CNET reviews Apple’s new 24-inch iMac: Editor’s Choice, Best all-in-one on the market
Friday, May 02, 2008 - 09:10 AM EDT

CNET reviews Apple's newest iMac, released Monday:

"A bump to the frontside bus and a smidge more L2 cache can safely be classified as a minor update. But even slightly improved specifications, when they come at a lower price than those they replace, are appreciated," Matthew Elliott reports for CNET Reviews.

"Last September, we tested the highest-end 24-inch model, which carried a baseline price of $2,299 and featured Intel's 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme X7900 processor. We're happy to report that the new $1,799 iMac sped past the previous model in CNET Labs, though it features roughly the same specs: a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of faster 800MHz RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a midrange ATI Radeon graphics card. What's changed is that this model uses a Penryn-class processor that serves up 6MB of L2 cache to the 4MB the previous Merom-class chip provided, while operating on a faster 1,066MHz frontside bus--up from 800MHz," Elliott reports.

"Given its strong application performance and competitive price, we give the iMac a strong recommendation as a mainstream desktop in addition to being best in class in the all-in-one niche," Elliott reports.

"A slight bump to the specifications for the same price in addition to a much appreciated option to upgrade the graphics means the 24-inch iMac keeps the Editors' Choice it earned last year when the brushed-aluminum-and-glass design was first introduced," Elliott reports.

I will happily keep my Dell, thank you very much.

It is so fast, I even easily beat the MAC users to the post.

Calling all MAC users; what happened to all of you? My fantastic Vista machine is working so well, I have time to post here after getting my work done so much faster that if I used a MAC.

Your Potential. Our Passion.

Alas, my 24" iMac is now last generation after only five months. But it is a great computer (other than the little track ball gumming up), and my family loves it. If you can get by with a desktop or can afford two computers, the iMac is worth your consideration.

funny... everyone I know that has an iMac loves the thing.... and with the exception of zune tang... I never heard anyone say a nice thing about vista..lol

May 02, 08 - 09:25 am Comment from: KingMel

The 'Tangster was out surfing for Vista driver updates and XP upgrade instructions and go a jump on Mac users on the MDN forums wink

Glad to see you so feisty today, 'Tangster!

Are you kidding?

I love Vista!

It's is one of the best things to happen for the Mac and OS X since Windows ME.

And now, I eagerly await the beauty and elegance of Windows 7.

Happened to me last night, and I love it!

A client of mine, was spewing about his new lap top with Vista, I explained he could take it and have it upgraded to XP, which he now plans to do.

last night he was at our house, and I was showing him the features of leopard, Time machine just blew him away, (I deleted files he had sent me several days ago, then retrieved them) .

But, the best part was when he asked,"where is the rest of the computer"

Zune Tang is the MDN version of Operation Chaos.

(Note - This is not a political statement, so no political responses.)

<i>Your Frustration. Our Profit. Microsoft.<i>

LOL. That's funny.

Dang it. I forgot to close my HTML tag. MDN, could you add better posting options instead of manually adding the tags.

May 02, 08 - 09:46 am Comment from: jeddog

Zune, definitely don't get rid of your Dell. They make great doorstops.

It is so entertaining to watch the democratic party implode. Keep up the good work dems.

May 02, 08 - 10:14 am Comment from: Ampar

To Kendall:

My wrinkled, old midget flipped and cartwheeled over a huge bowl of rancid, lumpy gravy this morning.

Thanks. I had forgotten that it was Non-sequitur Day.

CNET is not normally Mac friendly. But in the case of the iMac, they have no choice.

Apple: Your excitement, our reality.

May 02, 08 - 10:26 am Comment from: LinuxGuyAndMacProdigalSon

I want one and will get it soon, along with Time Capsule. I will upgrade to the 3 GHz version and the Nvidia graphics board and will put in more third party memory.

What a sweet machine!

Should I give up hope that I will be able to buy my iMac with a blu-ray drive. I really want to make HD movies for Blu-Ray

May 02, 08 - 10:51 am Comment from: Your Mom BluRay

Today's Tangster is unregistered.

Will the "real" Zune Tang please stand up?

Of course, I'm unreg'd. Do I have to stand up too?

May 02, 08 - 11:11 am Comment from: alansky

Zune Tang is hallucinating again. He thinks his pukey little Dull is a new titanium iMac with 30" screen. Take it easy on the kool-aid, Zune! You know you don't have enough working brain cells to handle that stuff.

May 02, 08 - 11:21 am Comment from: Jubei

Wow Zune Tongued with a three in a row. I can't believe his DELL didn't crash with his furious activity. wink

May 02, 08 - 11:23 am Comment from: Jubei

The iMacs just keep getting better and better. The new ones look so nice, specially with the reduced Jay Leno chin. I expect to see it reduced more and hopefully thinner. Since all Macs comes with iSight, I wonder what percentage people do video conferencing nowadays. It's certainly more stable and enjoyable than doing it on a Windows POS.

May 02, 08 - 12:14 pm Comment from: Tosser

I agree with Zune Tang!

May 02, 08 - 12:27 pm Comment from: livingMac

Zune Tang. If your goal is to get people to feel envious of your Dell I say Good Luck with That. Maybe you should also get People to buy big SUV's with Gas at $5 dollars a gallon.

May 02, 08 - 12:29 pm Comment from: Lurker_PC

What was surprising to me was that according to the benchmark results, the Mac Mini did not come in last in any of the tests.

Peace.

May 02, 08 - 12:54 pm Comment from: Mother Tosser

You would....tosser!

May 02, 08 - 02:02 pm Comment from: Spark

I've always purchased the biggest, baddest Mac Pros to use at work and my home office. With trepidation I bought the 2.8GHz Extreme version iMac last year for my home. I've been very happy with it. Really good machines.

May 02, 08 - 02:38 pm Comment from: KenC

That wasn't the real Zune, he's normally not that funny. That was Ampar pretending to be Zune.

Your Investment, Our Profit, Microsoft.

May 02, 08 - 02:56 pm Comment from: Ampar

KenC: Wrong. I have never been ZT.

May 02, 08 - 03:01 pm Comment from: Ampar

I wonder if the iMac wannabe, the Gateway One sold more than one.

May 02, 08 - 03:03 pm Comment from: Ampar

And questions should end in a question mark. Oh well.

May 02, 08 - 03:44 pm Comment from: montex

I think Zune Tang is really weird.

May 02, 08 - 05:34 pm Comment from: MastaSHake11
