 30, 07 - 10:17 am Comment from: Toby Belch

Awsome Anthony,

you wrote:
"No on like you here, You use to be a PC user Go back to the dark."
What you meant was:
No one LIKES you here. You USED to be a PC user. Go back INTO the dark.
If someone corrects your miserable English, it doesn't mean they're a PC user, does it? What sort of logic is that?
How old are you?

Jun 30, 07 - 10:37 am Comment from: ../.

Big Al: Hiawatha Bray has, on many occasions, been extremely negative about very good Apple hardware and software. He is also a firm believer in security through obscurity.

Those who have followed Apple news for a long time should remember his trolling articles in mid-90's on "beleguered Apple." Hiawatha Bray is like Dvorak, only less successful at being a dumb troll.

Jun 30, 07 - 10:42 am Comment from: Awesome

just a feeling you where Tony, No problem with you correcting my spelling. Do it Politely

Jun 30, 07 - 11:13 am Comment from: AppleGuy

@Admad

As was stated before, in Apple Retail Stores all of the products are there for you to play with. How can you blame Apple if another retailer does not offer that same feature? Apple wants you to handle their products and try them out. But they only have so much control over the resellers that are not Apple owned.

I'm sorry you were not able to try one out. I think you would have been sold on it.

That's also the effect of hype. It magnifies the buyers remorse that almost everyone feels after a significant purchase. Something about the human condition. There is no way even the most stalwart Apple iPhone supporter can push away all the doubts being seeded for the last 6 months. So when the device failed to <italics>immediately</italics> satisfy, there is the creeping fear that you've made a mistake.

It has, of course, passed.

Jun 30, 07 - 02:50 pm Comment from: newton

Ahmed...the Apple store i visited had about 12 fully functional iPhones to play with! ...and about 15 fully functional iPods of all flavors.

Jun 30, 07 - 03:27 pm Comment from: Woody

@Toby Belch... Have you considered that some of those who comment here may not be native English speakers? Your condescension is far more appalling than their grammatical errors ever could be.

Getting back on topic: It's nice to see someone who couldn't bash the iPhone, no matter how much he wanted to. Of course, we still have to wade through drivel from the likes of Enderle. I'm sure, even after he has seen it, that he will continue to pronounce the iPhone lacking in every conceivable way.

Jun 30, 07 - 09:23 pm Comment from: Caruso

MDN. You guys are complete tools. Someone criticizes anything Apple and you automatically dismiss them as irrelevant and wrong.

Jun 30, 07 - 11:18 pm Comment from: Majikthize

Bray's been fair to Apple in the past. I think the "temptation" s/he described was just a straw man to be knocked down.
