Cisco WebEx expands support for Apple Mac users across collaboration suite
Wednesday, March 26, 2008 - 04:12 PM EST

On-demand collaboration applications and services leader WebEx, now part of Cisco, has expanded Apple Mac support across its suite of business process collaboration applications. WebEx Meeting Center, WebEx WebOffice, WebEx Event Center, WebEx Training Center, WebEx Sales Center and WebEx Support Center now offer cross platform support for Mac OS X Leopard and Safari 3.

This expanded support is part of Cisco WebEx's ongoing attention to multi-platform support and its growing customer base of Mac users.

"You can't deny that the Apple Mac is becoming more prevalent in businesses; in fact, we have seen Mac usage double in last year," said Ilan Kasaan, director of product management, Cisco WebEx, in the press release. "We want to ensure that all of our customers have a successful experience, and as with all of our solutions, we are consistently upgrading to meet the demands of our growing user base."

The expanded support for Mac OS X Leopard spans the entire Cisco WebEx collaboration suite to ensure Mac users receive similar reliability, speed and support:

Specific features include:
• Increased launch and join speeds for WebEx Meeting Center
• Better desktop/application sharing performance in WebEx Meeting Center
• Better presentation sharing performance in WebEx Training Center, WebEx Event Center and WebEx Sales Center
• Up to six videoconferencing channels with a WebEx Meeting Center session
• Better 3D animations in shared Keynote documents across the WebEx suite
• Improved sound quality for VoIP and audio broadcasting across the WebEx suite

Traditionally, Cisco says, Mac support has lagged due to the limited number of corporate users; however, as adoption of the Mac has grown Cisco WebEx has increased its support for the platform across its entire suite. Over the last 3 years, Cisco WebEx has added new features and additional support aimed at Mac users and remains ahead of the competition in supporting this segment. Most recently, the company announced that its remote access solution, WebEx PCNow, now provides support for PC-to-Mac, Mac-to-PC and Mac-to-Mac as well as Apple iPhone sessions.

Cisco WebEx offers free trials of its collaboration services. To learn more about WebEx Meeting Center or to sign up for a 14-day free trial, visit http://www.webex.com/go/macpage .

You can't buy better PR than this ... unless you're Micro$oft and you like giving money away to bloggers.

If this is a real improvement then great. We still have to be able to work with the Windows crowd, which is the majority at the moment, so we need these tools for the Mac.

Full functionality/support for Mac users on WebEx is a BIG victory, one that will support further growth in the Mac platform.
GO APPLE!!

@Jubel,
You are absolutely right. A huge impediment to Mac adoption is lack of parity in collaboration tools and other software with the predominant Windows platform. You may respect the Mac, you may want a Mac, but when 80+% of clients and co-workers are operating through Windows machines, you find the easiest solution is to simply follow suit. Major corporate suppliers such as Cisco acknowledging and publishing once again for Mac users begins to erase the barrier of entry for Macs in becoming a major business platform.

Extra support from Cisco lately.
So what exactly was in that iPhone trademark agreement?

I tried to use WebEx under Safari and Firefox today with no success on my Mac. I had to run XP under VMWare to get the WebEx Meeting Manager to work.

The meeting manager installer is Vise and looks out-of-date.
