CNET: Apple is scared of RIM’s Storm
Friday, November 21, 2008 - 01:35 PM EDT

"Is it a coincidence that Apple's iPhone 2.2 update was released on the same day the BlackBerry Storm hit stores with a touch screen, 3G connectivity, and enterprise-friendly functionality that rivals anything Apple has on the market?" Don Reisinger asks for CNET.

"I think not," writes Reisinger. "Apple realizes that RIM is releasing a major offering that could shake Steve Jobs and Co. to its core... Say what you will, but Apple is scared. And it should be."

Reisinger writes, "Regardless, the BlackBerry Storm provides the kind of experience that we haven't seen yet from RIM."

MacDailyNews Take: You can say that again:
• TIME Mag reviews RIM’s BlackBerry Storm: ‘Novelty screen feels cheap; steer clear of this storm’ - November 20, 2008
Chicago Tribune reviews RIM’s BlackBerry Storm: ‘Can’t compete with Apple’s iPhone’ - November 20, 2008
Gizmodo reviews RIM’s BlackBerry Storm: ‘Heavy, laggy, sluggish, unstable, clunky, and tiring’ - November 20, 2008
Engadget reviews RIM’s BlackBerry Storm: ‘Frustrating, inelegant, uncomfortable; a disappointment’ - November 20, 2008
PC World reviews RIM’s BlackBerry Storm: ‘Awkward, disappointing; a failed experiment’ - November 20, 2008
BlackBerry Storm: No Wi-Fi. No iPod. No iTunes App Store. No sale. - November 14, 2008

Reisinger continues, "Although it will never admit it, and Apple will claim that its iTunes integration and App Store makes it a better choice, you can bet that company executives are running scared Friday. Even though Apple created this category and revolutionized the market, RIM just one-upped the founders, and Apple knows that... The iPhone was cool, up until yesterday. But today, there's a new phone in town, and if you ask me, it just took the title."

Full article here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers "MobiWan" and "Tim" for the heads up.]

MacDailyNews Take: Puleeze. The only thing Apple could possibly be scared of it is that something from RIM's crack hardware and software devs might rub off.

CNET, is it too much to ask for at least some semblance of reality to be included in your Dvorkian hit-whoring?

What a stupid article. Why would this small bug-fix release have anything to do with the Storm?

What a bunch of rubbish. Cnet needs to stop drinking kool aid

Nov 21, 08 - 02:43 pm Comment from: My 2 Cents

Apple is as frightened of the Storm as they are of the Zune. I wonder how much this guy got paid by RIM to write this drivel?

Nov 21, 08 - 02:44 pm Comment from: MacFhearghaile

Cnet=frigtards

Nov 21, 08 - 02:44 pm Comment from: John

Scared? Ha,ha!!!! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please, what a fricking joke!

Nov 21, 08 - 02:44 pm Comment from: MD Balloon Guy

MDN comment:"You can say that again." Brilliant and succinct! THIS is what I love at at MDN! (Still laughing!)

Nov 21, 08 - 02:45 pm Comment from: Richie

OK, so the "Storm" got one good plug out of... what 20 or so? And CNET didn't even really give a good review. Guess Apple just waited around for the last couple months with this update just sitting there- waiting for RIM to finally figure out how to get their phones to work. I can't wait for RIM to put their updates out for the STORM. You can down-load them... can't you? I mean, just like the iPhone?

Nov 21, 08 - 02:46 pm Comment from: John

Unbelievable!

I knew everyone in the media is for sale cheap, but this one takes the cake.

Just plain stupid.I bet this b_astard never even had his hands on either unit!

DUMB.

Nov 21, 08 - 02:53 pm Comment from: pr

Apple is on a CLEAR path to absolutely DESTROY RIM...they know it..hence the "innovation" RIM just rolled out. The Storm is NOT a professional level device. Arguably that could also be said of the iPhone I suppose but the fact is that the iphone is a PLATFORM upon which many things can be run. Wait until the next point upgrade for the iPhone and watch RIM's balls just shrink up into early Le June Peas.

Nov 21, 08 - 02:53 pm Comment from: Ian

I almost thought this was from The Onion it's that far out there. That MDN take is absolutely priceless.

Nov 21, 08 - 02:53 pm Comment from: MacFhearghaile

@My 2 Cents

I'll bet he got paid with a RIM job.

Nov 21, 08 - 02:57 pm Comment from: Demon

ROFLMAO!

Keep the Storm away from kids (and some adults I know) or it'll end up with all kinds of crap shoved in the gaps for the click screen. Wonder how long their cheep screen is going to hold up to the repeated pressing? And according to RIM if your enterprise runs the RIMs Blackberry email push and management software, that software will not work with the Storm and an update for the push/management software has not yet been announced and upgrade pricing has not yet been set.
No Multi-touch, No Wi-Fi, No typo auto correct, cheap plastic case and poor design, with loads of BFRs..

Apple's not worried, if anything they're passing a doobie around under the trees at the Apple Campus Courtyard or planning a party on the beach with the families.

Nov 21, 08 - 02:59 pm Comment from: R2

I think the Storm's far more significant than the Zune. That's going a little too far.

But to say Apple execs are running scared is equally ridiculous. If anything Cupertino is wrapping up the next generation iPhone and ready to move a couple more steps in front of the competition.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:00 pm Comment from: Hibow

Copy this review...it will hang in the CNET Hall of Shame.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:00 pm Comment from: Matt

Stupid. Apple has sent out a lot of updates within the past couple days. But yeah, I am sure it is because they are scared. Idiots. CNet is just getting worse and worse it seems.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:02 pm Comment from: Spudly

Reisinger is a f*cking hit whore....and don't forget moron!

Nov 21, 08 - 03:05 pm Comment from: iWill

Why is it that all the new also-ran phones are looking so derivative of the iPhone? Hmm...

Yeah, Apple execs must be sooo scared this afternoon.

C'mon, what else ya got?

Nov 21, 08 - 03:06 pm Comment from: fax

I ntrerpretted the release of 2.2 as laughing in their faces, especially after those stellar reviews the Storm got.

This explains everything: His bio in the article says he's an expert on Flowbee Haircut Systems.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:10 pm Comment from: Buster

What's so funny...we are all scared of getting rimmed!

Nov 21, 08 - 03:12 pm Comment from: MacBill

CNET is a worthless website.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:18 pm Comment from: Skeeter

Is this supposed to be a joke story?

Just look at all of the reviews that have stated the STORM is clearly a disaster from RIM

Nov 21, 08 - 03:21 pm Comment from: IKON

CNET wants to buy some real cheap apple stock or what?

Nov 21, 08 - 03:23 pm Comment from: Argelius

I wish Apple was scared enough by the Storm to add Copy/Paste functionality to the iPhone!

Nov 21, 08 - 03:23 pm Comment from: Wings2Sky

Well, While I think that RIM is the one to be scared, MDN conveniently didn't bother to quote the meat of the piece ...

"Consider this: the BlackBerry Storm offers cut-and-paste (duh!) functionality, its touch screen provides tactile feedback, it works as a tethered modem (a major plus for businesses), allows for expandable memory, boasts video recording, and the battery is removable. The list goes on, but I think that grouping proves the point well: the iPhone 3G is not as capable as we may think."

These actually are advantages that I would like to see in iPhone. I think that they are coming, but RIM did what M$ did not - mainly, they not only tried to copy cat the iPhone, but they found out what was missing and made sure that they provided it.

Viva la competition! Apple needs to add these features and add the ability the swing that camera around (or just put another on the front) to do video chats and it will continue it killing spree.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:24 pm Comment from: wishiwashere

A little while ago I spent some time playing with a Storm. Fail. In terms of user experience, it doesn't even come close.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:24 pm Comment from: ericdano

Who is this "journalist" again?.........who?..........who?

Never heard of him. I can see why. When every other tech site that has some gravitas, like Engadget, gave it a poor review, CNet comes up with a good review? What?

Nov 21, 08 - 03:26 pm Comment from: Undertrader

Last I checked Apple could buy RIM with cash and have plenty left over, so I don't think they're scared.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:27 pm Comment from: JadisOne

After all the real media outlets gave their opinions, the butt-wipe internet periodical wanted to try and put the Storm in a positive light probably b/c their editors all use Blackberry's and Windows XP.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:28 pm Comment from: Follower

"...to its core." Of Apple. See what he did there?

He'll be here all week. Try the veal!

Nov 21, 08 - 03:28 pm Comment from: Gregg Thurman

I've never seen the need for a removable battery. The half life on the battery that Apple uses is more than two years.

After two years you are going to be looking at the latest greatest, not a new battery.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:30 pm Comment from: MizuInOz

@John...

The only "unit" this dweeb has his hands on is the one that he uses a pair of tweezers to hold to take a whiz...

As in "this guy is no whizard"...

What a load of choda chomping carp this (I can't think of a descriptor - so supply you own) is trying to pass off as faltu-teligence!

Cheers...

Nov 21, 08 - 03:32 pm Comment from: gregmills

Hey, you Apple guys be nice, this guy probably thinks Vista is an outstanding operating system.....

Nov 21, 08 - 03:34 pm Comment from: Jimy

Yeah, it's frightening how poorly a new product can be reviewed.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:38 pm Comment from: 84 Mac Guy

Yeah, Jobs is afraid of RIM's Storm. He is afraid a frustrated user is going to throw it at a wall when he's walking by.

Nov 21, 08 - 03:39 pm Comment from: Cascadians

Wings2Sky, you posted exactly what I was going to, thanks! You're right smile

just another hit whore article

Nov 21, 08 - 03:46 pm Comment from: Mac_ATTY

@ WINGS... I completely agree... MDN also forgot to mention the positive articles from the Wallstreet Journal, Businessweek, Financial Times, etc... even the consistently pro-Apple reviewer Walt Mossberg of the the WSJ.com found the STORM just as good or better in some aspects then the iPhone...

Plus the STORM has:
* MMS!
* FLASH
* Camera FLASH
* 3.2 M Camera
* Exandable Memory via SD cards
* Removable and Longer Battery Life
* Verizon Wireless
* and Many more...
It almost has me considering dropping the iPhone and going back to Verizon. This will be the corporate solution to the iPhone...why add the iphone when the Storm allows companies to offer iPhone features while maintaing the status quo... this phone will be a succes.

Competion like this is only good for the consumer...the iPhone will have to add most of these features to stay competitive...

Nov 21, 08 - 03:51 pm Comment from: sparkplug

Hey Don, give me a call on your BB Storm using it's WI-FI connection. Oops, forgot about that one didn't you?

Nov 21, 08 - 04:04 pm Comment from: thethirdshoe

Nobody asked him...

Nov 21, 08 - 04:04 pm Comment from: PXT

Weird to talk about Apple being scared because there's a new Blackberry to compete in corporate. Apple are not running scared because they have little to lose. They are blasting the competition in the consumer market and anything they get in corporate is a bonus to be built on over time. RIM have 76% of corporate and Apple are newcomers with 14% and slowly increasing. Their first success in corporate has been to overtake Palm, and take 1% off RIM. Apple's little break into corporate will be a learning experience for Apple, they can add many of the so-called missing features that corporate need in software as they gain that experience, and we can reasonably expect new iPhone hardware in 2009.

Nov 21, 08 - 04:04 pm Comment from: Alex McKenna

Mac-Atty's list of Storm's "advantages" are really non-essentials - or even actual disadvantages - to a streamlined machine.
Cutting out the less-useful add-ons is the secret of a good device. Apple excels in this paring-down to the optimum configuration.
Removable batteries, and card-slots would start to make the thing a cumbersome monster, like a Dell laptop.

Nov 21, 08 - 04:11 pm Comment from: DH

This guy is smoking dope or some other derivative. Hasn't he read the reviews on this also ran product ? Hardly a fierce competitor. Apple will continue to innovate and let the competition try to keep up. Think about how long these cell phone makers have been in this business and how quickly Apple has shaken them to the core. For example : Palm. Competition is good ... but I don't think it's keeping Steve up at night.

Nov 21, 08 - 04:13 pm Comment from: Reality Check

OK, let's see....

The STORM has:
* MMS! = I'll take Rich HTML e-mail anyday thanks...
* FLASH = Performance & Battery draining Hog
* Camera FLASH = On a cell phone cam I really couldn't care less
* 3.2 M Camera = Again, it's a cell phone, I have a $150 Canon 8MP camera for taking pictures.
* Exandable Memory via SD cards = 16GB cards cost what?
* Removable and Longer Battery Life = You'll need it with the use of Flash and the camera flash.
* Verizon Wireless = Crap, plus they wouldn't let RIM put Wi-Fi in the Storm, so no thanks.

Nov 21, 08 - 04:16 pm Comment from: MAC_ATTY

@ Alex... Apple does excel at good design... However, from the reviews I've read on "corporate" media sites such as the WSJ, FT, BW... the STORM is a really good effort too. I'd love it if Apple enabled the iPhone to accept SD cards, Had 3.2M Camera with a Flash, MMS, and allowed modem tethering like the Storm. Plus the storm is able to do this and still have better battery life than the iPhone. All-in-all this probably means a much improved iPhone come June 2009 - this type of competition can only be good.

Nov 21, 08 - 04:22 pm Comment from: KingMel

If you had any credibility, Reisinger, it's gone. I hope you got paid a lot for this article because your future revenue might take a big dip as a result of it.

iCal and move on. Nothing to see here.
