CNET: Microsoft’s Windows Vista still not ready for prime time
Thursday, October 12, 2006 - 08:51 AM EST

The overall quality of this $399 Windows Vista Ultimate edition isn't deserving of final-release-candidate status, says CNET's Robert Vamosi. Expect to see at least one more interim build or perhaps even another release candidate soon, CNET says under the subtitle "Vista still not ready for prime time."

Vamosi takes a CNET "First Look: Windows Vista RC2" via online video here.

MacDailyNews Take: Why people (and the vast majority, no less) put up with Windows is unfathomable. They truly must believe that they have no other choice or perhaps it's just the good old "ignorance is bliss" factor that keeps working so profitably for Microsoft. Even if Vista actually worked, there is no way we could stand to look at and fight with an interface that looks like the spawn of two drunk inbred Macs who stumbled into some depraved fertility clinic run by Hanna-Barbera.

For our Windows-only visitors via Google News and elsewhere: Are you really going to spend that kind of money ($399 for Windows Vista Ultimate) on an operating system that is trying so desperately to be Apple's Mac OS X? Most likely, you're going to need a new computer to run Vista anyway. Why not use that money toward a new Mac instead? Install your current copy of Windows XP on it via Apple's free Boot Camp or Parallels US$79.99 Desktop for Mac. From what we see, you won't be missing out on much by ignoring Windows Vista (some call it "Windows XP SP3") and you'll be gaining so much more with Apple's virus-free Mac OS X and iLife applications running on elegant and inexpensive Intel-powered Apple hardware.

Now is the perfect time to consider trying something new (and you can still run your Windows applications, too)! At some point in your life, you've probably told someone, "You don't know what you're missing," right? Well, we're saying that to you today. Get a Mac! You deserve it. And the Mac community will be here to support your new adventure every step of the way. Why do we care what you use? Do it and you'll find yourself telling people to "Get a Mac," too. Switching from Windows PC to Mac really is a revelation.

Find out more about Mac OS X Tiger here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/tiger/
And Apple's Mac OS X Leopard (coming spring 2007) here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/

Apple's Intel-powered MacBook starts at just $1099. And, Apple's Intel-powered iMac starts at only $999.. Apple's Mac mini starts at just $599 (For $200 more than a box of Vista Ultimate, you get a Mac, Mac OS X, iLife, and so much more)!

Love the description of Vista.

Oct 12, 06 - 07:57 am Comment from: mikeR

So what do you really think about vista?

Oct 12, 06 - 08:02 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

Double whammy - it's the spawn of two already inbred things as opposed to being inbred as a result of their drunken union.

Oct 12, 06 - 08:05 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

Watching that video I've come to the conclusion that Vista actually looks worse than XP. That isn't the finished look is it? Tell me CNET installed some horrible skin or something.

Oct 12, 06 - 08:07 am Comment from: fenman

If you look at the video on the link - then you can see that it looks like M$ has used the OSX Stones wallpaper in the segment on creating user accounts. If not the exact image it is enough to qualify as YAUF (Yet Another Unoriginal Feature) from the masters of the BSOD.

Oct 12, 06 - 08:07 am Comment from: bloo

$399? WTF?!?

Oct 12, 06 - 08:08 am Comment from: coolfactor

mikeR,, what do you think?

I think it's too busy for the average user to understand. It doesn't make it "simple".

Holy crap that looks like crap.

Although I know I live in a country with many retards ( wink ) it's actually true MDN: many people have no clue when it comes to "operating systems": they still don't know that there is such thing as "another" OS, let alone Mac OSX. When they do know they believe it is only for graphics etc. So i think Apple should promote themselves more for the "ordinary" people and not only for people "like us"...wink

Vista is like Gloria Swanson coming down the stairs at the end of "Sunset Blvd"

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0841797/

All painted up with nowhere to go but down.

Oct 12, 06 - 08:44 am Comment from: nonarKitten

I love this explanation of Windows Vista from a coding site, justifying the operating systems's absurb requirements and abuse of system resources. Here's a quote:

"You have to stop thinking of system memory as a resource and start thinking of it as a a cache."

Uhh, right. The operating system doesn't take 800MB of RAM it provides 1.2GB of system cache to improve the user experience. When will this grotequery end? Honestly, I don't know if OSX is any better though, right now I have all my 2GB used with a 15.3GB page file, and I'm not doing a whole lot...

Oct 12, 06 - 08:48 am Comment from: Drunk Cheney

$399.00 is WAY over priced. I don't care what OS it is. But especially Windows/Visa.

I could probably buy a crappy PC for $200.00 and get the OS that way then pitch the POS PC into the trash.

But that would only happen if I planned on buying Vista - I don't.

Oct 12, 06 - 08:53 am Comment from: Beryllium

I jut went to the C/Net site to watch the video report on Vista. And what assaukted my eyes and ears? Video ads! If MDN ever starts this practice, I will stop visiting this site!

Oct 12, 06 - 08:53 am Comment from: Species 8472

It looks like it was designed by Apple.

To look bad so people will buy Mac OSX.

If I was Microsoft and that was the state of play right now, and it was out to manufacturing 'soon' - I'd have the old brown trousers on, be having sleepless nights (and days) and be looking for a rope and a beam.

It's gonna be a lash-up of cosmic proportions. Hopefully.

Oct 12, 06 - 08:53 am Comment from: Qka

Why people (and the vast majority, no less) put up with Windows is unfathomable.

Not really. Apple dropped the ball, big time, in the mid-to-late-1990's. Microsoft picked it up. We are still living with those decisions.

Change is difficult and expensive. Only when the alternative is cheaper and much better does change happen.

That is what is happening now. OS X is changing things. It will be slow. Be patient. It will happen

Oct 12, 06 - 08:53 am Comment from: LOL

Looks like Bomber has lost a little weight. There's no doubt that his health is robust though.

Love the look the interviewer chick had when he talked about coming and the bone in his mouth. He is such an obnoxious tool. Priceless.

Oct 12, 06 - 08:53 am Comment from: Beryllium

Make that "assaulted", not "assaukted".

Oct 12, 06 - 09:24 am Comment from: jay

XP wasn't ready for prime time either, but that didn't stop M$. Why should this be any different?

Oct 12, 06 - 09:35 am Comment from: Macaday

Vista has 'an interface that looks like the spawn of two drunk inbred Macs who stumbled into some depraved fertility clinic run by Hanna-Barbera'.

Nice description MDN.

Oct 12, 06 - 09:41 am Comment from: critic

"Although I know I live in a country with many retards ( ) it's actually true MDN: many people have no clue when it comes to "operating systems": they still don't know that there is such thing as "another" OS, let alone Mac OSX"

Although it may be difficult for all the nerds on this board to believe it, but most of the general population doesn't even know what an operating system is. They just know they bought a "computer" that runs "programs".

Most of the population is stupid, which seems to very closely correlate with 95% windows market share.

Oct 12, 06 - 09:45 am Comment from: Macaday

This man Ballmer is a complete and utter nutcase... you have to see this video. Even the interviewers are rolling their eyes...!

http://news.com.com/1606-2_3-6124963.html?tag=ne.video.6124945

Microsoft IS finished. It's only a matter of time.

Oct 12, 06 - 09:48 am Comment from: Spark

"Apple dropped the ball, big time, in the mid-to-late-1990's. Microsoft picked it up. We are still living with those decisions.

Not really. The die was cast when IBM licensed rather than purchased the MS-DOS OS for its first PCs. IBM was the king of Business and "Big Iron" computing. As the saying went in those days, "No one ever got fired for buying IBM." And "business" did just that. IBM made MS the darling of business. And because IBM didn't own the OS, MS was free to license it to all the clone makers which spawned the Wintel hegemony. Once MS ripped off Apple's GUI, Apple didn't have chance. They didn't drop the ball... they never really had it.

Oct 12, 06 - 09:59 am Comment from: Macaday

But Sparko, even business is made up of human beings. It's only a matter of time before the CEO's and everyone else sees -and experiences- for themselves that there is a better way...

Then the IT execs will have to start acting and earning their keep, and of course firing all those excessive staff who have to permanently mend and patch Windows...

Oct 12, 06 - 10:03 am Comment from: jay

If I'm not mistaken, IBM did own the first OS for it's PC. Bill Gates brilliantly suckered IBM into selling it back to M$, whhere it became MS-DOS. In any event, IBM had the chance to be the big one in personal computing and ended up making one of the all time business blunders in history.

LOL at the video of Monkey Boy

The CNet interviewer called it: "That will be a new video on the Internet"

That man is a psychopath.

Oct 12, 06 - 10:18 am Comment from: Puttin' On The Ritz

"The Creature" Ballmer:

"Most of our erstwhile industry participants tend to specialize in one thing."

Microsoft's "partners" had better worry about that one. It's a promise that Plays For Sure is only the first of many "innovations" swirling around in the bowl — assuming that The Creature knows the meaning of 'erstwhile.' But jeez, he must because he's so swayve. After listening to him speak French, I'd bet he could order escargot without pronouncing the T. Well, the more things change. . . .

Illustrating four points, he holds up five fingers. I'm almost sure, though, he doesn't throw food on his family. If there's an empty chair to be had.

"I've gotta not be the visionary. . . ." Wow! His counselling sessions are working!

". . . but I do have to be the champion of innovation at Microsoft." Well, the next counselling session will be the first of his visiting-the-shrink "get-real modules."

Oh, jeez. The Creature talked about Microsoft evolving! That sound is his U.S. customer base rushing the exits.

Double WOW!! One of the interviewers, Yvonne Genovese, is VP, Distinguished Analyst. Oh! Imagine! She's not just an analyst. She's aDistinguished analyst. And not just a Distinguished analyst. She's VP and a Distinguished analyst.

I can see why. She's uncovered a new truth! She understands that "we" consume software. I can only hope I have room for it after I consume my car.

To all the other analysts in the world: Give up. You'll never be Distinguished, now. The position's taken, and it's all over. You might as well kill yourselves.

Magic Word: attack. The terrorists have won.

Oct 12, 06 - 10:40 am Comment from: KenC

You may be right. The result was the same.

Vista = Candy Corn Crap!

Oct 12, 06 - 12:07 pm Comment from: Raymond from DC

MDN often suggests we install our "current version of Windows XP" using Boot Camp or Parallels. Unfortunately, many or most bundled copies of XP are usable only on PCs from the same vendor. So I suspect most will NOT be able to use them on a Mac. (If there's a way to do so, I'd like to know.) Shrink-wrapped copies of XP are, of course, a different matter, but how many of us paid $300 or so for such software?

Oct 12, 06 - 12:58 pm Comment from: Ampar

That video of Ballmer on C|NUT was disturbing and nauseating. To paraphrase Steve Martin, "Help him! He spoke French!" The only thing missing was Steve making his buttcheeks talk ala Ace Ventura.

Oct 12, 06 - 01:43 pm Comment from: macPinchi

"Coming and coming and... the bone doesn't drop out of our mouth very easily."

Holy crap. Couple that with "squirting stuff" from Zune to Zune and you really have to wonder about this clown's orientation.

If I was a Windows user, I'd be worried about catching whatever it is Ballmer so obviously has.

Oct 12, 06 - 01:48 pm Comment from: dogfriend

"If I was a Windows user, I'd be worried about catching whatever it is Ballmer so obviously has."

Mental illness? I don't think that it is communicable. Also, a fair amount of Windows users seem to already have it. wink

Oct 12, 06 - 01:54 pm Comment from: Holy Mackerel

Viruses, Viruses, Viruses!

Has anyone tested Blister to see if the current viruses cannot penetrate it from within (e.g. email) or without (e.g. firewall)? Surely the Win-reviewers would check this first, but I have heard nothing about it except that it is annoying in security for the users.

I imagine it is full of holes like XP, so the real benefit of waiting six years is wasted time. Tell me I'm wrong.

'The CNet interviewer called it: "That will be a new video on the Internet" '

I couldn't catch what Ballmer said after that because of the audience noise (if it wasn't a fake audience). Can anyone figure out what he said? He must have referred to the Monkey Boy vid.

Oct 12, 06 - 04:45 pm Comment from: NoMacforYou

If I may say so, Leopard isnt exactly launch material. Vista seems more stable than OS X.4 on my Mac Book Pro...Say what you will but although Vista isnt ready for PT, it sure as hell is in better shape than the WWDC seed of 10.5 and even outperforms OS X.4 on apple's own hardware..Sad, but true..

Oct 12, 06 - 04:51 pm Comment from: BTW

Love the take MDN, You sound like a used car salesman who couldnt sell anything to save your life..Good job, right up there with crApple's new "Ads" (if thats what they are), Infact - your pathetic attempt to get me to buy a Mac has spawned a question..Should I even consider buying a Mac to replace my superior PC hardware? I Dont "think" so..If you are so desperate to "make that sale" then i probably should "take the plung" OS X is great, but not "great" enough...

Oct 12, 06 - 05:03 pm Comment from: dogfriend

"I couldn't catch what Ballmer said after that because of the audience noise (if it wasn't a fake audience). Can anyone figure out what he said? He must have referred to the Monkey Boy vid."

i think Leopard deserves a huge marketing blitz by Apple soon.

Oct 12, 06 - 11:41 pm Comment from: Person

The Compatibility Wizard is found in Rc2 i tested it. Its found in Help and Support. The guy was searching in Start Menu. He didnt thought to try typing in Help and Support. So I dont know why cnet is saying that microsoft dropped the Compatibility Wizard in Rc2 ok. Maybe they dont know what the hec they are talking about ok.

Oct 13, 06 - 03:41 pm Comment from: Jatt

The Vista Rc2 took 20 mins to install fresh copy. I am running 2 and half years old pc. Its P4 3.00GHZ, 1Gb of Ram, and 256Mb video card Ati and on Intel Motherboard. Its running faster then Rc1 ok. Its less Memory Hog in Rc2 now. The vista is Stable so far. It has been running for few days without no restarts at all. And the Compatibility Wizard is found in Rc2 5744 Build. Just Right click on Program and Properties its there. Another Method is under Help and Support section and type Compatibility Wizard you will find it there. I dont know why cnet is saying its Missing from Rc2. The Video Glitch i dont experience no glitch they might be using generic video card it seems. And the OS is still in Beta Stages not final code. Few people think that Rc2 means its out of Beta Stages. There just wrong ok.

Windows 95, 98, Me. I can believe it crashed with blue screens of death for no reason. I have Experienced it. But since XP was launched the Reliablity was Improved and with XP Sp2 its more stable XP. And Vista is more Stable then XP. Since its build on windows 2003 server code. And my system has been crashfree since XP sp2. If you have enough memory like 1Gb ram extra memory helps. Also Theres a thing called maintanaice. If you take care of computer. The system will be be fine. Like check for file system errors and bad sectors every month for errors on hard drive. And keep the Firewall on. The Blaster was gotton into pc throught a Port. If people kept the firewall on. They would not gotton a Blaster Virus. Finally i would not say any OS is Perfect even Mac or Linux. Because Humans are not Perfect in the first place either. And you expect the OS to be Perfect LOL.

Also Mac OS is good to. I wont say Mac Os is anyway better then windows. Because i have used Macs in schools and crashed the macs in 10 mins. The person who says virus-free macs. Are you kidding me. I can see that macs have less viruses but you cant say they have Zero Viruses. Then why Companies makes anti-virus Software for Macs. They should not make no anti-virus programs for macs. If they was Virus Free. Also i only had 1 virus since 1999 in Pc. I never got a virus more then 1 ok.

Now why i dont like Macs: I just dont like the desktop interface of Macs. And you cant upgrade parts in imac. Now u can in MacPro which is $2500 to buy to expensive. And if you think macs OS cost $129. In the Long run that Os has costed you over $129. Like for example you already spend $2500 that included the Os Price i guess. As Pcs you can have crashProof Pc under $1500. If you know how run a Pc Properly. Also not a lot of software available for Macs. Maybe in the Future there might be ok.

Also why apple is full of Lies. There creating false ads. Like this mac actor says i can make movies and the pc person said i can do Word, Piechart. Thats just wrong. You can do anything on Pc like music editing, Listen to music edit videos you name it and design web sites using Micromedia 7 or 8 or any 3rd party software. So finally its a user preference whether they like Macs or PC. Both are good in there own unique ways. Bye take care
