CNET tests iPhone EDGE vs. Wi-Fi speeds, finds (shocker) Wi-Fi much faster than EDGE
Thursday, July 12, 2007 - 11:06 AM EDT

CNET Labs spent two days of timing Apple iPhone's download speeds between AT&T's EDGE network and Wi-Fi. "Tests were run at different points throughout the day to account for changes in network bandwidth, and the iPhone was reformatted after each download to ensure that Safari's browser cache wouldn't skew results," Donald Bell reports for CNET's Crave.

CNET's test results found that EDGE averaged a download time of 15.69 minutes for a 9.4MB file vs. Wi-Fi's 1.18 minutes. In other words, iPhone's Wi-Fi connection is on average about 13 times faster than EDGE.

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: In related news, water is wet. We've found EDGE is wonderful for stimulating conversation with people to whom we're showing the iPhone's Internet capabilities. It usually gives us just enough time to show off the casing front, sides and back while explaining the ring/silent, volume up/down, sleep/wake/on/off, and home buttons, plus allow for chit chat about the weather. Using iPhone with Wi-Fi is a whole different world; think "modem" vs. "broadband." In some areas, EDGE works well enough, but it can never be described as "fast." Thankfully, iPhone finds and switches to open Wi-Fi service whenever it's available.

I've also hear that a Lamborghini Murcielago is faster than a big-wheel. I smell a law suit.

Does the iPhone come with a 56k modem?

LOL

Jul 12, 07 - 11:15 am Comment from: Dave Smith

This is the main reason why i have put off purchasing the iPhone.

They will eventually make a faster network?, they aren't making a faster one anytime soon. Or are they?

Jul 12, 07 - 11:19 am Comment from: kennyyy921

wow... edge is SLOWER than Wi-Fi??????!! NO WAY!

i didnt think it was possible.. thanks C-Net =)

Jul 12, 07 - 11:22 am Comment from: therepguy

I don't get it - everyone know that wi-fi is fast than edge - even AT&T;'s enhanched version of Edge.

And everyone knows that the iPhone looks for and attaches itself to the fastest avalivable network.

cNet is just following it's normal butch mode!

When are these guys going to get off their rant when it comes to Apple?

Bottom line - Apple makes the best product on the market and cNet is still stuck in MS and the PC World - a world that's getting small er ever day and cNet doesn't get it - will the last one standing over there at cNet please turn out the lights when you go home for the last time!

Jul 12, 07 - 11:22 am Comment from: RC

Wow, what would we ever do without CNET around to tell us this kind of stuff??

Jul 12, 07 - 11:24 am Comment from: WilderBu

Just got my iPhone and for some bizarre reason edge is pretty fast in La. Haven't had a single problem loading youtube videos all start streaming within 10 sec.
I did have dialup until 2003 though, so anything faster is good enough for me.

Jul 12, 07 - 11:26 am Comment from: whatever

It is really amazing how people complain about the EDGE network being slow when they didn't even have the capability to cruise the web in a decent way before the iPhone even on the 3G networks - I'm sorry the EDGE works just fine and there will only be improvements in the future..

Jul 12, 07 - 11:29 am Comment from: ipodboy

I have my WiFi network running off Dial up modem and it is no faster than EDGE - I don't know what these fools are talking about..

Jul 12, 07 - 11:30 am Comment from: DellDude

Guess it would matter what connection the WiFi is connected to..

Jul 12, 07 - 11:31 am Comment from: realist

Actually, it is interesting to know exactly how much of a difference there is. Sure, it's obvious that there is going to be a difference, but the actual rate is useful.

I'm not going to be satisfied until my iPhone has flipbook capabilities.

And a Visualizer for iTunes to calm me down when I'm driving at night on the expressway during a bad storm.

Jul 12, 07 - 11:34 am Comment from: DLMeyer

If the iPhone does an automatic check and switch to WiFi, how could they tell which they were using? OK, they were downloading a large file - possibly hoping to report that the iPhone could not deal with a "standard-size file" - but, is there a lock-out built in? Yes ... it was obvious there was a difference, but how would Joe-on-the-street know?
Don't own one, don't plan to own one, would sell it if given one, it doesn't fit MY needs. But, then, I don't use half the "features" in my entry-level-two-years-ago cell phone - the one forced on me by economics rather than need. I don't plan on getting a Lamborghini, either. wink

How can you complain, before you had nothing on your phone now you have constant connection to the internet on your phone, tell me is something faster than nothing!!!

Jul 12, 07 - 11:40 am Comment from: limey

CNET, obviously losing web traffic, needs to boost rankings. This is the best they can come up with?

What happened to all the good journalists? Most places seem to be populated by those that barely passed their journalism finals.

iPhone Safari + Edge = Better web experience than any other cell phone.

Jul 12, 07 - 11:43 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

Because the little icon in the upper left tells you what network you're on. "E" for Edge and the AirPort icon for WiFi.

JQ, you apparently missed the point. For some, the internet capability is a significant factor in whether they decide to purchase the iPhone. Heck, even some of Apple's ads are entirely devoted to showing off the internet capabilities, so it's quite important to some people. Before spending a bunch of money on a product, some people actually like to know how well it will work for what they need it for. If someone wants to buy the iPhone in order to use the internet but Wi-Fi isn't widely available, then the iPhone may not be the best decision at this time. This CNet article merely helps people make that decision.

In Dallas/Fort Worth I have found EDGE to be far faster than everyone else is claiming it to be (that is - it is not as fast as WiFi, but I can browse Google maps while riding the train - a rather rural part of rthe DFW metroplex suburbs.)

Mr. Peabody, why do you ask that? Did you know the average difference in download times and the degree to which WiFi is faster than EDGE prior to reading the article?

Jul 12, 07 - 12:05 pm Comment from: anthony007

There's no way I'm buying the iphone until it comes out as G3. I am not giving AT&T;60 bucks a month such slow speed. If the monthly rate were 30 I'd reconsider. Dvorak is right that apple's move for letting AT&t;be sole provider is puzzling. They could have sold a lot more phones if it was not tied to one carrier.

What is more important, in the long term?

3G [4G, 5G etc] or wifi?

Jul 12, 07 - 12:19 pm Comment from: Matrix3

This is more FUD against Apple's iPhone.

Of course Wifi is faster than Edge, IT'S also FASTER than 3G - so what's the big deal.

This is just another hit-piece to try to keep people from buying the iPhone.

@ anthony007 - the data plan for AT&T;is unlimited so you don't get any additional charges whether its faster or slower. And BTW you're getting access to the web on the go as oppsed to not getting it or limited with the other Smartphones out there. And yes, I had a Samsung Blackjack and it sucked looking at the web.

It is amazing to me how WiFi is now a speed - It is only as good as its connection to the internet - I can set up a WiFi network attached to a 56k modem and it will be slower than EDGE - Use the proper terminology "Connected to WiFi connected to a cable modem or T1 Line or DSL" not just WiFi - Freaking idiots..

Jul 12, 07 - 12:34 pm Comment from: whatever

I seem to think that EDGE is moderately fast. I don't see it a being so slow. I use it just fine and tested it on cnet and got over 100 Kbps as my speed. Not super fast but not 56K. I do experience casual bumps in connectivity but I can certainly surf away from WiFi with it. My problem is the unstable Google Maps not EDGE.

I was first in line at the La Encantada Store to get an iPhone and did a review here is the link

Jul 12, 07 - 12:38 pm Comment from: Cubert

The iPhone's automatic switching from EDGE to wi-fi is absolutely freaking out all the Winblows users who are using the Macintosh platform for the first time. No one can imagine that capability with any Winblows device.

When the first software update comes out and people's iPhones start working even better and have new functionality, the landslide will begin. Most people are used to Winblows updates slowing down their computer. This will be a shocking breath of fresh air1

That was pretty funny about your wife. Got a serious laugh out of me.

Thanks

I do have to agree many people have not tried 3G and dont seriously surf with their phone. Even with the iPhone I dont seriously surf. One because I know I can't view the pages as well as my HD Cinema Display does and because I dont use a phone for that purpose. I think the internet on the iPhone is great and light years above any other phone web experience I have had. I used to own a Sidekick 1, 2, and 3 and a Helio. The iPhone is way better. as a phone and as an internet device. The complaints mostly come from a condition I like to call "iPHONE ENVY"

People automatically raise the bar when it comes to Apple, but rather than expecting better than what they have, they expect better than what is possible, and then they whine and throw fits about it ten ways from Tuesday. This is rampant immaturity.

CNet obviously is granted by the Community of Scientists Dedicated to Revealing the Obvious (CSDRO). I'll bet they get some mad money dumbing down the populace so that they will be ever-more receptive to the Community's next brainless revelation.

Jul 12, 07 - 01:22 pm Comment from: shen

no doubt, people do raise the bar when they see the Apple name...

if this was the Zune phone cnet would compare its network speed to 14.4 dialup and crow about how fast it is!

Jul 12, 07 - 01:45 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

ChrissieOne, Yeah. They keep trying to tell me there are icons on my LG. Stuff to tell me what's happening. My wife pointed out the "No Service" icon yesterday while we were waiting to give blood in the library. Service was fine outside!
Interesting ... she calls me to get help with her Mac, or for her friend's Windows (Eew!) machine, and can barely manage getting her v-mail, but she speaks phone icons? Very strange!

Oh. Yeah. Thanks for the info. Not that I'll remember ... (doh!) wink
