CNN: Don’t eat your Apple iPhone, iPod, or their earbuds
Friday, November 09, 2007 - 01:08 PM EST

"If CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta had his way, when you unwrapped your new iPod or iPhone this Christmas, there might be the following warning label:

SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Ingesting or inhaling your iPhone or iPod earbuds may be hazardous to your health.

Poor reports, "The November 9 CNN “American Morning” warned of the dangers of iPods. The screen read 'IPOD & IPHONE DANGER – CAN THEY HURT YOU?'"

"Gupta reported that the cord connecting the earbuds to your iPod contain phthalates, according to the litigious Center for Environmental Health. Phthalates are a substance often used for increasing the flexibility of plastics, but according to an article on macnn.com phthalates 'may hinder the sexual development of mammals," Poor reports. "But even Gupta did not say that using an iPod or an iPhone as intended would be dangerous... 'So the immediate takeaway is, don’t eat your iPhone or your earbuds?' asked CNN co-anchor John Roberts. 'Or breathe it in,' Gupta replied."

First post!

Uh, yeah, and tie your shoe laces. Brush your teeth. Wash your hands.

Really, the government needs to legislate common sense. I think it is high time we get serious about this.

And, don't forget, idiot is a bad word to describe some one who is other wise a MORON.

Nov 09, 07 - 01:13 pm Comment from: Hungry Hungry Hippy

But they're so tasty!

Nov 09, 07 - 01:13 pm Comment from: Woody

Must be a slow news day at CNN or something.

Nov 09, 07 - 01:16 pm Comment from: 7over

Incredible! Why is common sense seemingly so uncommon these days?
How would you breath an iPhone or an earbud?

Nov 09, 07 - 01:16 pm Comment from: Quad Core

"Must be a slow news day at CNN or something."

Or a normal day of promoting fluff over substance.

The apple price is falling....

Dear God make the bleeding stop.

Nov 09, 07 - 01:20 pm Comment from: cptnkirk

Jeesh!

I knew the world was heading to a terminal state when Starbucks had to warn customers that the contents of a coffee cup may be hot. Now this!!!

Have we completely forgotten the concept of personal responsibility: you eat an earbud=you reap the consequences?!?! It's no one else's responsibility.

Grow up!

Nov 09, 07 - 01:20 pm Comment from: Hummer

Next piece of news from 'Dr' Gupta (MBBS in Quackery): Don't bend over and sniff your balls while playing tennis. I mean why would anyone with a sane mind want to eat his iPhone/iPod earbud? What a nutter.

Nov 09, 07 - 01:21 pm Comment from: ApplePi

stupidest. story. ever.

Nov 09, 07 - 01:22 pm Comment from: macwowee

how stupid, have we really gotten to be this dumb? Like I always said, if it's a slow news day, take the day off. idiots.

Nov 09, 07 - 01:23 pm Comment from: Gandalf

No news is good news as the saying goes, so they give you no news on the news so that you feel good about it. Better not say anything bad on the news, people might not like it and turn to another channel, be entertaining instead, people like that.

Meanwhile in real life ...........

"The apple price is falling...."

Just the broader markets and the reaction to Benanke yesterday. The drop isn't Apple specific. Their fundamentals are still strong.
Look at it as a buying opportunity.

Nov 09, 07 - 01:26 pm Comment from: Tempus Fugit

uhhh.... i dunno... people have tried blending iPods. the next logical step would be making smoothies out of them. so i guess it would be prudent to say....

Do Not Ingest iPod/iPhone Smoothies.

Nov 09, 07 - 01:34 pm Comment from: Scarbro

Gupta's an idiot... this isn't the first time he's made these type of dubious reports where the facts are just vague assertions or flat out wrong. Remember the big dust up between him and Michael Moore during Sicko's release?

Nov 09, 07 - 01:35 pm Comment from: what about kids

you people make it sound like cnn is stupid to report this, but what about the lead paint in kids toy issue? Obiously kids shouldn't be eating dolls and other toys, but the reality is, they do. My daugter puts things in her mouth all the time. So, that means, she would put iPod ear phones in her mouth, or very close to her nose and not even realize she shouldn't be doing it. So you say, "well don't let your kid have it." It's funny though how many things my daughter kids a hold of that I don't want her to have.

We keep all our household cleaners in cabinets where she can't get to them because we know how dangerous they are. But, I would never guess that a pair of earphones was that dangerous, and they shouldn't be so.

Time to buy more shares... unless you think the world is gone tomorrow.. If that, then enjoy the last few hours before the meteor hits!

I had a client ask me what he should do because Apple's shares had dropped to $65.00 a share. I told him to buy more.

Hmmmm... be of good cheer. It means you can get more for less!

Nov 09, 07 - 01:39 pm Comment from: BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots

Moore -- ostensibly a United States citizen -- was forbidden from traveling to Cuba. Gupta was right then. Not only that, but Sicko is a freaking joke. Cuba's health care is the envy of the Western world? I've got oceanfront property in Colorado for you if you're going to swallow that. As for now, Gupta is wrong. He still has more brains than Michael Moore does. Then again, so does your average glue stick.

Nov 09, 07 - 01:43 pm Comment from: MuzoInOz

phthalates 'may hinder the sexual development of mammals

Microsofties, this is utter bullsheet. Resume sucking on iPod earbuds to remove excess wax or just to be fashionable.

All of Redmond is doing it.

Nov 09, 07 - 02:01 pm Comment from: Chris

So, does this mean that it's safe to eat other MP3 players and their associated earbuds - just so long as it doesn't have an Apple logo on it?

Perhaps the Apple logo, being a depiction of an edible object, opens the doors to such nonsense.

Nov 09, 07 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Bob

Fact:
George Bush will leave office the following:

1. The worst unemployment record in history. (Keep in mind, Dept. of Labor only reports new unemployment insurance claims to calculate the numbers. When a person runs out of unemployment insurance, they are NOT counted in the remaining numbers.

2. Worst stock market performance in histoy. (Yes, you Republican fools, when Clinton left the Dow was at 12,000. Almost 8 years later, we are barely above 13,000.)

3. Worst environmental record (he hires a mining lobbylist to head the Mine Safety Dept., which stops enforcing fines of mine operators. This is why we're having mine collapses.)

4. Worst violence record. (Under Clinton, violence was down dramatically; under Bush, it's going up)

5. Worst home market since the Depression.

6. Worst performance of the dollar, ever.

7. Most deficits ever, in real terms and in inflation-adjusted terms.

8. Worst war performance ever. (Iraq has lasted longer than World War 2. What have we gained so far, other than make Iran and al-Qaeda more powerful? Nothing. Clinton presided over the wars in Eastern Europe that stopped genocide, and we had not one U.S. death. NOT ONE.

There are quotes of Sean Hannity, claiming the war in Bosnia was a fraud, to help Clinton's image, and that "the President has no plan." "He's going to get our boys killed." Guess what, sucker, we won the war! And not a single US soldier died!!

9. Wages going down. Meanwhile, payroll taxes have gone up. And the dollar is down over 10%. Guess what, Republicans, your precious tax cut has helped no one! All Americans, due to the dollar's fall, have gotten a 10% paycut!!

10. Oil at an all-time high. Nuff said.

11. Foreign policy blunders like claiming we love democracy in Iraq - yet, we support nothing but dictators and strongmen in the Middle East -- in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, UAE, Yemen, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt.

12. Nuclear foreign policy disasters - we try to stop Iran from getting nukes, yet we appease North Korea who already has one!

13. LOL Eight years later, we have given up on even find Osama. What a joke.

14. Took us to war based on lies. (Despite the Plame thing, the documents re: Iraq WERE PROVEN TO BE FORGERIES. AND WE HAVE NEVER INVESTIGATED WHO FORGED THEM.

15. Katrina. While Harry Connick and Sean Penn were saving lives, our government claimed they couldn't get in the city that first five days. LOL Even John Travolta loaded up his personal 747 and flew down there with supplies.

16. Broken military. Don't believe me, read Military Times and listen to the generals. FACT: The Pentagon is looking into letting new recruits into the military who have FELONY CRIMINAL RECORDS, INCLUDING DRUG ABUSE CONVICTIONS.

Bush and Cheney committed treason by outing a CIA spy. Whether you believe she was covert or not - if a low level FBI agent leaked her name and agent status to say, Iran, and let them know Plame was investigating Iran/Iraq nuclear efforts via a front company named Brewster Jennings they would BE TRIED FOR TREASON AND ESPIONAGE.

Can you imagine the outrage, if Hillary and Al Gore leaked the name of a CIA agent during the Bosnian war? And that they leaked the name of this CIA agent to a liberal writer at the NY Times, because the agent dared to say Clinton lied about the war in Bosnia?!!

Imagine that Hillary was caught saying "she's fair game" about the agent?

Then, what if Congress and the liberal media was caught parsing words by saying, "well, the CIA agent wasn't covert at the time so it doesn't matter!"

And imagine if say, Sandy Berger was the guy who helped leak this stuff and he was convicted but Bill Clinton pardons him right before he goes to jail?!!!

Can you imagine the vein-busting outrage by the Republicans? Certainly, there would be an attempt on his life... And he would most certainly be impeached and they would have tried Clinton for treason AND hung the death penalty out there as a possibility.

My guess is that if you chewed up and swallowed a pair of earbuds, the last thing you should be concerned about is some chemical in the plastic.

Metal shards passing through your system anyone?

Nov 09, 07 - 02:21 pm Comment from: Gandalf

Shouldn't there be a health warning about eating food from MacDonalds, or Wal-Mart. No that would jeopardize corporate sponsorship. Better go to Hollywood (Supersize Me) or the funnies to be informed. But it's not your food they say, it's that you are don't get enough exercise, so go sign up at the gym, use their expensive equipment (like running machines!!) and buy some Nike sneakers.

Yes the funny thing is that viewers of the Daily Show and Colbert Report are much better informed than viewers of CNN, and others (Fox is near the bottom grin)

The extent of Americans’ misperceptions vary significantly depending on their source of news

Can't travel to Cuba? Part of that is because the Cubans do do somethings better and it's not good for good US citizens to know that the commies can do anything well. Health care in Cuba, don't blindly trust Moore or anyone, do your own research. Cuba running a virtually oil free economy during an embargo, the 'corporate sponsor' really wouldn't like that, best not let any good US citizen know about it.

Think that Microsoft selling Zunes (I paraphrase) for loads of money is a one-off, no, most every industry has their Microsoft. Why do you think Bill Gates has diversified in to healthcare, it's more profitable even than software. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation - just a tax efficient way of remaining in control and reaping the profits.

Anyone know what happens if you ingest or inhale a Zune?

.....other than your crap is brown.

24 hour a day cable news channels are contributing to a steep decrease in average intelligence and ability to think with nuance, and a steep increase in fear, uncritical partisanship and jingoism.

News has ceased to be about reporting the facts. This is going to get worse before it gets better.

OK so I have been constantly licking my iPod Touché' wink - I stole it in France when Scotland Yard was busy investigating the Dead Princess Diaries. It was easy all I did was offer to trade a Zuné for a IPhoné for a iPod Touché and all was well.

even received a French iTunes Store Gift Card as a thank you for being so clever of a thief...

Nov 09, 07 - 02:43 pm Comment from: Constitutionalist

"Bush and Cheney committed treason by outing a CIA spy."

No, they did not. Treason in the United States is defined in constitution - the only crime to be defined in that document - as follows:

"Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."

Bush and Cheney may be guilty of High Crimes and Misdemeanors (for which they could be, and should be, impeached).

But in no sense can they be said to have "levy war against" the United States, or to "adhere to their Enemies" or "give them Aid and Comfort".

A CIA agent is not the United States. Exposing his or her identity may (or may not) be a criminal act -- see 50 U.S.C. § 421–426 -- but whatever it is, it is not treason, at least as defined in the constitution and laws of the United States.

Nov 09, 07 - 03:16 pm Comment from: The 84 Mac Guy

You guys are all missing the point. People apparently are trying to eat iPods and iPhones because they are called Apples. Distinguishing between a Yellow Delicious, Braeburn, and an iPod is not easy you know. They all look so much alike. That is why CNN feels the need to run this type of article.

So the bottom line is: don't eat you iPod, but you can stuff a Zune up your ass.

Nov 09, 07 - 04:14 pm Comment from: Gordon

Bob's long tirade of political list is a bore - this isn't a political forum - and some of the points are just as unfounded as Microsoft's claim of stability and security.

Presidents don't control the spending habits or borrowers of consumers. Buying a Zune player, like agreeing to a loan with a variable rate is stupid and not under the realm of responsibility of the president.

Bob, buy and Mac and start reading as to why there is economic problems, and as for the war - no one admits this: after 9/11 there hasn't been an attack anywhere yet. It's porous at the border or even at the mall. Why no attack? Because everyone know that Bush is crazy enough to bomb the BLUE SCREEN out of you no matter who you are. You're safe to voice your opinions, try that in China, Iran and see where that gets you and your family.

My dad suffered in China, and Bob you lived too long in America to realize a few political disagreements has clouded the optismistic light of this country: freedom.

I made that post the day this story came out: don't eat your iPhone or iPod, and you'll be fine. I do appreciate the anchor who called Gupta out on the story and put the "danger" in its place.

The other thing no one points out: most of these studies in rodents involve given them chemicals in ways in which we would never use them. Not that we couldn't absorb them by some other method, but the link is pretty thin.
