CNET Australia reviews Apple iPhone 3GS: Unmatched by the competition, Editors’ Choice
Wednesday, July 01, 2009 - 05:23 PM EST

Apple Online Store CNET Australia has reviewed Apple's new iPhone 3GS (32GB).

"The combination of its fantastic browser, the full-featured iPod media player and Apple's App Store forms a compelling trio and are together unmatched by the competition," Kent German and Joseph Hanlon report for CNET Australia.

"Adding an 'S' to the end of the iPhone 3G may have given us one of the worst mobile phone names next to the LG Cookie, but there's no denying the extra speed in executing applications," German and Hanlon report.

"The camera upgrade is more than a higher pixel count, with auto focus and auto colour and white balance, the voice recognition chip is an excellent improvement and the speed bump is immediately apparent," German and Hanlon report. "We've had a few problems with the iPhone 3GS so far, some may say major issues including reception and battery life, but this doesn't detract us from enjoying the world of mobile computing at our fingertips."

German and Hanlon report, "And this is what the iPhone is now and what the competition is scrambling to become: a mobile computing platform. Apple doesn't make the best mobile phone, but the iPhone is today's best mobile computer with built-in telephony. This is due, in part, to the device itself, and in equal measure to the excellent App Store and the mind-boggling level of support it's received from developers around the world."

"Apple doesn't make the best mobile phone,"
And what device is the best mobile phone yet?

Jul 01, 09 - 04:50 pm Comment from: Steven - Why Not The Best Phone?

I can't think of another phone that:

- Does Visual Voice Mail Better.
- Does Contacts Better.
- Does Recent Calls Better.
- Does Favorites better.

This statement seems very cliche in the industry, so as to not look like the tech writer is falling all over the iPhone in praise, but I have yet to see anyone point out why it is NOT the best phone as well - nor will we... Rather, we'll get the same dumb statement with nothing to back it up.

And no bitter response from MDN!

Even article writers use troll bait.

I am not surprised that the iPhone’s reception is poor over there, as most devices created off shore seem to get that sort of treatment.

Take human devices for example that are trying to engage in an exchange of social information. You would not believe how many of the Australian reception towers do not have to basic civilized protocol to ask an inquiring device where they are from. Instead a most discourteous base “BLOODY YANK” signal is blasted out. This certainly has a big effect on causing poor reception.

Following the issue with the base signal is the failure of accepting a correction protocol to the system. Sending a polite clarification signal such as “actually I am a Canadian.” or even a photographic identification of one’s passport will not be received as proof of the transmission’s origin. An additional encryption key may be needed for recognition. It is useful to have one of these special translators, another Australian human device who will send out an identification signal such as “yes he is Canadian and not American” to the unit. As you can well imagine such models are few and far between.

Even while such an encryption key may give you an acknowledgement of your orgin signal, reception is still unlikely as the unit will turn itself off, possibly due to some insecurity “you do not have to acknowledge a mistake, if you do not exist” software bug or perhaps it is simply one of the many arrogant behaviour “well you are not even worth hating” algorithms of the POM OS that makes even Windows look humble.

I am confident that if a civilized or a non-xenophobic sub routine is ever introduced into the Australian human devices here reception will improve, but until then you might want to consider staying at home.

Um... Have a bad trip?
We aren't all that bad. I am sorry you met a bunch of unwelcoming ratbags. The folks where I live don't confuse Canadians and US citizens and welcome both.
Cheer up.

This article has a lot of crap.
To say something is better, you had to have another item to compare to, this jerky just say "this is better or worse" but compared with WHAT!!!
What's wrong with the S in the name? can this $tupid give us a better name in the phones out there.. the w123sn from Sony? those N91, N87 and N what ever that we don't have any idea what the number may represent?
And what about "Apple doesn't make the best mobile phone", Ok, if the iPhone is not the best mobile phone yet, what would be the best phone and why? any idea? or you just wanted to look more "open mind"???

"Apple doesn't make the best mobile phone,"

I don't think that this is an unfair statement. Many iPhone reviewers are the same writers that typically cover the mobile phone beat. They test a lot of phones for reception and clarity. I've had cell phones that seemed to pick up signals and sounded and transmitted with excellent clarity... better than the iPhone. But these phones have a single mission: cellular telephony. I don't think is a major shot at the iPhone to say it is not the best "mobile phone" because it so much more, and it's this "more" that makes it the best full featured mobile communications device.

This is the second rant I have read about you crapping on Aussies. If you had a bad time with someone there, you should have sorted it then. Stop wallowing in your own rubbish and 'Get over it eh!'

Jul 02, 09 - 12:31 am Comment from: mike_in_helsinki

@ Fergman

Agree. Aussies are my kinda folks. Catherine, are you listening out there? That was one helluva night in Hong Kong, and Sydney, and Bangkok, and Kalmar, and Stockholm, and Helsinki ... and, and, and ....

Jul 02, 09 - 04:05 am Comment from: Road Warrior

@ Alexo: ?????- My sentiments exactly. I mean once you can pass it off as an idiot or someone who has had a bad day. Months of it, you really start to wonder about the place. Now I am just scratching the surface on this, I am not even going to comment about other aspects...for now.

Hey Tim: Well if it was just a trip I could pass it off as that, unfortunately I have been living here for a few years. Don’t get me wrong, you can find good people here, and I would venture that they might be the majority, but I would not know, I have just been attacked without provocation (mostly verbally but a couple physically) too many times here because it was determined that I was an American. Fortunately telling people right off the bat I am a Canadian has helped a bit. I have found a sort of decent spot where the people are a little more laid back so these events are now rare, but I just had yet another one the other day and I still shake my head at it. So where do you live? I might want to move over to that part of the isle, or I might even be close by.

@Fergman: Thanks for your sentiments. If this is only the second time you have read me crapping like this, you must be new here. Your posts make sense except that I really don’t want to spend my time sorting out the majority of an entire city. Let me put it to you another way, after about a year over here there were two people I had met, yes two that had displayed the civilized dignity of asking me where I was from. The rest (and I kinda lost count if you know what I mean) told me I was a bloody yank. I did try to sort it out by simply and politely telling them I was a Canadian, but to no avail. I have found out that being polite to people doesn’t go very far here.

Frankly though, I don’t really think I am the one that has to get over anything, but for years I did. It wasn’t until I met other Canadians who told me of the same barbaric treatment that I realized that it wasn’t me. Amazing eh?

One of the cool things about iPhones in Australia is that we can buy them unlocked directly from Apple and use them with any carrier/network we like.

Jul 02, 09 - 05:19 am Comment from: tim

@Road Warrior
In 53 years in Australia I have never been attacked or seen anyone attacked... and yet I know it happens. I read the newspapers. I am sorry you have had such a rough trot but I still think that statistics may play a part. There's 20 million of us and you might still have been unlucky - even after all this time.

I am on the Gold Coast but not in the Tourist Trap part. Maybe you should give it a go.

I have to admit that Canadians are much less likely to elicit a reaction than US citizens. But that is no excuse. Some Aussies are precisely as you describe and consequently indefensible. All I'm asking is that you try and keep an open mind about some of the 19 million or so that you haven't met yet.

There are 33 million odd Canadians (about 34 million altogether wink ). I have only met a very few but they were just as nice as the Americans, Brits, Irish, French, New Zealanders, Italians and Spanish that I have met along the way. I just try and take everyone one at a time and the next person in line gets a clean sheet to start on.

Cheers

Hey Tim:

Ya, you sound like a good sort, and to tell you the truth, I am in the neighbourhood (Victoria is brutal on the bloody yank attitude, and that was prior to 9-11).

It is certainly a part of statistics, and if it were the case of once in a blue moon, it would not bother me, but when it gets to being a near daily situation, well I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, and it really stumped me because I am a well seasoned traveler and cultural differences have never bothered me much.

My fellow Canadians that I met a few years later though put me on the track that it might be different. As I now introduce myself as a Canadian first up, I have circumvented the issue, save for recently, probably why it is such a sore point. The benefit this time was that I was with a friend and I asked him afterwards if my introductory greeting was out of line, was my body language antagonistic, or was there something in the tone of my voice. He said no, that person was just being an idiot. Ironically that person was acting totally civil towards my friend until I opened my mouth and then the bloodys came out.

I do try to keep an open mind, but believe me it is frustrating to no end, so much so that I don't go out unescorted anymore. I have perceived it as simply too dangerous to travel alone here.

Thanks though for your kind thoughts, and to tell you the truth, the Gold Coast is one of the very kewl places to go here. Queensland is actually quite nice.

53 years, wow I take it you were born here then. You must have seen quite some changes along the coast.
