Computerworld reviews Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro: ‘Solid-as-a-rock’
Thursday, July 09, 2009 - 09:13 AM EST

Apple Store"Apple again has three MacBook Pro models to choose from: this newly renamed 13-in. MacBook Pro, the popular 15-in. version and the larger 17-in. model," Ken Mingis reports for Computerworld. "Best of all, the change comes with price reductions across the lineup -- the MacBook Pro line now starts at US$1,199."

Mingis reports, "With the latest update, the smaller Pro models not only get processor speed bumps, they also get a major improvement in battery life, an SD card slot, a FireWire 800 port, a better LED screen and, debuting in the entry-level version, Apple's highly regarded backlit keyboard."

"Overall, Apple has taken what was already a highly successful, feature-rich laptop, given it a new name, upgraded the hardware, added a better screen and a new SD card slot -- and dropped prices across the line," Mingis reports. "The combination of lower prices, better hardware and solid-as-a-rock design should entice both consumers and enterprise buyers, even in these financially tight times."

With Microsoft telling people to look at the Mac and all the PC Mags & Review sites says that Macs are the best bargain and best Notebook you can buy. Apple might break so records even in these economically challenging days. The Message is clear the best deal in computers is the Mac. And if you watch the MS Laptop hunter Ads even Microsoft thinks so.

Apple just needs to beef up their Ads for Mac vs PC with a few more zingers. Perhaps about Windows 7 being just the same OS Core as Vista (I'd be hammering this one), It's upgrade pricing, the fact the you can't upgrade from XP to Windows 7 directly (you have to wipe and install or upgrade to Vista first) and the mess of confusing upgrade version options (I loved the old "Choose a Vista" Ad).

I think a get a mac ad with PC upgrading by changing his sport coat for one that looks identical to the one he just removed --- except the buttons are different or some other minor detail would be funny.

Jul 09, 09 - 08:49 am Comment from: KingMel

@iSteve
That's a good one. The first coat should have a big 'V' on it, and the second one a '7'. Mac could ask 'What's going on?" as PC switches sport coats. PC would say, "Just trying on my new operating system...feels pretty much the same, but looks a little better." Mac responds with something along the line, "The new MacOS, Snow Leopard, is a significant upgrade to an already great operating system that focuses on security, stability and speed. And it's full 64-bit. (etc.)"

Jul 09, 09 - 08:51 am Comment from: KingMel

And it should end, "And Macs running Intel processors enable you to install and run Windows and Windows applications, as well...if you really want to."

I have to agree, my wife and I have had ours for about a week. This little 13 inch kicks ass. Funny, my wife thought being married she would never get a 13 incher. I always told her, " Hey, I got half of what you need, just give me half of what I need."

I love my wife.

@KingMel

Even better, in the ad Mac should try on the coat and say, "yeah, I can wear it too, but it doesn't look as good on me as it does on you."

I hope win 7 kicks a$$. Competition is good. If win 7 proves to be a secure and stable operating system (vista core or no) and slows down the tide of people streaming into the apple store, Apple will be forced to innovate and compete just a little harder in the form of more features, better specifications and maybe even lower prices.

Who knows, maybe they may even release a headless mac for a competitive price. I've got a bunch of pc friends who confess that they'd like to try mac, but don't want a desktop with mobile components like the mini and iMac, and can't justify spending thousands on a mac pro. Yeah, it's improbable, but I can dream, can't I?

@Demon

Actually, this is ComputerWorld, required reading for the IT crowd.

This is an important review because of that. This is not a review in a hobbyist mag.

@ Clyde,

My 1st Gen Intel iMac will be in the shop today getting a new hard drive put in. In the meantime this new MacBook Pro 13" will be steading it's place. This machine is faster at everything so they can take as long as they want fixing the desktop.
If your friends really wanted an Apple machine they would have one. Just let them know that since they probably only use their machines for games and porn, it really isn't that important to Apple or us in the community for them to switch.

Thanks, Jarrett

@Clyde - What makes a component a "laptop component"? Lighter weight, smaller form factor, less power consumption?

I'm carrying around a collection of "laptop components", 4GB memory, 500GB hard drive, 4.5 lbs and don't need to be connected to power for 4 or 5 hours at a time. Haven't noticed any performance deficiency.

If I moved this collection of components into a desk top computer that was the size of 5 CD jewel boxes, or into an all-in-one desk top that hid all of this gadgetry in the area behind the screen of the display, what would be the problem?

..."Apple will be forced to innovate and compete just a little harder in the form of more features, better specifications and maybe even lower prices."...

You clearly aren't familiar with what motivates Apple. One thing that does not is its competition. We would have never seen the iPhone if it were the competition that motivated them. Or the iMac, or the MacBook Air. Apple operates on Jobsian obsession of attention to every single bleeping detail and its function. Eliminating as many unnecessary things as possible, be them screws in the case, or mouse clicks in a process to get something done, or buttons on a remote, a mouse or other hardware, or an entire product if it is even remotely redundant (hence no "headless" Mac). I'm sure Apple is observing the developments around Win 7. My guess is, the only thing that the success (or lack thereof) of Win 7 will affect would be Apple's marketing strategy; not their product development strategy (Snow Leopard, or Mac line). Headless Mac may only come if there becomes enough of a gap between MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Pros that none of the three groups would be affected by sales numbers of the new model, and the numbers for that model end up being reasonably high. At this point, that isn't the case, so headless Mac isn't happening.

jarrett,
Funny as hell first post! It reminds me of an old Andrew Dice Clay skit, "My wife said give me 12 inches and make it hurt. So I f***ed her twice and slapped her."

@Cubert,

I forgot all about the Dice man. I would like to thank the community for all of their support.

I love mine... with one caveat: It still has issues recording audio input from USB sources. The recording comes out muffled and static-y. The issue has been discussed across the web for a couple of years now. For someone like me, who makes a living recording at home, this is a major problem. I am stuck using my 5 year old PBG4 for recording. The PBG4 works great (with the exact same USB input devices, so I know it isn't the input devices that are the problem), but its fan is so noisy I have to put it outside my vocal booth, and then outside the door of the room the booth is in... yes, I have to put it out two doors!

@mrboma,

we are talking about the same 13" Macbook Pro that was just announced in June 09 right??? How could there be a problem " a couple of years old " if the product just came out a month ago?

Also, I’m not so sure how “solid as a rock” helps people forget the fact that we built houses in Iraq.

Jul 09, 09 - 03:23 pm Comment from: Geo B

@clyde2801 -

For those that can't afford a new Mac Pro, but the iMac or Mac mini don't meet their needs - I would suggest buying the original model Mac Pro used. I've had a lot of success selling old systems on Craigslist, and dealmac.com regularly runs info on Apple refurbs and/or used systems.

As Tom Yager pointed out in his recent MBP review, most Macs are five year purchases. A two year old Mac Pro is still a great machine for much less than new.
