Chicago Tribune: Verizon’s fake Apple iPhone, the LG Voyager, is clunky and second-rate
Tuesday, December 18, 2007 - 05:12 PM EST

"Verizon's iPhone clone, the Voyager, was released last month to a lot less fanfare than Apple's iPhone debut earlier this year," Eric Benderoff reports for The Chicago Tribune.

"Made by LG Electronics, the Voyager uses touch-screen controls for navigation, but they are not integral to the operation of the phone, as on the iPhone," Benderoff reports.

MacDailyNews Take: LG is the former "Lucky GoldStar," as it was known in the United States before rebranding to "LG." In other words: for years, they made some of the world's worst craptronics; so bad, in fact, that they had to change their name.

Benderoff continues, "In terms of dimensions, the Voyager is twice as thick as the iPhone and not as wide, so the Voyager's exterior screen, decent at nearly 3 inches measured diagonally, lacks the impact of the iPhone's 3 1/2-inch screen."

"The user interface on Apple's mobile phone was revolutionary in its approach. With the swipe of a finger, an application opens, you type a message, dial the phone or scroll through album covers to find the song you want. It works simply and is quite intuitive," Benderoff reports. "On the Voyager, the interface uses touch controls on the front cover only and really just to open an application. Use photos as an example: On the iPhone, when you look at family photos, you flick to the next one with a finger. Then, by using two fingers as if they were tweezers, you can enlarge or shrink a photo. Lots of fun. On the Voyager, you tap on a photo to open it. That's it. You can't manipulate the image at all. You can tap an arrow key to move forward or backward, which is nice and better than on most phones, but it doesn't compare with the fun one has with the iPhone."

"The Voyager is actually a touch version of another LG phone, the enV, which was introduced last year to pretty solid reviews. All LG did with the Voyager is add a new cover to the phone, one with touch-screen tools and bigger internal and external screens," Benderoff reports.

"As a music player, the Voyager does not compare to the iPhone, or many other music phones, for that matter. It uses Verizon's Vcast music service, a clunky program in every way compared with iTunes," Benderoff reports.

Full article, in which Benderoff calls Voyager "second-rate" compared to the iPhone (a very generous characterization), here.

MacDailyNews Take: That some foolhardy souls will carry around these old phones with their bolted-on bogus iPhone screen that does nothing with touch besides launch apps is positively Zunish.

Sometimes the more honorable course open to a reluctant competitor is to just capitulate, and say, "Okay, we admit it. We suck."

Every other alternative is pain deferred. For both Buyer and Seller.

It's okay - just admit it - you suck.

Dec 18, 07 - 06:26 pm Comment from: eMax

Answer me this...... your questions are stupid...

why didnt the HiFi sell well? who cares, every single apple product does not need to be the #1 selling product in the world, nor does it even have to be the best in its own category.

OSX debuted in 2001 well after Windows had the market. Just because OSX is better doesn't mean everyone is going to just switch the next day. And just because something is better on the market doesn't mean everyone is going to buy it.

Look at Blu Ray and HDDVD either one provides HD video playback, thats all that the end user will see, however many other things will play into their market share, directly speaking about which movies they can buy on either format, and prices. Just because HDDVD might be the better format for data storage and movie playback doesn't mean it will be the market leader, and the same goes the other way with blu ray.

your questions are overly obnoxious.... you might as well ask, why doesnt Steve jobs build a time machine and go back in time to kill bill gates and take over the computer industry?

Dec 18, 07 - 06:30 pm Comment from: Denny Crane

Hey... "Answer Me These Troll"

Just because you ask a question doesn't make it, or you, valid.

Your last question pretty much does the job of discrediting you perfectly. Not much more I need to say.

Dec 18, 07 - 06:31 pm Comment from: smackman

Let me see if I can answer some of these.

But it is the Number One phone and the iPhone is not, why is that? Not sure where you are getting this data.

Why is Windows the Number One selling OS and Mac OS X is not? Windows in some contries, like Japan, is NOT the #1 selling OS at the moment. Momentum is changing.

If the 1st generation iPod was so perfect, why did Apple have to come out with cheap, low capacity iPods? No one said that ANY of Apple's product is perfect. Lower capacity just makes it easier to get into the iPod.

Why didn't the iPod Hi-Fi sell? Because is sounds like total ass! Really the worst Apple product im my opinion.

Why does cheap crap sell well? Because this is America. We are all about the cheap. The majority of us value the dollar more than the product somtimes. That is also a MS metality. One that Apple is doing great things to change.

Are some people born with a gene lacking the ability to judge quality and value?, why? Does it explain PC users? No not really. Again see the above comment. This is a cultural thing that Apple is up against.

Why did Apple come out with annoying glossy only screens which over 85% people dislike? Dude, you got me on that one. I have no idea either.

Why did OS X 10.5 get released with so many bugs? Define so many. Have you TRIED vista lately?

Why doesn't OS X.5 work properly in the Apple Stores? Seems to be working fine at mine.

Why is there so many security issues with OS X when for years OS 9 was nearly perfectly secure? OS9 was NOT perfectly secure. In fact, any of you guy/gals remember the kernal panic bug for OS9?

Why did Apple adopt Intel's and Microsoft's (The "Evil Wintel Alliance") privacy intrusive EFI? Explain this please.

Why did some early Intel Mac's have the TPM chip and now they don't? Don't know.

Why didn't Apple adopt BlueRay drives in all their machines yet? I am sure they are waiting to see which format is going to be more popular. But then again...aren't we all?

Why did Apple hobble iMovie, charging users for a upgrade and then taking features away? Dude, simple. They wanted to take a new direction with it. Plus, they perposly did not overwrite the old iMovie so people who are still wanting to use it can.

Why doesn't Apple offer more computer hardware options? A upgradable iMac? I'm getting really tired of this opinion. They more hardware they have to support the more kaos it invites. It is the Apple way. Love it or hate it.

Why can't one build a Mac? Why can't one buy exactly the specs they need? See above comment.

Why does Apple hate the gaming market? Explain this.

Why didn't Apple adopt the Cell processor? Especially for graphics? The answer to this is in the success they are having now.

Why is Sony products in the Apple Stores and Apple products in the Sony Stores? Some gross twist of fate?

Why does the MacPro lock up when running multiple applications at once all the time? Mine doesn't.

Why does iTunes cut the sound when processing Album Artwork or other work in the background? It is processing the ID3 tag. I am going to guess it cuts out in order to not corrupt the mp3 file as it does this.

Why did Apple not adopt Coverflow as the developers originally intended? Why is it slow and buggy? Works fine for me.

Why did Apple adopt the slow Intel processors when IBM said they could develop cool G5 and G6 processors? To hot, to expensive, wrong road map. Move on.

Why does Apple Stores use a Windows based portable point of sale device? Are you SURE that is windows based? Look closer.

Why is Quicktime so full of exploits? Why does it annoy PC users with nagware? Dude, it annoys EVERYONE with nagware. But the point of quicktime is this. It is the one technology that Apple created that is becoming ubiqitous. Therfore, that is where malware will attach itself to the Apple frontier.

Why is Apple hardware prohibtably expensive? If you want the porsche you pay for the porche. If you can afford the yugo, your stuck with the yugo.

Why does the iPhone actually cost one $1400 and it only costs $300 to make? Is this really a serious question? Gee God forbid someone makes a desirable product and make 50 points on it. Geez.

Why does a iPod Classic with 160Gb cost three times as much as a 160GB hard drive? Does a 160GB drive give you an interface. Move on.

Why doesn't Apple allow installation of Mac OS X on external drives? Like a external RAID 0 for a iMac? That maybe coming someday

Why doesn't Mac OS X simply run Windows software? It does homeslice. Boot camp.
Why risk security just for the sake of the shit code.

Hope that helps.

@ answer me

Gotta congratulate you for the most intriguing troll of the week award. So many questions, so little caring to answer them all.

My favorite, though, is the one about the iPhone costing $1,400. Not sure where you shop, dude, but mine cost $399. And if you're going to add monthly fees, choke on it. I was already an AT&T;subscriber, and my iPhone bill is $20 LESS each month than for my crappy, disfunctional Treo 600.

My second favorite question is "Why does cheap crap sell so well?" Because a lot of people are perfectly happy with cheap crap, or don't know enough to tell the difference. McDonald's sells the most hambugers, but that doesn't make 'em any good.

They had this head-to-head with the iPhone this morning on "The Today Show" and of course the tech guy went with the Voyager. He liked the real keypad. Um, yeah, so much for that. Oh, and he also almost gave the nod to the Zune 80 because of wireless and the FM radio. Went iPod Classic in the end because of iTunes Store.

I happen to like LG products. We have one of their refrigerators. It is outstanding!

Dec 18, 07 - 09:13 pm Comment from: Jacob

"But it is the Number One phone and the iPhone is not, why is that?"

- I'm not sure what you are basing that on.

"Why is Windows the Number One selling OS and Mac OS X is not?"

- Because most people are biased against macs early on in life, by their family, friends, etc. who all assure them that "Macs suck/are too expensive/can't use 2-button mice/can't run the software they need/aren't as compatible/etc."

If the 1st generation iPod was so perfect, why did Apple have to come out with cheap, low capacity iPods?

- They didn't "have" to. They chose to in order to further expand their marketshare by appealing to another market; the flash, low-capacity market. They were the dominant player in the high-capacity hard drive digital music player market (and still are), so they decided to focus on other markets in digital music players. And of course, prices came down and sizes went up over time; even the most expensive iPod today is cheaper than the original.

"Why didn't the iPod Hi-Fi sell?"

- Because it wasn't a very good product. Isn't Apple allowed to have ANY product that isn't revolutionary?

"Why does cheap crap sell well?"

- Because people like to feel like they are getting a deal. Why do people who make hundreds of thousands a dollars a year who could shop anywhere they want still shop at Walmart? Because it makes them feel good to think that they are getting good prices.

Also, uninformed people often see no difference between cheaper and higher priced items which appear, to them, similar or the same. I mean, why buy a more expensive computer that "does the same thing"?

"Are some people born with a gene lacking the ability to judge quality and value?, why? Does it explain PC users?"

- The idea that genetics <b>solely<b> determines anything about personality is out of fashion with psychologists these days.

"Why did Apple come out with annoying glossy only screens which over 85% people dislike?"

- Where is this 85% data coming from? Most people I know wouldn't even know what the hell you mean by "glossy" vs "matte" screens, much less care. I see tons of people at my University with MacBooks, far more than with any other single brand/model of laptop, so it can't be that bad. I see all sorts of people with glossy-screened PC laptops too, who presumably chose it.

"Why did OS X 10.5 get released with so many bugs?"

- Because new software is buggy! Even Apple can't magically debug everything.

"Why doesn't OS X.5 work properly in the Apple Stores?"

- News to me...

"Why is there so many security issues with OS X when for years OS 9 was nearly perfectly secure?"

- OS 9 had more viruses than OS X. As well, with the resurgence of macs, OS X is higher profile than OS 9 was, and the UNIX underpinnings offer malware writers a starting point compared to the completely alien OS9 underpinnings.

"Why did Apple adopt Intel's and Microsoft's (The "Evil Wintel Alliance") privacy intrusive EFI?"

- Because it's a new and improved standard, despite what conspiracy theorists like yourself insist. If you know anything about Apple, it should be that they LOVE adopting new and improved standards.

"Why did some early Intel Mac's have the TPM chip and now they don't?"

- Because Apple didn't really care either way since they weren't planning on making use of it, so they just took whatever Intel gave them.

"Why didn't Apple adopt BlueRay drives in all their machines yet?"

- Because it's still too expensive. I would be surprised if it doesn't happen in 2008 though.

"Why did Apple hobble iMovie, charging users for a upgrade and then taking features away?"

- Because they did a re-write and didn't have time to add everything back in. They were also trying to make it more true to it's target market. I would expect some of the features to be added back in in future versions, though.

"Why doesn't Apple offer more computer hardware options? A upgradable iMac?"

- Because that's one of the things that killed them in the 90's, and it goes against their "simplicity" theme. I wouldn't mind one or two more models, especially a tower between the iMac and Mac Pro, but on the whole they serve most people's needs.

"Why can't one build a Mac? Why can't one buy exactly the specs they need?"

Because Apple likes to control the whole widget. It's their philosophy, take it or leave it.

"Why does Apple hate the gaming market?"

- Because it's not, and never will be, one of their core markets. It's also not terribly profitable, and it would cost them more to pander to than the profit they would reap.

Dec 18, 07 - 09:14 pm Comment from: Jacob

"Why didn't Apple adopt the Cell processor? Especially for graphics?"

- Because it's not a general purpose processor. Despite all the hype, the cell is not the holy grail of computing.

"Why is Sony products in the Apple Stores and Apple products in the Sony Stores?"

- Why is does this even matter?

"Why does the MacPro lock up when running multiple applications at once all the time?"

- Sounds like there's something wrong with your computer.

"Why does iTunes cut the sound when processing Album Artwork or other work in the background?"

- Because there isn't enough processing power available. It basically only happens when the processing power is all being thrown at something else, and it's usually temporary.

"Why did Apple not adopt Coverflow as the developers originally intended? Why is it slow and buggy?"

- I've had no trouble with it.

"Why did Apple adopt the slow Intel processors when IBM said they could develop cool G5 and G6 processors?"

- The new Intel processors a great, find a new thing to whine about. What IBM "says" and what they deliver are two different things... just look at the "3Ghz promise" fiasco.

"Why does Apple Stores use a Windows based portable point of sale device?"

- Why does this matter?

"Why is Quicktime so full of exploits? Why does it annoy PC users with nagware?"

- Because Apple isn't a Windows software maker.

"Why is Apple hardware prohibtably expensive?"

- It's not. See above.

"Why does the iPhone actually cost one $1400 and it only costs $300 to make?"

- It doesn't. And we have no idea what it costs Apple.

"Why does a iPod Classic with 160Gb cost three times as much as a 160GB hard drive?"

- Because an iPod is more than a hard drive? Come on.

"Why doesn't Apple allow installation of Mac OS X on external drives? Like a external RAID 0 for a iMac?"

- This is probably coming.

"Why doesn't Mac OS X simply run Windows software?"

- It doesn't do it out of the box because Apple doesn't want to encourage it, because of the effect on native mac development that would happen. Duh.

Why didn't Apple adopt BlueRay drives in all their machines yet?

Because they don't want the optical drives at all! This is one thing that I think almost everyone is missing the big picture on...

Apple doesn't give a rat's ass about BlueRay or HD-DVD. The internet is the future, and they will probably be the one's to make that a reality. Kiss all this BlueRay / HD crap goodbye.

The last thing the crew over at Apple wants is something being inserted, or plugged into, one of their devices. Just look at the batteries for iPhone / iPods. Can't remove them... They ditched the floppy drive on the iMac. Peace out floppy...

In their industrial design theory there is the idea that someone should have a thin rectangular device and that's it. No cords, no disks, no anything.

Just a thin rectangular device.

Well, this time around I'm having loads of fun patiently listening to their long sales pitches and then asking, "Does Verizon have the iPhone yet?" Of course the answer is no, and I then proceed to ask, when? And the answer is often,"...I don't have any information on that." My closing statement is, "When I can get the iPhone with Verizon service I'll be much more interested in talking about getting into another contract."
