Canada’s Bell tries to take on Rogers and iPhone 3G with iPhone wannabe Samsung Instinct
Thursday, July 03, 2008 - 05:42 PM EST

"The smartphone that has been hailed as 'the iPhone killer' by online pundits is coming to Canada on Aug. 8," Jack Kapica reports for The Globe and Mail Update. "The Samsung Instinct, which has many of the same features as the Apple iPhone, differs from the iPhone in one major way: Its monthly price plan, which will dramatically undercut the iPhone plan announced last week by Rogers Wireless."

MacDailyNews Take: Liar, bad comedian, or ignoramus; take your pick. Here's another major way that Samsung's Instinct differs from Apple's iPhone: the Instinct doesn't even offer Wi-Fi. Yes, folks, you read that right. Now, which "online pundits" hail Samsung's fake iPhone as "the iPhone killer," Jack? Those who were bought and paid for by Samsung and/or whatever carrier couldn't get the iPhone, that's who, Jack. Or those who have not used both devices. A real, independent, as-credible-as-you-can-get review goes like this, Jack: Mossberg reviews Samsung’s Instinct: ‘It’s no iPhone’ - June 12, 2008

Kapica continues, "A subscriber can buy the Instinct for as low as $149.95 and then pay less than $40 a month for a modest voice plan accompanied by an unlimited data plan on Bell's high-speed data network. In contrast, Rogers Wireless's cheapest iPhone plan costs $60 per month, and includes only 400 megabytes of data."

Full article here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers "Shawn P.," Ed," and "Dude" for the heads up.]

MacDailyNews Take: Samsung's Instinct simply cannot hold a candle to Apple's iPhone 3G. It exists not as inspired, original, revolutionary technology, but, rather as a ruse to help iPhone-less carriers attempt to fool the ignorant. Just like all of the rest of the lookalike-not-workalike iPhone wannabes, the Instinct is a joke to those who've experienced Apple's iPhone.

As our own SteveJack wrote back in April: "It's the same old, same old in an iPhone-inspired wrapper... You can judge the distance behind and overall cluelessness of iPhone's future roadkill by the amount they copy the iPhone's exterior... The question I'm left with for [all] of these companies rolling out imitation iPhones this year is: Exactly how stupid do you think your customers are?"

Canada's Bell should have the rights to the iPhone, as well. That will end Rodgers reign of terror!

Jul 03, 08 - 04:56 pm Comment from: Jamie

wow, a choice between a samsung instinct or iPhone 3G...

...choices choices choices wink

Jul 03, 08 - 05:00 pm Comment from: Canusay Conflictofinterest

To answer SteveJack's question - Bell thinks ALL of its customers are COMPLETELY stupid.
And one should not forget that the Globe and Mail is owned by Bell GlobeMedia - this is an ad posing as news - Jack Kapica is hardly a reporter.

Unfortunately for Canadians, there are only two wireless carriers in the country that use GSM technology. Rogers, and the wholly owned (by Rogers) subsidiary, Fido. Telus and Bell use CDMA tech.

We Canadians are skeeeerooo-ed.

Jul 03, 08 - 05:13 pm Comment from: Canadian

This is actually a fantastic thing. No, I'm not saying that the instinct is as good as the iPhone, but it will open Rogers' eyes to the fact that the competition is doing an unlimited data plan an at $10/month. If Rogers doesn't do something quickly, they will have lost out on the biggest opportunity they've had in a long time.

Jul 03, 08 - 05:29 pm Comment from: Big Al

Ted Rogers never saw a dollar he didn't want.

He is too greedy to take advantage of the opportunity that the iPhone brings to Rogers. He could be stealing literally millions of customers from Telus and Bell.

He doesn't see the big picture. He just sees pent up iPhone demand from a few thousand early adopters and he wants to fleece the those poor bastards.

I understand either Telus or Bell or even both are starting the switch to GSM.

It can't happen too soon.

Jul 03, 08 - 05:39 pm Comment from: Dave McKee

in Canada, it's not an issue of iPhone vs Instinct, it's one rate plan vs another and the iPhone loses big. Sure, I want a 3G iPhone but I refuse to pay Rogers' rates. I may get an instinct to with my iTouch and that will have to suffice.

Jul 03, 08 - 05:53 pm Comment from: mac daily news

bitch all you want, i will never buy an iphone in canada, apple should be ashamed with themselves for partnering with gov't sanctioned criminal.

bring it on bell

Jul 03, 08 - 06:00 pm Comment from: Sandy Hum

DO NOT BUY AN iPHONE JULY 11!!!
(Fellow Canadians)

Wait.

Be patient.

If there are no line-ups, hoarding, hoopla and people screaming demands to purchase an iphone -- Rogers will have their tail between their legs.

Just wait a couple of weeks.

The media will pick up on the less than steller demands, as well as business analysts & critics.

Rogers will be totally embarassed. Their stock will drop. The media pressure will be un-bearable.

Jul 03, 08 - 06:18 pm Comment from: Danno Bonano

Good for Bell. I hope it removes the stick Rogers is trying to ream me with.

Competition is good!

Jul 03, 08 - 06:22 pm Comment from: Frank

Well, according to iPodNN, Sweden's
Telia has capitulated to customer pressure. Let's hope Rogers follows when they see no lineups on July 11th.

Jul 03, 08 - 06:30 pm Comment from: PowerPhone

The guy in front of me at Schlotskys' the other day saw me checking my email. "Is that an Instinct?" No, I said. "It looks like one". I said no, the Instinct looks like an iPhone. He then informed me that he was getting I'd as soon as possible.

Now this was a nice kid, very professional, but he believed all the FUD about Apple. No right click, no software, everything backwards.

I told him that it worked seamlessly with my Mac, email, pics and more. I showed him Safari browsing and explained how fast it was on the free Wi-Fi at the hospitol.

Well, his order was ready, so he didn't say too much after that, but he finally stated that "instinct" was a cooler name. I said yes, your phone will have a cool name, mine will have OS X.

Gotcha moment ensued.
He was a real nice guy, though.

The applause Bell is receiving from Apple fans might be confusing to non-Canadians;

The reason this Bell strategy is a good thing for iPhone fans is that the Bell plan further illustrates just how evil is the Rogers iPhone plan, and hopefully it will pressure Rogers to make their iPhone plan more reasonable.
No-one is saying the Instinct is anywhere even near the iPhone, but Rogers' ridiculous rate plan ruins the experience of the iPhone. Want to pay a reasonable rate? Then you don't get all the iPhone's best features.

Up here in the snowy tundra it's not a matter of choosing the Instinct over the iPhone. It's a choice between paying way too much to Rogers in order to get the iPhone, or getting a crappy iPhone lookalike rip-off, with a rate plan that is very attractive.

As stated elsewhere, Rogers has ruined Apple's fantastic product with this dirty greed.

Jul 03, 08 - 07:14 pm Comment from: rogera

I think that you are kind of missing the point here. The point is that AT&T;and its Canadian equivalent are charging up the wazoo for features that are essentially similar. Not the same, but similar. Sure, the iphone has all of that wonderful voicemail, browser and exchange goodness, but for the average consumer, all they may need is what the Instinct provides.

I've had the opportunity to use the Instinct and it is no Iphone, but for the price that it is being sold for, it will definitely compete in Canada. My biggest fear is that Bell may turn Samsung into Microsoft --- Sell a comparative product cheaply and get more market share. I have flashbacks to the end of the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley." When Steve Jobs says, "We're better than you..." and Bill Gates replies something to the effect that "it doesn't matter Steve." Market share was all that mattered.

AT&T;and Rogers have really got to be careful that they do not price the iPhone out of reach of consumers. The Canadian plan is plane ridiculous. The American one is not too far from the same.

For the record, the new AT&T;plan has priced me out of the market for an iPhone. I was really looking forward to it for its email goodness. The ability to have an Exchange account with my personal email accounts on one calendar was really promising. But I cannot justify paying the sums that are being asked for this.

/Rogera.

@MDN

Pretty biased of you to pick a comparison article by "Uncle Walt" titled "...it's no iPhone."

What about the article by John Dvorak titled "Samsung's Instinct: It's no Windows Mobile"? Or the one penned by Jonathan Schwartz titled "Samsung's Instinct: It's no Minitel

I'm not. I'm Canadian. I'll get a phone. I'll get an iPod touch for like $280. Done.

Jul 03, 08 - 08:24 pm Comment from: Jeff

What this does is give iPhone wanters ammunition when we go to the competition board to prove Rogers is abusive.

Jul 03, 08 - 10:13 pm Comment from: AppleJack

That boycott looks like a reasonable idea in Canada.

I wish that that U.S. telecoms and cable companies would learn that lower prices and respect for their customers could make them more money. They don't seem to have learned that you shouldn't go and steal something your customers are trying to give you. . . . For a short while it looked like AT and T had learned that one.
In the meantime, I wish Americans (U.S.) would remember where anti-trust legislation came from.

Jul 03, 08 - 11:48 pm Comment from: Troy

The Samsung wins..........Sorry, the iphone is tied to rogers, and thats like being tied to an anchor.

Jul 04, 08 - 12:58 am Comment from: But Wait...

"Canada's Bell should have the rights to the iPhone, as well. That will end Rodgers reign of terror!"

Except that no iPhone exists that can work in Canada Bell's CDMA network. Steve Jack should have mentioned that.

Even if Canada Bell wanted to go with the iPhone they couldn't. The model they would need just doesn't exist. And with not even a rumour of CDMA iPhones in the works, nor will it likely ever exist.

Canada Bell''s customers can have an Instinct today, or buy an unlocked iPhone and walk around pretending to talk on it.

Jul 04, 08 - 02:41 am Comment from: McDraw

MDN get a clue..are you implying that we should get the iPhone no matter how friggin much it will cost us, even if it's a total massive rip-off by Rogers?

I want to see Canadians line up on July 11.

But not to buy the iPhone from Rogers, but rather to march into their stores with pitch forks and torches and...

Here in Germany the rates asked by T-Mobile are even worse than in the U.S. and almost as bad as those in Canada.

Although I'm a great and long-standing Apple fan and have got a modest amount (but as many as I could afford) of AAPL, I hope that the 11th of July turns out to be a fiasco for Apple in those countries where the rates are high.

Jul 04, 08 - 04:52 am Comment from: petef

what an absolute rip off, I'll keep my iphone anyday

Jul 04, 08 - 07:41 am Comment from: Ian

Unfortunately Bell will sell a lot of phones because Rogers prices are just to out of line with what a consumer expects with the iPhone.

Jul 04, 08 - 10:08 am Comment from: Capitalism

"Unfortunately Bell will sell a lot of phones because Rogers prices are just to out of line with what a consumer expects with the iPhone."

If the Instinct is recognised as a close enough substitute for an iPhone by consumers, And then if capitalism works as it should, Rogers will realize their mistake and lower their prices.

However if the iPhone continues to sell in sufficient quantities despite the high priced contract, capitalism will also be working as it should.

Jul 04, 08 - 10:09 am Comment from: Need iPhone

Well that does it for me and a number of my friends. We were all ready to buy the iPhone but because of the Outrageous Plans and not the devices we are all going with the Samsung device. Thanks Rogers!

Jul 04, 08 - 10:31 am Comment from: David

The Globe and Mail newspaper had a poll that asked what would you rather have: unlimited rates with an Instinct, limited rates with an iPhone, or unlimited rates with an iPhone. Eighty percent chose the Instinct. By now even the idea of buying anything from Rogers is so out of the question that they did not choose the unlimited rates with an iPhone. Rogers has made a mistake, tarnished the image of Apple and reinforced the negative opinion Canadians have of them.

Jul 04, 08 - 10:57 am Comment from: Switcher

IMHO, I would rather see the iPhone pulled from Canada than see it held hostage to the gouging plans of Rogers. I am a Rogers customer now (home phone, cable including HD, internet, and 3 cell phones for the kids) until I can rid myself of all their "services". I am also a a Mac fan (2 imacs and MBP, numerous iPods). For me, seeing Apple allowing their product being used in this manner tarnishes Apple more than Rogers. Allowing some of the highest rates in the world and windfall profits from their customers makes me think less of Apple.

For me it is a choice, an Instinct that I can actually use, or an iPhone that I can't afford to use. Rogers' limited data plans, which are sure to be exceeded, will cost easily $150 per month. Over 3 years that's $5400! On top of that, I would be embarassed to be seen using it and everyone knowing I was suckered into this pricing scheme by Rogers.

I say shame on Rogers, shame on Apple, way to go Bell.

Sorry to say but no iPhone here.

Jul 04, 08 - 11:49 am Comment from: But Wait...

"I would rather see the iPhone pulled from Canada than see it held hostage to the gouging plans of Rogers. "

That's the thing though. In producing only GSM models, Apple has limited provider choice in some countries. Yet if Apple sells even a few phones in those countries it's better off than not selling there. So Apple will try to get better deals where it does have bargaining power, and will fail to do so in single GSM vendor countries like Canada where it has no bargaining power.

Jul 04, 08 - 12:08 pm Comment from: Spock

Although I want an iPhone, I am glad that Bell is offering the Instinct. For those who never plan to travel outside of North America, it might be a viable alternative to the iPhone.

I hope for four things:
1. That people will delay their iPhone purchases so they can embarrass Rogers and rob them of the limelight on July 11.
2. That there will be enough people who buy the Instinct to make a dent in Rogers' sales.
3. That Rogers will change their plans so that they really are what customers are seeking and not the outrageous robbery that they are now.
4. That Elizabeth Hamilton will realize how patronizing it is to tell us that these rates are good for us, even though we are telling her quite loudly and clearly that they are not. Liz, we know what's best for us, not you. Get another job.

Jul 04, 08 - 12:29 pm Comment from: Get real on 'unlimited' data

Whats the point of 'unlimited' data if the instinct doesnt have wifi?

In fact, unlimited data is foolish even with the iPhone - just how much do you think you can use anyway?

My data usage on an iPhone includes Google maps, surfing around, receiving a lot of email.
Average per month is around 50mb.

Thats in Canada for the last 9 months on an unlocked 16gb iPhone on Rogers.

For real surfing, I have a coffee and use free wifi at some cool cafes in Vancouver - so should you!

Jul 04, 08 - 12:45 pm Comment from: MORON ALERT - analysis level lowest ever - ALERT

The level of stupidity here defies reason.

The Instinct is a phone - ok?

The iPhone is an iPod, a mini-computer, and also a phone.

There is NO comparison. NONE. ZILCH.

If you only need a phone get a Razr, an Instinct, or the new phone from Microsoft, the ID-10T model.

Unlimited data doesnt matter because the instinct could only load about 20 mb if you tried to surf the web or get email, non-stop for the whole friggin month.

I have rarely read more STUPID comments here - stop taking the SHEEP pills people, you HAVE reached the lowest point of awareness.
Now you can simply crop the grass and say "Baaaaah".

Most of you guys are too stupid to operate an iPhone anyway, so who cares about Rogers high-ish prices?

Jul 04, 08 - 01:02 pm Comment from: Bill

shhhhh! don't let rogers know we all want the iPhone because it's so much better!

We all want the instinct or telus' HTC touch diamond or whatever! We'll let Rogers know this is what we're going to do because these phones have way better data rates/plans than rogres does for the iPhone. Then when Rogers realises this, they'll change the iPhone plans.

Then we can all go and buy the iPhone! And then go back to making fun of the instinct, etc wink

So MDN, do us canucks a favor and lay low on slamming the options to the iPhone in Canada until we get better iPhone plans and data rates from rogers

thanks!

Jul 04, 08 - 01:14 pm Comment from: 3G

"Whats the point of 'unlimited' data if the instinct doesnt have wifi?"

Because once you get used to 3G speeds, you won't spend too much time looking for wifi hotspots any more.

"Unlimited data doesnt matter because the instinct could only load about 20 mb if you tried to surf the web or get email, non-stop for the whole friggin month."

With EV-DO Rev A, you could do 20MB in about 5 minutes (using real world not higher advertised EV-DO speeds). How can you be so insulting yet so ignorant at the same time?

Jul 04, 08 - 03:32 pm Comment from: msr

No shit the instinct can't hold a candle to the iPhone. Too bad Rogers is raping its customers. I'd buy an instinct over an iPhone if I lived in Canada.

Jul 04, 08 - 06:23 pm Comment from: Jubei

There are a lot of customers tricked by Son of Samsung Extinct commercials. I've heard comments for people seeing the ads at theaters saying "wow, just like the iphone, kinda better with the voice thing for search. iPhone doesn't do that right? Thats really cool".

I swear I heard that. If I were a consumer who has not see both, the Samsprunged ads looks really convincing trumping the iPhone.

Jul 05, 08 - 01:54 am Comment from: TomByron

Lets face it, the value/price ratio is better with InstinctBell than with iPhoneRogers, hell freezes over before I get ripped of by Teddy.

Jul 05, 08 - 07:59 pm Comment from: Blue Dream

I went to the mall the other day and popped my head into a Verizon store and asked the manager to see a Samsung Instinct and the LG Dare.
The manager didn't know either existed. I can't believe Verizon can't inform their managers of what is up and coming to compete with the iPhone. They should at least know about it. The iPhone is going to eat their lunch, especially if the Instinct doesn't have wifi.

Jul 06, 08 - 08:48 am Comment from: Sarasota

Troy - The Samsung wins..........Sorry, the iphone is tied to rogers, and thats like being tied to an anchor.

My exact feeling with AT&T;v. Sprint. The Samsung v2 will probably address many of the initial shortcomings just like Apple attempted with the iPhone G3.

Apple is as much to blame for this fiasco. They allow Rogers to do this to Apple customers.
