Boxee promises Apple TV patch soon
Thursday, November 20, 2008 - 04:48 PM EST

"Apple last night released an update for the Apple TV, introducing new features but breaking support for the incredibly popular Boxee software - but there will be a fix within 24-hours, a member of the development team has revealed," Jonny Evans reports for Distorted-Loop.

"Swiftly developed in response to Apple’s new software, the new Boxee patch is already undergoing testing, and the Boxee crew will let people know as and when the new version of the software - which should work correctly with the updated model of Apple set-top box - is available. We hope to be able to let you know here," Evans reports.

"Meanwhile, the team is warning Boxee users not to upgrade their Apple TV if they want to continue using the software, which adds a host of handy features to what your Apple TV is capable of," Evans reports.

"Among other handy features, Boxee lets Apple TV users access content from web services outside of the Apple empire, these include Hulu, CBS (online), Comedy Central, Last.fm, and flickr," Evans reports.

Now all we need is a fix for Pith Helmet to go with the new Safari

You notice too!

Apple needs to open an app Store and development tools for the AppleTV. Apple also needs to make a MacMiniTV DWD/DVR unite. Maybe, take some out of the billions being hoarded and buy TiVo.

Is there a hack site where I can download Boxee now to hack my Apple TV?

Don't feel like waiting to get on the alpha testers list.

Nov 20, 08 - 05:15 pm Comment from: Jersey_Trader

Would love to be able to edit these. Could fix that "DWD".

If Apple did buy TiVo and put it's Mac's in all new locations, the Mac OS X would be the dominant PC in every home in the USA in the next 2 to 4 years!

TiVo has a market cap of only $518.2 million. Come on Steve Jobs, pull out a billion out of the bank and do a hostel takeover in the morning!

It's not a "hobby" any more!

When they do ( not if) open an App store for Apple TV they are going to crush gaming. Yes they will still sell a shit ton of consoles , but Apple will kill on hardware sales (Apple TV, controlers, new remotes) and software ( App store). Good night world Apple is on pace to crush everything.

@Jersey_Trader,

That would be awesome, except for the fact that you have to use cable cards with Tivo, and most Cable Co's are switching to SDV, which renders the cable cards useless for most HD stations. I am dumping my DH Tivo for Dish Network. I don't want to, but the cable co DVRs are horrific.

Boxee is nice. I was actually awaiting the weekend to install it, now I'll have to wait a little longer.

All Apple has to do is add Hulu to appletv and be done with this crappy & buggy 3rd party App

"hostel takeover"????

I don't think that Apple wants to deal with all those backpacker hippies.

Nov 21, 08 - 02:31 am Comment from: Growl

Actually, AppleTV comes with built-in support for Flickr. You don't need Boxee for that. I think the author meant to say Picasa.

I've been using ATV Flash. Isn't it about the same as Boxee?

Nov 21, 08 - 08:52 am Comment from: Pith Helmet is working just fine

Wandering Joe & Spark,

I'm using Pith Helmet with the new Safari via Tiger and this site is free of ads. Just a bunch of small
blue question marks. Pith Helmet appears to be working just fine.

How the hell can an unsupported application, a hack, be "wildly popular". I have a funny feeling they're stretching the definition a bit, and that only a tiny minority of Apple TV owners use this thing, even if said tiny minority are wildly happy with it.

For me, no thanks. I don't shell out three figures for an appliance just to f*** around with it. If I want that kind of functionality, I'll purchase something that supports it.

RM - That's why you're the perfect Apple customer - use the product only in the way The Steve says to use it. No modification EVAR!!
