CNET benchmarks Apple’s Safari 4: Fastest browser on the planet. Period.
Wednesday, February 25, 2009 - 09:43 AM EDT

"Proving itself a staggering 42 times faster at rendering JavaScript than IE 7, our benchmarks confirm Apple's Safari 4 browser, released in beta today, is the fastest browser on the planet. In fact, it beat Google's Chrome, Firefox 3, Opera 9.6 and even Mozilla's developmental Minefield browser," Nate Lanxon reports for Crave at CNET UK.

"We used the SunSpider suite of JavaScript tests to determine which browser was the quickest, and the Safari 4 beat every browser in terms of speed, on both a PC running Windows XP SP2, and a Mac running OS X 10.6 with all updates applied," Lanxon reports.

MacDailyNews Note: We believe that's a typo and we're guessing that Lanxon really means "Mac OS X 10.5.6."

Lanxon continues, "We determined on a PC that Safari was a whopping 42 times faster than Internet Explorer 7, just over six times faster than Internet Explorer 8, 3.5 times faster than Firefox 3, and 1.2 times faster than Google Chrome... On Mac OS X, Safari was four times faster than Firefox 3 and a depressing (for Opera) 7.5 times faster than Opera 9."

Safari was co-developed with Bugatti....

BOOYAH! I'm loving Safari 4. It's way better than 3 and a gazillion times better than what I had been using (FF3 + Opera).

On the top sites, bookmarks and history eye candy, I wish I could right-click/control-click to force the thumbnail to load as opposed to waiting for Safari to go through and render the thumbnails.

" . . . OS X 10.6 with all updates applied . . . "
. . . confirming rumours that snow-leopard is indeed snappier?

Feb 25, 09 - 10:55 am Comment from: BacMook

"OS X 10.6" are CNET running Snow Leopard?

Feb 25, 09 - 10:58 am Comment from: bioness

Normally, theres not that much of a different with browsers. Infact in the past I stayed away from safari.

I just downloaded and ran Safari, my gosh I can feel the difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Feb 25, 09 - 11:01 am Comment from: tarzan69

It's nice to dream that there's a stable but really hush hush pre-release out there which CNET have, but i guess they mean 10.5.6

Feb 25, 09 - 11:13 am Comment from: Jubei

Now thats what you call Snappy. If only we can get companies/sites to stop using Active-x, .net, aspx.... that brings Safari to a halt.

Feb 25, 09 - 11:15 am Comment from: MacRaven

@tarzan69
Not necessarily. We were offered to Beta test Snow Leopard in November. CNET very well could be running a beta of Snow Leopard.

Safari 4 is fine if you can live with all those intrusive ads. I'll wait until PithHelmet is updated. Get your ashes.

Feb 25, 09 - 11:35 am Comment from: Wish I Was Here

Yeah, I downloaded this yesterday. Since I've never been much of a computer guy, it's the first time I've ever used any kind of beta software. All I can say so far is.....ooooh daddy like

Feb 25, 09 - 11:36 am Comment from: tarzan69

@MacRaven
I know betas are available - the developer betas continue to add new tweaks - but does Software Update work in the beta?
It's very rare to test products using a non-public beta release operating system, that's all.

Feb 25, 09 - 11:49 am Comment from: Chris

Ron, it's not clear what ads you're talking about. I installed the beta yesterday and it didn't ship with any ads.

Feb 25, 09 - 12:00 pm Comment from: spyinthesky

Wow wasn't expecting this, got everything that has tended me towards firefox especially the zoom function which is very useful in my work and lots more and so much better than the webkit nightly downloads I had been using.

Feb 25, 09 - 12:03 pm Comment from: steve32465

Is it just me or does these test seem to indicate that the browsing experience on the PC platform is faster than on the Mac? Not trying to say that PC is better in any way, but I've noticed that in my BootCamp Safari 4 seems faster than on the Mac side. It also could be that my Win XP install is very fresh and has no spyware or other crap to slow it down.

Feb 25, 09 - 12:11 pm Comment from: cb

I don't get it. I'm on a G5 (ppc) running Leopard and it's not faster.

And if you use "Top Sites" - it's a lot slower.

And I'm not a pessimest! Darn it.

Is it my system that is not optimized to run it?

Jubel writes, "Now thats what you call Snappy. If only we can get companies/sites to stop using Active-x, .net, aspx.... that brings Safari to a halt."

Good luck with that. In my former government office, some of the agency's web sites began validating that the browser was IE. I got around that by using user agents. But those Active X and other non-standard elements they insisted on using remained a problem for Firefox and Safari.

When I tried to get a waiver to permit installation of Firefox on our Windows Servers, my request was denied. And some of my former colleagues who used to work on Sun and Oracle were re-tasked to work on .Net and C# running on SQL Server. Your tax dollars at work.

Feb 25, 09 - 12:45 pm Comment from: Gary for the Plain Truth

I use firefox - how much faster than instantly open can it be?

And they should try it on Mac Daily News - the slowest loading site on the internet.

Feb 25, 09 - 12:48 pm Comment from: Ted Thompson

Were talking milliseconds in difference.
Anybody know how little amount of time that is?
If you blinked you wouldn't notice it.

1 Millisecond = 0.001 Seconds

Feb 25, 09 - 01:08 pm Comment from: ron

Chris. Sorry I didn't explain it well. Go to MDN > you'll see ads on the top and sides. When PithHelmet is installed, you won't see those ads. Same in other web sites. PithHelmet is not updated for Safari 4 yet.

Feb 25, 09 - 01:42 pm Comment from: bob

But it doesn't work with proxies.. so that makes it useless in a work environment. I can use every other browser at work... Safari not only doesn't get past the proxy.. I get locked out of my account for a few minutes as a result. It's been this way with every version.

Feb 25, 09 - 02:00 pm Comment from: jcw3rd

Any problems with PithHelmet plugin and Safari4? If PithHelmet is already installed, will it interfere with Safari4? If not, does it work as expected?

Feb 25, 09 - 02:04 pm Comment from: Jubei

@Raymond in DC

That is why Apple will never get past 10%. As much as I want Apple to succeed and grow market and provide a better experience for all, that Global Monopoly that is allowed to continue will never allow it to happen.

Feb 25, 09 - 02:11 pm Comment from: Z

Adblock, people, adblock.

Feb 25, 09 - 03:43 pm Comment from: steve32465

PithHelmet will not launch on Safari 4 and gives a notice saying that the "SIMBL" hasn't been tested with the Safari 4

I've instead downloaded Safari Adblock and it works fine. It doesn't have the customizations that PithHelmet had, but how much do you need to stop annoying ads and popups?!

Feb 25, 09 - 03:45 pm Comment from: nekogami13

Safari adblock .3.2 works just fine with safari 4.

Feb 25, 09 - 03:45 pm Comment from: EvangelizeWithRespect

Anybody else have the Safari 4 Beta mess with their email? After installing, Apple Mail kept crashing whenever it tried to download email. A crash message suggested Growl as a possible culprit so I removed Growl and it was still messed up--continually trying to download but never successfully downloading new email. I finally ran the uninstaller and all is well again.

It's a shame, because I was loving the beta, especially after fixing the tab positions, etc.

Feb 25, 09 - 04:33 pm Comment from: Kenneth

cb,

When I first installed it on my PPC G5 iMac, I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't any faster than Safari 3. But after a couple of hours (and today) it seems noticeably faster. I think initially S4 might be busy building up the internal/thumbnail database etc. I don't know what configuration you have but my G5 iMac is 1.8 GB with 2 GB RAM and I used it quite a bit for iMovie editing etc. so I am assuming the HD would be a bit fragmented (some factors that should affect Safari performance) but despite that I am still impressed with S4 performance. It's a beta but it's a keeper (I even saved the uninstaller just in case, but I probably won't be needing it before the full release!)

Seems that PithHelmet works on Safari 4 if you change the Info.plist to <string>5528</string>

Well, for me anyway!

I've been using the beta on two machines and haven't run into any problems with Mail on either. Have you checked the forums and MacFixit?

Feb 25, 09 - 05:56 pm Comment from: ken1w

Even the Tiger version is faster. You can actually notice the difference (improvement) in speed MORE using an old PowerPC Mac.

Safari was co-developed with Bugatti....

Bugatti sounds sexier than VW, so go ahead and stick with that.

(I'm assuming you're refering to the Veyron)

An early solution to the bad placement of tab bars in Safari4 lay well beyond the daring or competence of 99.5% of users, including yrs truly. Walter Mossberg Thursday provided a source more within my reach, at swoon.net/site/software.html {Mr. Mossberg presumed that such as I would know to place http:// before the address he provided.]

Mr. Mossberg called the decision to move the tabs to the top of the desktop Apple's "worst decision." I agree. It took a while to discover how to set up tabs, but I did and now use four tabs continually, for four online French dictionaries, two French to English, two entirely in French. The logical place for moving back and forth is right where it was: below the rarely touched ID lines above. ((I’ll get Safari4 when I figure out how to back up my computer or Apple produces a 24-inch matte screen for the iMac, whichever comes first.)

One hopes that the final Safari4 will restore the tab line to a more useful position and restore the blue progress information. (If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.) Perhaps, on computers with the latest and most powerful microprocessors and with the fastest connections to the Internet, the progress bar does not matter. But, for someone who can wait minutes for a file to appear, it's needed. It provides a visual clue to progress while one reads or does something other than stare at the screen.
