Channel checks show iPod nano outselling iPod touch, iPhones selling well
Thursday, November 29, 2007 - 12:41 PM EST

"After surveying 90 Apple stores and 18 Best Buy locations over the Thanksgiving weekend, analysts for ThinkEquity Partners LLC concluded that despite a high level of interest in the new iPod Touch among shoppers, the more affordable iPod Nano remains the clear winning at the cash register," AppleInsider reports.

"'Our channel checks indicate that of all the iPods, the Touch piqued the most interest from customers,' analyst Darren Aftahi wrote in a research report to clients this week," AppleInsider reports. "'However, our conversations do not lead us to the conclusion that 'level of interest' translated into consumer purchases of iPod Touch.'"

"'Also, a lot of consumers seemed to opt for iPhones over iPod Touch because iPhones facilitate all that iPod can do (and more), but the opposite is not true,' the analyst further advised clients," AppleInsider reports. "Based on his checks, Aftahi believes that iPhones are selling well, perhaps well enough to best his 3.2 million quarterly estimate come the close of Apple's first fiscal quarter of 2008 in late December."

MacDailyNews Take: Unsurprisingly, Apple's product differentiation strategies seem to be working as planned.

Perhaps the numbers would be different in place where there is no iPhone available?

Love my new Touch, but not before I fixed it. While it doesn't make phone calls it does everything else!

What is a different number?

I thought all numbers were the same!

They are just numbers!!!

Nov 29, 07 - 12:56 pm Comment from: Realist

I rest my case.

iPhone display: great.
iPod Touch display: not so great.

How can that be?

Soon an announcement Touch's display is as great as iPhone's display.

Result: all those with the inferior, Gen 1 Touch, have to have the better screen, fork over another few hundred bucks... Steve's fortune and reputation as the greatest businessman in the world grows and grows.

Now, tell me I'm not wrong.

Wow, cheaper nano outsells more expensive iPod Touch . . . someone give that reporter the raise they deserve . . .

iPod Touch and iPod Nano are at two different price points with features sutied for each price point.

Newsflash - Toyota outsells BMW

They'er both high quality products, but Toyota is a lot more affordable then BMW, hence the higher sales.

Congrats to Apple for realizing that not all consumers are the one and the same and for offering differing products to meat those needs.

Nov 29, 07 - 01:08 pm Comment from: Parnm

I don't get it. I have a touch. It's amazing. I haven't seen an iPhone screen, but the touch screen is fantastic.

Nov 29, 07 - 01:12 pm Comment from: ken1w

It's no wonder the iPod nano is selling well. That tiny screen is amazingly sharp. I won't watch a two-hour movie on it, but a 30-minute TV-show (about 22 minutes minus commercials) is enjoyable. Once you pick one up and play with it at the Apple Store, its hard not to buy one.

Nov 29, 07 - 01:12 pm Comment from: Pete

Cheaper MacBooks and Nanos outselling everything else Apple makes.

Why doesn't this surprise me?

Now if Apple made a iPudTouch and sold it for $999 it would outsell both the MacBook and the Nanos.

"offering differing products to meat those needs."
Those poor needs, do they have to die?
sorry Kevin, I couldn't resist.

In other news,
despite the better quality of BMW's, they are still outsold by Ford.
And Hershey's candy bars still outsell both Ford's and BMW's combined!

Nov 29, 07 - 02:15 pm Comment from: ragarcia

All this after everybody critiqued the nano as being "fat" even before it came out?

Nov 29, 07 - 02:43 pm Comment from: Jubei

Thats fine as long as its not a Zune they are buying. Any iPod sold is one less Zune, think "PAYOLA" device sold.

Nov 29, 07 - 03:38 pm Comment from: M@c

I just got back into town after many months away (and I didn't check into MDN while I was gone...oops) and I notice the stars next to people's screen names.

What's that all about?

Which fits in a stocking the best, a nano or the huge iPhone box?? Which has colors, that appeals to kids?? Which is tiny, concealed, and armband carryable?
Which is cutesy?
There's your answer as to why nanos are outselling the rest. It is the perfect stocking stuffer. I pity iTunes users on Christmas day.

Nov 29, 07 - 06:17 pm Comment from: LorD1776

If you have a big enough stocking a Mac Pro and 30" monitor can be stocking stuffers. You could shove a St. Bernard in my stocking. Ya just gotta use yer noodle. Uh oh, the "shove" comment probably wasn't very wise.

Nov 29, 07 - 10:43 pm Comment from: Huck

Are there genuinely easy-to-follow, step-by-step directions available for making one's newly purchased iPod touch be able to handle Mail, Weather, Maps, Notes (and, if all this still requires downgrading the firmware, the addition of Calendar events)?

If it's not unmanageably complicated, basically I'll just get one and do it. And I wish someone would make a fake iChat client that looks just like the SMS application on the iPhone. But is for iChat, hence free. Is there such a beast?

Nov 29, 07 - 11:20 pm Comment from: GizmoDan

iTouch is crippled. So I bought a Nano.

When they put the features back in the iTouch that the iPhone has (except the phone, that I don't want to pay for monthly, since I get a phone free from work), then I will sell my Nano and buy an iTouch.

Don't just promise the moon. Deliver it. (Apple can!)

Amazing revelation! The iPods are the top seller at the Apple store! Why not look at Amazon and Best Buy's web sites and sort by best sellers for both flash and hard drive MP3 players and see Apple is losing the battle outside the Applehead shop. In Flash memory players Sandisk has 4 of the top 5 slots and Creative is in there as well with iPod Nano 2 gb at #6. Look at hard drive players and Zune 30 (a year old product) has three of the top 4 slots with iPod 30 gb classic at #3. As soon as Zune 80 is in stock in a week watch it move up and replace Apple on hard drive players. And don't tell me it's just cause the price ot non-Apple products are lower. Read the consumer reviews. Non-Apple products are 3.5 to 4 stars while Apple is 4 stars so customers are liking what they are buying. The 7 year Apple domination in MP3 players has been great but all good things come to an end and the 70-80% market share is going to go to 50% or lower after Christmas and Apple's stock will follow soon after. Sell now, lock in your profits and buy Apple stock back at $150!

These are not stars, but the open sphincter symbol which indicates that the poster is open to solicitations for unnatural acts.

Reality checker isn't checking much.

amazon has placed iPods in a separate category. you won't find them by searching for MP3. So no wonder the sanscrap and stuff top the list.

MDN Magic word : Needed , Like checker's reality

Nov 30, 07 - 09:24 am Comment from: therepguy

I still say that the iPod Touch needs to be both a iPod and a full featured "Newton" type PDA... then that so called "high level of interest" will turn into equally high sells... there are some out there who need and want only a PDA/iPod with 16 GB or better @ $299.00 or less?

The days of a good PDA are far from over...

Nov 30, 07 - 09:48 am Comment from: Reality Checker

Wrong @Altos!

MP3 players is the category on Amazon containing ALL MP3 players including Apple and others. There are sub categories for flash and hard drive players. iPod is not a sub-category by itself under MP3 players. If you search for iPod of course all you see is Apple just like all you get in the Apple store is Apple. Remove your head from Apple's orifice, open your eyes and see the bigger picture. Competitive MP3 players are gaining in popularity at a much accelerated pace. Many people (except you brainwashed Appleheads) are ready for a fresh change away from the tired, over-priced, over-hyped and overexposed iPods. Take the Sansa Clip 1 gb for instance. It is less than half the price as the iPod shuffle, has a small LCD display to at least show you the name of the song, an FM radio for listening at the gym, almost 3X the battery life and a voice recorder. Let's revisit this conversation after Christmas and the share of market numbers come in.

Nov 30, 07 - 02:42 pm Comment from: Altos

8/10 best sellers are iPods as of November 30th 2:33PM EST.
(that's updated hourly which makes a one shot snapshot meaningless for intrinsic product value).

Here daring to link a reference to my claims (where's yours) :
http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/172630/ref=pd_ts_e_nav

BTW, if you search for MP3 player on amazon.com no iPods come out.

Why anybody would buy an iPod online anywhere other than the Apple store beats me, but still iPods rule (amazon hourly best seller list not withstanding)

No amount of wishful thinking or fortuitous best seller list on a web site is gonna change the iPod's true selling statistics RC, don't set yourself up for post-christmas depression.

Nov 30, 07 - 05:55 pm Comment from: Reality Checker

@Altos!

OOOH a URL link, that's pretty out there and daring! Right up there with bungee jumping and skydiving! I didn't think people actually needed a link to know how to look things up themselves on Amazon or other websites for that matter.

So which is it? Last time you said iPod was in a separate category by itself, now a different story. Since you like links so much here are two for you:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/15752081/ref=pd_ts_e_nav

In flash memory players iPod is #5 behind three Sandisk and one Creative player. As a matter of fact Apple has only 3 of the top 20 slots in flash players.

Here are the hard drive only player rankings:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/15752041/ref=pd_ts_e_nav

Zune has top two places for hard drive players. For overall MP3 players yes your link shows Apple in the lead so what is the conclusion here? Guess we can't say for sure until after the holidays and all the dust settles! Will I be depressed if Apple's market share doesn't go down after Christmas? No. You see I am not an Apple hater! Just not enamored with them like most others on here. I'm on my third Mac computer and have two iPods. I also use PCs, I find both to be good. Will my next MP3 player be an iPod, maybe, maybe not. See I don't just blindly buy Apple to be a member of the counterculture cult. Actually iPod owners are the mainstream. A Zune etched with artwork from one of the artists is way more unique, cool and counterculture than the 75% of the people carrying around an iPod.

In case you missed the news flash Zune has been selling very well on eBay and Amazon, leading iPod at times. Another link for ya:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?qp=crootcategoryid##-1##-1~~q70726f63657373696e6774696d653a3e313930302d30312d3031~~cabcat0200000##0##uh~~cabcat0201000##0##2a~~ncabcat0201011##0##1&usc=abcat0200000&nrp=15&type=category&lcn=All+iPod+&+MP3+Players&sp;=-bestsellingsort+skuid&id=abcat0201011

At Best Buy the Zune 80 (that is not even available for 2 weeks) is selling at #5 and yes Apple is leading. But watch Zune zoom after they are in stock in a few days.

Did I say Apple would be outsold by others? No I did not. I said that other competitive players are selling very well and will steal significant market share from Apple shortly. The problem with being on top of the mountain, for Apple or an other entity for that matter, is all directions lead downhill.

Of course all these hourly rankings are meaningless in the grand scheme of things. What matters is final sales. Apple's livelihood is very dependent on iPods, Microsoft's is not. Will Apple sell a lot this Christmas? Of course! Why would they not? My point is their heir supreme is beginning to fade. Stay in denial if you want to but as Dylan says, The times, they are a changin'!!!!

Have a Merry Christmas Altos!

One man's reality is another man's psychosis.

Dec 01, 07 - 03:58 am Comment from: Real World

It's pretty clear that Apple is no longer the king of HDD based players and that crown has been handed to Microsoft. That's what you get for never significantly updating your product line.

Dec 05, 07 - 02:40 pm Comment from: Able Archer

@Reality Checker: And just the same as hourly figures are pretty much meaningless so are short term figures. iPods may temporarily lose ground (an inch mind you not a yard) but will regain it when most users of the other junk players (not all but most) give in and go back to iPod/Apple when their Zunes/iWannabees either die or there frustration level rises above their level of tolerance for mediocrity.

Unlike buying a MS product people don't keep buying an iPod or Mac because it's sexy. They keep coming back because it does what it's supposed to do and does it in a way that makes sense (and isn't in a form factor that only a tasteless geek could love). Only a masochist would feel comfortable with the Zune's idiotic menu/control scheme. And while I'm sure you don't believe it, MS is losing influence everyday. That means that the days of buying MS "just because" are rapidly coming to a close. MS represents everything that is "good enough" for those who don't know. They were great when there was NO competition. If you believe that MS knows how to compete on anything that resembles a level playing field then you need to pop an aspirin and hope the effects of the stroke are reversible. If you think the masses are going to buy the Zune once they stop selling it a loss you're nuts. No (in serious numbers) one is doing it now. Yet, people are willing to pay full price for an iAnything. There is a reason for that. And it isn't looks. The Mac/iPod/iPhone provides an experience that is closest to television and radio in that most of the time you don't notice the device only the task at hand. People are catching on to that and to the fact that the poor interface designs of the "PC/Windows" industry as a rule force them to think about things that should be invisible most of the time.

The only reason for any sustained loss in the future will be due to the category becoming just another commodity item. At which point Apple will exit the market having moved on to the next big thing under the radar of their competitors.
