CBS launches TV.com app for Apple iPhone and iPod touch; plays full episodes of TV shows
Thursday, February 26, 2009 - 06:00 PM EDT

"CBS is taking the iPhone where no iPhone has gone before," Saul Hansell reports for The New York Times. "Today, it released an iPhone application for its TV.com site that can play full episodes of TV series, ranging from 'C.S.I.' to the original 'Star Trek.' While Hulu, a rival video site owned by NBC and Fox, has kept is content only for computers connected to the Web, CBS has been far more open with its own content."

Hansell reports, "All sorts of video have been on the iPhone from the beginning... but the TV.com application appears to be the first with a lot of mainstream network content that can access full episodes over both the cellular network and Wi-Fi. My test of watching Spock confront a strange cube-like object in space was perfectly acceptable in quality while I was riding on the bus in New Jersey."

"I wouldn’t be surprised if the TV.com service finds an audience, particularly if CBS can promote it widely. I think this is an important and provocative development," Hansell reports. "Pressure will also be applied to NBC, Fox and ABC if the CBS programming becomes popular on the iPhone. As much as the networks are afraid of losing control of their distribution and cutting out their affiliate stations, they are equally afraid of falling behind rivals and losing potential audience."

Was it the G4 Cube or the NeXT Cube?

Peace.
Olmecmystic cool smile

Feb 26, 09 - 07:09 pm Comment from: If it's got

commercials, forget it. I can find the content on my own without the advertising and watch it on my iPhone.

Feb 26, 09 - 07:26 pm Comment from: Jubei

This is a good thing. The iPhone can be the one device that can do it all. Even TV. Why not?

Feb 26, 09 - 07:43 pm Comment from: nekogami13

Only full episodes I see are cnet crap, star trek and macgyver, everything else is just 2 minute or less clips.

Video looks pretty good, loads up pretty quick on 3g.

Olmecmystic,
In other words, father or son?

The prodigal son will come home some day.

Bold move CBS. What does this do to Sprint TV?

Feb 26, 09 - 08:06 pm Comment from: Toasty

This app is confusing and misleading. you click on shows that say full episode and then you have to add it to your "feed." Then when you go to your feed, all you get a youtube clips that are a few minutes log at best. This application kinda sucks. Who wants to only watch 54 seconds of a scene?

Feb 26, 09 - 08:08 pm Comment from: eMax

the full episodes are broken up into multiple parts.. lame.

and what is with the youtube search results? to pretend there is more content then there really is?

cmon where is the cbs.com streaming primetime shows?

This is the same garbage CBS feeds to googlevideo

Feb 26, 09 - 08:17 pm Comment from: GranitW

Just downloaded and can't find these "Full Episodes", all it has is small 00:30 to 2:00 minutes clips of shows.

Feb 26, 09 - 08:26 pm Comment from: R2

I figured it was too good to be true.

MDN should edit that ridiculous headline.

Feb 26, 09 - 08:37 pm Comment from: Scarbro

Will it work in Canada?

Feb 26, 09 - 08:46 pm Comment from: R

"CBS is taking the iPhone where no iPhone has gone before,"...

Actually, there are many apps out there that are half baked, not well thought out, and frustrating for the user to use... so, naw, they haven't taken it where it hasn't gone before.

Full episodes in a series of clips? I'm assuming there's a reason for this, but it makes me not want to bother with the whole thing... I'd rather have one clip that's the full show that can save and pick up where I left off and/or be able to add bookmarks to.

And, ugh, those "snack" clips, is there really a demand for short clips of TV shows? I assume what it's supposed to be is just a commercial so you can get a taste of a show, then go home and tune in later to the full show... but what it really is is a let down when you see a show you want to watch in the list and you find out it's just a "snack" clip. "Psych!"

It's cool that they're at least going for it and trying to put TV on the iPhone, but, as usual, limitations and clunkiness get in the way of a fun and satisfying user experience. I'm always surprised when these companies have a chance to make an incredible splash right out of the gate, but instead they just come out strolling... "Hey everyone! We finally got a TV program that you've all been waiting for... It includes 5 full shows broken up into a series of clips and a bunch of other short previews! Isn't it exciting!!!" Answer: "Um,no."

Wow! OMG! Tremendous! Fantastic! Stupendous! World-shaking! Life-changing!

...oh wait...I was thinking of something else. Sorry.

Feb 26, 09 - 09:32 pm Comment from: Wish I Was Here

In it's current state, this app sucks. Why would I want to watch 2 minute clips of a show? I want to watch THE SHOW.

Feb 26, 09 - 09:58 pm Comment from: static

Pressure will also be applied to NBC, Fox and ABC if the CBS programming becomes popular on the iPhone.

Kind of the same MS felt pressure to launch the Zune?

These networks have aired almost nothing worth watching for 20 years. And they wonder why viewership has plummeted...

Feb 26, 09 - 10:04 pm Comment from: TowerTone

How 'bout that Stevie Wonder on PBS?
Now that was good television.

Feb 26, 09 - 10:11 pm Comment from: welfaremike

what a joke. clips do nothing. I'd use this constantly if I could watch the full show WITH ADS if it was like Hulu, where it's a 30 second ad every commercial break. Ads don't bother me...clips, however, do.

Feb 26, 09 - 10:35 pm Comment from: KenC

Incremental. This step isn't the last one, but it's still a step forward and we should applaud them. I mean people blast Apple all the time, but that's because they don't know the history of what came before. Classic examples are people blasting Apple for DRM, not knowing that Apple played an integral role in the elimination of DRM; or people blasting the iPhone being only on AT&T;, not realizing that the iPhone would have never raised the bar that it did if it did not give a carrier an exclusive. So, before hammering CBS, just remember, this is just a first step before full episodes are available.

@R: I think MacGyver was a ABC show. So that would be a nooooo.

Feb 27, 09 - 07:44 am Comment from: R

Um, but I just did. It broadcast on ABC, but who owns it now? Ugh, check the app first. Was I hallucinating?

Feb 27, 09 - 11:45 am Comment from: John B

Is Hulu available for iPhone? I can't find anything about it in the app store. I've been debating getting an iPod Touch, and if I could watch real TV shows on it (for free), that would seal the deal for me. That and double the memory for the same price.

Feb 27, 09 - 02:43 pm Comment from: Mymac4ever

Im still waiting for tv-shows and movies on the european stores. When will we get the same content as US, when hell freezes over? Still cant understand why I cant even download a free app without an account

Feb 27, 09 - 11:49 pm Comment from: db

<sighs>

As usual CBS and other short-sighted companies ignore the windfall that opening these things to outside markets would do for them, financially.

It's almost surprising that we can buy box sets of TV shows up here in Canada. Hulu and US networks shut us out. I need to go to YouTube to see Superbowl commercials because of simulcasting. I'm lucky to be able to get a few of the shows online through Global, CTV or Space. Some air months after the US date, and at that point, what's the fun in discussing it with others online?

I was all set to go and pick up the CBS app now (even though there is a limited amount of shows that were good on CBS, and I already own the whole Macgyver series on DVD).

I guess that's the way to stimulate the US economy -- to restrict the amount of customers that can buy a product!
