CNET hands-on with Apple iMac: ‘Without a doubt, the best home-use computer’
Sunday, August 26, 2007 - 12:00 AM EST

"Offering an attractive black bezel to accent the glass, reflective display, the iMac will immediately jump out at you. The Aluminum finish is a nice touch and the stylish black backing with the Apple logo adds even more character to an already appealing design," Don Reisinger blogs for CNET.

"The first day I brought my iMac home, everyone who saw it was taken aback by its design and overall usefulness. Mac OS X is still the OS heavyweight and on a device like this, it really shines. The new iMovie is quite appealing and it runs much quicker than the older version on my MacBook, but that can also be attributed to upgraded specs," Reisinger writes.

"If you're a possible Windows covert and you're still a little skeptical about the move, I recommend using Boot Camp to ease your transition. Running Windows on a Mac with the help of Boot Camp gives you the best of both worlds and trust me, you won't regret it," Reisinger writes. "Since I purchased the iMac last weekend, I've been using it exclusively as the computer that I write on, surf the web on and even do some photo and video editing on. Without a doubt, it's the best computer I've used for any of these situations."

Reisinger writes, "While the iMac may not necessarily appeal to the serious video and photo people who have a strong distaste for the glossy, glass screen, it is, without a doubt, the best home-use computer I have ever used."

Installing Windows on a new iMac is definitely NOT the best of both worlds. It's like connecting a brown Zune into your new BMW. What a waste!

I just got a 24" iMac and I have to say it wow! what an awsome machine this is.

Aug 25, 07 - 11:32 pm Comment from: gmac

biased dad...

altho uʻr sentiment is understood... (I have no choice but to run certain vital software in WXP.) it affords the curious a so-called back up( in the sense of weaning themselves off MSFT). but what a business decision by Apple!... they were waiting for the right time/tech to make it feel seamless.

zune... yes, what a joke...

iMac would also look cool if it was all black...

Aug 25, 07 - 11:35 pm Comment from: boulderfrog

Let's remember kids that nobody outside of the U.S. of A. has ever touched a zune. Never seen one here in Canada.

And Zune Tang is just some guy running this site hoping to make more hits.

Great to hear that the 24" iMac is stable and I hope the same is true of the 20" model.

Aug 26, 07 - 01:16 am Comment from: Big Al

Went to my local Mac store to see the new iMacs.

There was drool all over the damn things.

Eeewwww!

Aug 26, 07 - 02:22 am Comment from: TanZing

@Sol,

Just switched my Sis-in-law. She got a 20" iMac. Rock solid. I'd get a 24" if I could get a non glossy screen. Do a lot of photos so I need color accuracy.

The iMac really does look cool though.

I've only found a couple of negatives though when you compare it to the white iMac it replaces.

a) Thereis no longer the magnet on the side for storing the remote control and,

b) The white light is gone so you can't tell if it is in sleep mode or if the screen is just dimmed just by looking at it.

WindowsRG

If this has been posted before - my apologies.

re the story from cnet ... ok good review albeit with many slight of hand back stabs in it.

God, I hate cnet.

Aug 26, 07 - 06:40 am Comment from: rdbvideo

Love to have one, but....
(as a video pro... and photo pro friend agrees)
Glossy screen has to go!

Anyone out there up to making an anti-glare attachment?

Aug 26, 07 - 07:10 am Comment from: Glossy sceens = CVS

Ahhhh my eyestrain!!

Think of the damage to the children!

Aug 26, 07 - 07:23 am Comment from: Gnat Nuze

Owners of brown BMWs really appreciate the ability to color-coordinate their Zunes.

If you're a possible Windows covert and you're still a little skeptical about the move you are right to be, stick with what you know and what works. As the author says, "it is, without a doubt, the best home-use computer I have ever used". This is from a journalist whose work is writing and he only rates MACs for home use, see even MAC lemmings know they are merely toys. Get a real computer, do some work, even some writing, play some games too - or better still get an XBox, the hottest gaming system ever.

"I could have gone out and bought a Windows-only machine that would have cost me less, but where's the fun in that?" Obviously a MAC lemming, those dollars you have misspent could have bought you tons of games, pr0n, a Zune and some protected music from the superior Zune store. Do you know what fun means? There's lots of fun with Windows, take editing the registry for example, problem-solving, anticipation, battling the OS and the inevitable pleasure and satisfaction from a job well done when you win, more fun than those kiddies games you find on Macs.

Sheesh what's with all these MAC lemmings, have they started a breeding program?

Aug 26, 07 - 07:25 am Comment from: gwm

Just stick some Saran Wrap or something on it? Shouldn't be all that tough to dull it down a tad, no?

Aug 26, 07 - 07:45 am Comment from: R

Someone's a little constipated. Go take a Zune-- you'll feel better.

Just when we thought tape-on antiglare screens were left safely in the 1980's...

What next? Apple goes back to beige cases and 5.25 floppies? raspberry

Aug 26, 07 - 08:19 am Comment from: lobo

So, he bought a 24 inch iMac, installed Windows and played with it a little... and that's called a review? I really need to get me one of those jobs.

LMFAOFF. I just spit coffee all over my new iMac screen.

Took the glare off somewhat too.

Aug 26, 07 - 08:53 am Comment from: Gandalf

Aftermarket solutions can turn glossy screens matte but not vica versa, I'm sure we'll see some soon. I work with a lot of images and prefer glossy screens to the matte I've seen but I try not to wear light tops especially white shirts. This recent controversy is nothing compared to when screens first went matte, there were lots more complaints then. My first Mac had a matte screen, grayscale!

Now you know why Steve wears black turtlenecks grin

@boulderfrog

U can find a Zune at TigerDirect here in Canada.

Ugly...

BUT WHY is Apple coming out WITH iPodMini "FatBoys" in ZUNE colouring..... ahhhhhh

Apple DON'T do it!!!!

@ Biased Dad

"Installing Windows on a new iMac is definitely NOT the best of both worlds. It's like connecting a brown Zune into your new BMW. What a waste!"

I have to respectfully disagree with you. I would much rather run windows under Parallels than on a stand alone box. I know the article was referring to using Boot Camp but I'm really addressing your blanket statement above.

When running windows on my Mac under Parallels I can treat it just as another application. I swear it is seems more stables than just running it in Windows alone. In fact, I have two copies that I keep right now. One for financial software that I can't run on the Mac and one for development software that I can't run on that Mac.

For those of you that have never used anything but a Mac a poo poo the idea of ever using Windows please stop looking down your nose at those of us that don't have a choice. I've moved over as much as possible to OS X. I've told all that will listen that OS X is the better OS and the one they should be moving to. It wouldn't have made sense to do so before Parallels and/or Boot Camp.

The Mac / OS X is still lacking in financial software that measures up to what you can get on Windows. Parallels offers me "the best of both worlds." Not that anything windows can be considered a 'best of' in anything but if I have to use it, I'll use in on OS X please!

Climbing down off my soap box now.

Will Glare Screens Prevent Computer Vision Syndrome?

Glare screen filters may help somewhat, but they will not solve your computer vision problems because they only affect glare from the computer screen — not the visual problems related to the constant refocusing of your eyes when working at a computer. Only when your eyes can focus clearly at the plane of proper distance on the computer screen can they experience relief from the fatiguing effects of CVS.

Glossy screens produce multiple images at slightly different distances to your eye. Therefore your eyes are constantly focusing between the multiple images. This causes eyestrain and headaches with longterm use of the computer.

Although it's not scientifically proven that glossy screens themselves cause the harmful effects of CVS, after all in a completely dark room there would be no reflections. The blame is shifted to the enviroment the computer user chooses to use the computer.

Unfortunatly the consumer has very little choice most of the time.

It's sort of like car makers refusing to place seat belts in cars because the driver makes the choice to drive their car out of the garage. The car is expected to be used on the road in a moving condition and therefore needs safety restraints.

The computer is used in a working enviorment for hours on end each day. It's unreasonable to expect the consumer or the workplace to have to change the enviroment, at great cost no mind you, to be able to use the computer in a healthy fashion.

The argument I have is not against glossy screens, it's the lack of choice of Matte screens in the marketplace by Apple.

Glossy screen incure a additional cost of expensive computer glasses to offset the harmful effects of CVS caused by Apple's negligence.

I saw an iMAC last year at my cousin's friends's house. It didn't even come with Windows! Apple sells these things preloaded with this nasty-ass OS X or something and it doesn't even have a registry. WTF?! Don't get me started about the one button mouse. Hey Apple, it's 2007, time to add a button to your mouse like a REAL computer has. Dorks.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Oh, and the guy who wrote the review is a moron. Run that little baby iMAC next to a mighty Dell then tell me who has the best home-use computer.

Aug 26, 07 - 10:16 am Comment from: Big Al

There are Windows programs that will never have a Mac port or even a Mac equivalent.

I use a Windows program that has a market share of about 500 to 600 copies a year. At $2500 a copy, they don't make much money. They have one competitor, with a 100 copy market share, that has never turned a profit. Macs will need a 60% market share before this program is ported to a Mac.

Windows, in emulation on a Mac, is almost not annoying. Don't knock it.

Me too. I searched for his name and when I found and read his (her?) post I too was disappointed. This is obviously not the original Zune Tang. The real one made me laugh out loud. That fake one is just boring.

C1 Impersonator,
Are you really that bad at this? Your post is lame under any circumstances.

Aug 27, 07 - 01:23 am Comment from: akerbs

The new iMacs are fantastic, but Apple needs to send some to their authorized retailers. Its been weeks and we still don't have any....

Aug 27, 07 - 07:03 am Comment from: Lardlad

Being able to run Windows on a Mac, then seeing the success and how happy it makes certain people proves one thing. M$ victimizes computer users. They feel trapped, they HAVE to use Windows. But gee if I had a choice I'd get a Mac.

I say it again and again, Windows does NOT have 90%+ market share because it is the best. Strategy, positioning and strong arm tactics forces many people to use Windows.

Aug 27, 07 - 08:54 am Comment from: en

In reference to the CNET post(s) and the comments here about the glossy screen:

I just do not understand this, "Its wonderful, great, fantastic, but . . .
I hate that the stand is only 4" by 4". It is 1/2 an inch too big!!
or- its just the wrong shade of white,
or-glossy, I hate glossy and the 3$ that it cost for a antiglossy screen is just going to kill me.
or-Its a perfect hardware machine when you run windows, but a crappy hardware machine when you run OSX.
etc, etc, etc.

I don't know if its poor writing or just really weird people. ????

Now, for me: I just love everything about my car but I have to hate it cause the hubcaps are just sucky!!! I would never buy another one cause they should make better $14 hubcaps. !!!

en, tongue laugh
