Carmack working on iPhone titles, says Apple device more powerful than Nintendo DS, PSP combined
Friday, August 01, 2008 - 05:40 PM EST

"Speaking at QuakeCon 2008 in Dallas this week, id Software co-founder John Carmack praised Apple's iPhone as an emerging force in mobile gaming industry and revealed his firm to be working on two titles for the handset," Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.

"Unlike most mobile platforms where gaming is largely brand-driven due to smaller screens, storage constrains and limited marketing flexibility, the iPhone offers a rare opportunity for game publishers to deliver graphics rich titles supported by detailed textual descriptions on the App Store, he said during a press conference," Marsal reports.

Carmack "said two tentative titles are now well in the works. One was described as a 'conventional mobile game,' while the second was said to be more ambitious in that it will test the limits of the iPhone's graphics capabilities," Marsal reports.

"When it comes to portable gaming systems, the iPhone is 'more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined,' he added. Apple's revenue sharing deal that offers developers 70 percent of the sale price was also cited as a plus," Marsal reports.

iPhone taking over the mobile gaming device scene will mean Sony's out of business in gaming... They'll probably see gradual to sudden down slope in sales when iPhone starts climbing up the sales charts <.<

I have jailbreaked my iphone with software 2.0 and installed the NES simulator, it plays very nice. Also, I am expecting the release of the GENESIS emulator. Those two were working on version 1.4 and below, but only NES was ported to version 2.0.

It's not entirely news, you know, that the iPhone is more powerful than the PSP (the DS, which I love, is about as powerful as a pocket calculator). In particular the iPhone has enough RAM to make full-grown portable game programmers weep with joy.

I thought Carmack said this a couple days ago.

Aug 01, 08 - 05:36 pm Comment from: i want my iTele

It's not as powerful as the teleportation system in my iTele.

Aug 01, 08 - 05:48 pm Comment from: aka Christian

iTele,

Are you familiar with a character called Camel's Milk Drinker?

On topic, my son's twelfth birthday is coming up and we decided to get him an iPod Touch instead of a new console to replace our aging PS2. Infinitely more useful, portable, and the games and other apps are within his purchase range based on his allowance rather than his having to wait until Christmas or another birthday to ask for them.

Aug 01, 08 - 06:14 pm Comment from: Jubei

Lets see what he comes up with. It better be so good that those other crappy " I want to be an iPhone too" can't even touch it.

Aug 01, 08 - 06:17 pm Comment from: CYxodus

@aka Christian

That's a cool idea but don't forget that you can pickup many titles for the DS at $20 and below. Also, there many games for the DS that are exclusives and cool (ex - Mario and Pokemon). Having said that, nice idea.

Wow, just used NetShare for the first time today....

...this platform (iPhone) is ready to explode. If you don't believe me, try downloading BeatMaker...

also, if you REALLY want to be blown away, type VNC into the App Store... god i LOVE this phone!

Aug 01, 08 - 07:08 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Arguably, the only real limitation I see for the iPhone/iPod touch platform is the lack of an SD card slot.

It would be great to be able to load files or apps or music or movies on a 4GB or 8GB card and be able access them. One could see the day when movies/music/games can be delivered/stored/shuffled using SD cards.

Everything else is pretty damn good, especially given that features and functionality can be easily added through firmware updates from Apple, without having to go and buy a new machine/device to get them. The iPhone 2.0 update being the perfect example.

C1,

Remember BustingtheSkullsofIdiots? That guy never let up with his ultra-conservative schtick, but he could lay into the trolls when they pissed him off. Oh, and Tom Cruise, back when he used to hang out here? Ahh, the good old days at MDN.

And, hey, LinuxGuyandMacProdigalSon. You hangin' in there?

I hear Windows Mobile 7 will have the ability to play games too.

1. Cracking iPhones.
2. MobileMe blunders.
3. No resolution independence.
4. Crappy LCDs.
5. Slumping MBA sales.
6. Security patches that don't work.

It just to be "It just works." Now i have to wonder "When will it not suck".

Aug 02, 08 - 02:09 am Comment from: The Other Shoe™

What I have yet to see addressed is the impact iPhone/iPod Touch Game and application development will have on Macintosh OS development.

The many new developers cranking out titles for the iPhone/iPod Touch are using Apple's developer toolset, X-Code, in a modified form and are essentially learning Macintosh Application Development. Additionally, many games developed for the mobile platform could easily or quickly be ported to the Big Screen of roughly 30 million Mac users.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of new firms developing for the Mac in the not too distant future after the gold rush for the iPhone market matures.

I hear Windows Mobile 7 will have the ability to play games too. Once they figure out how Apple does it.

@sbsdbf,

Your glass must always be only half full...

You must appreciate that Microsoft and 100 other companies would LOVE to have the problems you list.

Incidental issues, painful for some of course, but soon to be forgotten in the overall picture of greatness.

Perspective. Denied to the agenda-driven.

Aug 02, 08 - 07:39 am Comment from: JAYGEE

I believe the iPhone/iPod touch is competition for the PSP, but I can't see it making a dent in the DS sales, as the most popular games on the DS are Nintendo made, and I can't see them porting their games over to the Apple touch platforms shut eye

Mario Kart DS on the iPhone/iPod touch would be great LOL

Aug 02, 08 - 08:49 am Comment from: Synthmeister

A $199 iPod touch could easily leave PSP and DS in the dust. Mobile gaming/iPod/e-mail/texting/ all in one.

Apple is simultaneously attacking the
1. mobile gaming
2. mobile computing
3. mobile phone
4. mobile business space.

The next 10 years belong to Apple. I think it will take five years for anyone to begin to compete.

I am still here guys and gals and thanks for your concerns. Let me add that I disagree with the almost automatic dragging in of political issues, because they only split our community and drive the conversation away from the issues that really need to be covered.

Let's keep politics from diverting our focus.

As for my fight against pancreatic cancer, still stage 3, there is some realistic chance of survival. I am not giving up.

Aug 02, 08 - 03:27 pm Comment from: Cubert

LGAMPS,
Glad it's only stage 3 (if that's any consolation).
