Funny how first thoughts related to Manhattan are being mugged in the street... Not many are aware that New York City dropped off the top 50 cities in the US by crime rate (quite some time ago, actually, and hasn't re-appeared on that list since). Incidentally, higher on that list are places such as Omaha, Nebraska; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Tucson, Arizona; Fresno, California... And you don't hear stories about street mugging in Omaha, do you...?

As for the wifi 'cloud' over midtown Manhattan, nice going; although, to put it in prespective, this 20-block coverage will do little for vast majority of people who live and/or work elsewhere. If they could have only extended it just three blocks north (i.e. into the Central Park), it would have made a difference to many, if nothing, at least on weekends.

Still, it's nice to know it's there. Most Broadway theatres are in the coverage zone, as well as some well-known landmarks (Rockefeller Centre, Carnegie Hall, etc).

Sweet. This is great news for iPhone-toting tourists who visit the area.

Lived in NYC for 12 Years. Never felt safer on the street, anywhere. Even at 4 in the morning.

Just visited Manhattan for the first time over the last two days for a business trip. The experience definitely took any preconceived notion I had of NYC and threw it out the window. Stayed in Times Square, took the 2/3 subway, frequented a few bars. Great people; great culture. Can't wait to go back on more personal terms.

A city of 8.02 million and a metro area of over 20 million. Amazing place I love it here [and I speak as a Brit].

although this free service only extends up to Central Park South, there is free wi-fi access in Central Park itself provided by the city of new york, and in a lot of public parks as well.

As for Manharttan Wi-Fi, Bryant Park (behind the Public Library @ 42nd & 6th Ave) has it. Supposedly Central Park has quite a bit of coverage. I live a block from the park, but would rather ride laps on my bike than lug my MacBook Pro with me.

There really ARE times when I'd rather NOT be staring at one type of screen or another. NO bike computer or GPS! Maps (and compass) work fine, thanks.

Why does NYC get such a bad rap? There were all those dystopic crime movies in the 70's and 80's, when it really WAS nasty and scary, but now that it's been Disney-fied and Mall-ified, it's amazingly safe. I worry more about getting run down by cabs or Jersey drivers than crime.

As a transplanted suburban Bostonian who escaped LONG ago, I'd NEVER go back and live in some provincial little town. When I think of all the money I'd have wasted over the years owning cars... I'm SO glad I spent it traveling to cool and exotic places rather than sitting in traffic.
