Charlie Rose face plants to save his Apple MacBook Air
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 - 04:43 PM EST

"Yeah, you read that headline right. Apple couldn’t pay for better press than this," Michael Arrington reports for TechCrunch.

"Viewers of the Charlie Rose show tonight were stunned to see the normally composed Rose looking like he’d just been in a bar fight. He has a very bad black eye and a bandage over part of his forehead. I contacted the show’s producers to hear what happened. Earlier today, they said, Rose tripped in a pothole while walking on 59th Street in Manhattan. He was carrying a newly purchased MacBook Air and made a quick (but ultimately flawed) decision while falling: sacrifice the face, protect the computer," Arrington reports.

"Luckily the MacBook Air survived the fall," Arrington reports.

That's what I like...a man who has his priorities straight!

Mar 18, 08 - 03:51 pm Comment from: Ironic

I was truly surprised to read this story, since Mr. Rose frequently introduces Bill Gates on his program as his dear friend.

Mar 18, 08 - 03:53 pm Comment from: speedyg

I think his wife beats him and this is just a good cover story

Mar 18, 08 - 03:54 pm Comment from: sly

Maybe Gates uses a MacBook Air in secret??

Mar 18, 08 - 03:54 pm Comment from: drbyers

slow news night...

Mar 18, 08 - 03:56 pm Comment from: HMCIV

Ironically, the MacBook Air is equiped to handle these sorts of bumps and bruises. If anyone happens to have been walking by w/ a camera at the time, PLEASE post on YouTube!!

"Yeah, you read that headline right. Apple couldn’t pay for better press than this," Michael Arrington reports for TechCrunch."

Ummm, wouldn't it be great press if Charlie actually told his audience, on air, why he looked like that. Unless I missed something, Arrington had to call the show to find out why Charlie looked like he was in a bar fight.

So where's the great press in that? A few people who read Arrington or MDN will know, but most of Charlie's viewers will never know the story, so Apple's not getting any great press over that.

Mar 18, 08 - 04:03 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Just another Jeff

Arrington's audience in much larger in his mind.

Mar 18, 08 - 04:09 pm Comment from: CheekyGit

I nominate Charlie Rose for the Medal for Honor for Valor for his heroic sacrifice of his face to protect his beloved MB Air.

His courageousness directs great credit upon himself, Apple and all Mac lovers everywhere.

Mar 18, 08 - 04:12 pm Comment from: Nit Pick @ Cheeky

Er, sorry that 'courageousness' of which you speak is more likely plain old courage.

Slap on the wrist.

@ Nit Pick

Good lord, man...woman,,,whatever. You couldn't recognize that as satire?

For that, you need a good old-fashioned slap upside the head.

Mar 18, 08 - 04:18 pm Comment from: TowerTone

And, oddly enough, the pavement kept asking him "What's the frequency, Kenneth?"

Mar 18, 08 - 04:20 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Actually, PBS just told him to hit the road.....

An Apple a day does NOT keep the doctor away.

Mar 18, 08 - 04:25 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Had he died, the Macbook would have been Air to his fortune.

Wasn't that Dan Rather?

And, uh, it looks like you're on a roll.

Mar 18, 08 - 04:29 pm Comment from: Hentercenter

yeah this story is pretty funny and ... in a way.... really weird... not sure id do the same. probably try to make a split second decision to hold the MBA in one hand and brace myself a bit with he other.

on a side note,
has anyone else noticed how in every article there's always a few people who always comment on everything (not that it's a bad thing)? The really dedicated MDN people such as Towertone, ChrissyOne, and Ampar (who has yet to comment this article) and then there are a bunch of other people who only comment every once in a while (such as myself)?

Mar 18, 08 - 04:30 pm Comment from: CheekyGit

Someone give TT a nudge. I think he's stuck.

Mar 18, 08 - 04:31 pm Comment from: TowerTone

One would assume that "newly purchased" MacBook Air was either in its original box or in a laptop bag. Either would have protected his new Air. Additionally, the Buyers Protection offered by premium credit cards would have covered him. But all that is a lot to mull over as you and your Precious are about to hit the pavement.

TowerTone

's alright. i have missed reading your views on everything here. I like reading your's and Chrissy's and Ampar's thoughts. You guys have more sense here than anyone else...

Mar 18, 08 - 04:40 pm Comment from: TowerTone

that was supposed to be "Air to his misfortune".

Dammit!

Mar 18, 08 - 04:41 pm Comment from: HotinPlaya

He probably had it out, and was tossing it around , hand to hand, showing off how light it is

Charlie Rose face plants to save his Apple MacBook Air.

Would it read better as, 'Charlie Rose plants face to save his Apple MacBook Air'?

Mar 18, 08 - 04:48 pm Comment from: Spark

@TT-- Good run... not only quantity, but quality as well!

@Charlie Rose -- I may now have to watch your show once or twice out of sympathy, gratitude, or some such misplaced sentiment.

Mar 18, 08 - 04:52 pm Comment from: Jubei

Thats awesome. If I had a DELL, HP, Gateway... or specially a Zune, they land first. In fact, I'll use it somehow to shield me from the pavement. grin

Don't use the Zune! That brick will hurt the pavement! You might create another pot hole!

Mar 18, 08 - 05:07 pm Comment from: Gandalf

Sign of a slow brain, but not a mid-western brain.

First instinct: hand in front of face.

Second: I just spent $2000+ on this

Third (not connected): is my face worth more than $2000?

No offense, all in jest, except the middle bit.

Mar 18, 08 - 05:10 pm Comment from: paddywack

I think Bill Gates threw the Zune at Charlie and he is no longer a dear friend.

Walking down Manhattan streets with a (presumably) bare MacBook Air??? That's asking for trouble...

I refuse to comment on this.

"One would assume that "newly purchased" MacBook Air was either in its original box or in a laptop bag. Either would have protected his new Air."

Which makes his action stupid. Which just strengthens the commonly held belief that Mac users are retards. This is good advertising how?

Many years ago, a friend who was into Judo convinced a group of us to give it a try. We all went down to the dojo and practiced osoto-gari for an hour. I never took another judo lesson but I have also never taken another uncontrolled fall. Clearly, Charlie needs an hour or so of judo training.

As far as protecting the MBA for financial considerations, I doubt it. Charlie Rose makes so much money that he could buy a MBA with the money he earns in the time it takes him to fart. I think he protected the MBA out of his appreciation for beauty and style.

Mar 18, 08 - 06:31 pm Comment from: Olmecmystic

I'm a regular viewer of the Charlie Rose Show on PBS and saw him last night. He did NOT offer any explanation of why he looked like that.

He very professionally conducted an in-depth interview with Robin Wright of the Washington Post about her new book on Iran as if nothing was wrong. Since he did, she did too.

Never would've guessed that a MacBook Air was to blame. Never would've guessed that he was the technophile that he is. With an iPhone, why does he still need the other two? Come on, Charlie! Make the leap!

Peace.

P.S. Que up Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust". wink

Been there, done that...

Christmas Eve morning 1996 walking across snow covered ice parking lot with a laptop in one hand, hard drive in a case in the other... Hit a slick patch and had about 1/10th of a second to realize I was going down and I had enough time to lift up the bags I was carrying. I neglected to get my left knee out from under me and I tore it up pretty bad. But no damage to my PowerBook or HD.

The sacrifices we all make.

Now of course, if it had been a Windows machine, I'd of said "Let it crash!"!

@TT...are you posting from a Starbucks after having a triple expresso?

Good comments though I hope you will be able to sleep tonight.
