Cringely: What’s going on with Apple/Google relationship?
Friday, October 19, 2007 - 10:20 AM EST

"I wrote many years ago that the best start-ups are composed of symbiotic combinations of hippies and nerds. Hippies have the grand vision while nerds mind the details. Each is less without the other. Think of Jobs and Woz in 1976 and now Jobs and Schmidt (or, more properly, Apple and Google) in 2007. Apple is driven by design, which is entirely subjective, even emotional, while Google is driven by the almighty algorithm, which is only following orders," Robert X. Cringely writes for PBS.

"So why haven't we seen the fruit of this cooperation? Other than placing Google in the first position on the Safari search bar, there doesn't seem to be all that much Google yet in Apple's work. And I challenge anyone to find evidence of the hand of Apple in anything now coming from the Googleplex," Cringely writes.

"Maybe these things just take time," Cringely writes. "Or maybe (obviously I think this is a LOT more likely) Eric Schmidt has never before had to deal with anyone as brilliant and vexing as Steve Jobs."

Full article, in which Cringely says he "think we'll finally see evidence of the Google/Apple relationship toward the end of the year in the 700-MHz wireless spectrum auction," here.

The YouTube deal isn't anything to ignore. Between the seamless integration and the conversion of all content to h264, I think that counts as Apple having its hand in the Googleplex.

Oct 19, 07 - 09:31 am Comment from: DLMeyer

Well, if you command-click (RMB) on an address in your Address Book, you can open a Google Map to show you how to get there. Not Yahoo!, or whatever ... Google.

what's google?

Oct 19, 07 - 09:34 am Comment from: DLMeyer

... and then there's iWeb! Built-in ability to link to Google Maps and YouTube movies ... but a click away.

Safari search, Youtube videos on iPhone and Apple TV, googlemaps on iPhone, google in the (Leopard) address book. Minor things admittedly but they're little things that add up to make a better way to experience both companies products.

Other than Schmidt and being "good" companies, there isn't any monetary link so there's no actual guarantee of getting anything.

Oct 19, 07 - 09:36 am Comment from: Logan

h264 is not an Apple proprietary format I don't think. Even though they invented it. I believe it would be akin to saying Sony owns DVD's so any company that uses DVD's is partnering with Sony.

Oct 19, 07 - 09:37 am Comment from: An Amusing Rage

Googleplex = Go expel log.

Oct 19, 07 - 09:41 am Comment from: Gandalf

Surely Apple get paid for links via the Google search box, Mozilla does.

Oct 19, 07 - 09:42 am Comment from: TowerTone

"What’s going on with Apple/Google relationship?"

can't we just turn the spotlight off of these two people for awhile?
Let's let them get their lives together, it's what's best for the kids.
Of course, it would help if Go ogle would start wearing panties....

Oct 19, 07 - 09:43 am Comment from: Jon

As people have pointed out, the YouTube deal is great, along with the Google Maps app that was designed for the iPhone. I'm sure there's more partnering to come.

Oct 19, 07 - 09:47 am Comment from: @Cringely

What is it with these guys. They spit up some history and that is as far as they go from a technical stand point. The above posts on MDN show that Apple and Google worked together to make these apps work. Google information in a format that "Just works" on an Apple device.

Cringely is playing click wh*re with this article. JMHO.

Oct 19, 07 - 10:01 am Comment from: Spark

PBS should just publish the comments from MDN for more accurate reporting and eye-opening opinion.

Oct 19, 07 - 10:05 am Comment from: KenC

Things take time, as Cringely knows.

Oct 19, 07 - 10:20 am Comment from: igads

It's called iChat on your phone with video.

MW: And then do up your "zipper"!

Oct 19, 07 - 10:30 am Comment from: MatteBoy

Matte screens hold the attention of the user longer than distracting glossy screens.

I know this to be true by timing how long people watch them in a tv store.

If my results could only be publlished...

Oct 19, 07 - 10:30 am Comment from: Wade

Most things Google that I've attempted to install on my G4 has been beyond buggy and hoggish- I've had to uninstall all of 'em.

Oct 19, 07 - 10:39 am Comment from: Big Mac Attack

All I want to know is the release date of Nerds 3.0: Return of the Mac.

Oct 19, 07 - 10:49 am Comment from: Macaday

Does Google Talk work with iChat?

That would be nice.

Oct 19, 07 - 10:50 am Comment from: justified

Yeah. Right. I'd love to see this piece stating specifically that the best start-ups are composed of symbiotic combinations of hippies and nerds.

In the meantime, plenty of Apple+Google happening.

Oct 19, 07 - 11:07 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

There is no Robert X. Cringley!!!!

And Marc Stephens' opinion columns are never right.

Oct 19, 07 - 11:15 am Comment from: hmciv

Yes, but not to a math nerd.

"Apple is driven by design, which is entirely subjective, even emotional, while Google is driven by the almighty algorithm, which is only following orders," Robert X. Cringely writes for PBS."

Isn't that just a lot of belittling nonsense?

Oct 19, 07 - 12:42 pm Comment from: shiftOpt k

@ DLMeyer

I got mapquest when I command+clicked the addy in my address book. How'd you get google maps? I can't stand mapquest!

"Apple is driven by design, which is entirely subjective, even emotional, while Google is driven by the almighty algorithm, which is only following orders"

Shaw right! As if Google knew nothing about design, and Apple doesn't know anything about code.

The simplest explanation for Cringely's idiotic statement is that his head is too far up his own ass to know what the hell he is talking about.

But perhaps their is another explanation: Apple's code is so reliable that you almost don't realize that their are complex algorithm behind everything. And Google's interfaces are so elegantly designed that you don't even think about their design. A simple minded person could mistake this for Apple not embracing code and Google not embracing design.

I'm pretty sure both of them have been seeing other people.

Dont' forget about the export to YouTube feature from iMovie

Oct 19, 07 - 02:15 pm Comment from: mackle

clarification for logan:

sony does not equal dvd. sony and phillips were competing the early dvd formats with the toshiba consortium (everyone except sony & phillips). ibm brokered a single format which i believe only contained on of the sony/phillips unique features.

regarding the apple/google relationship, i believe it is a mutual benefit/social relationship rather than anything more formal. buttressing against common threats rather than joining things. i'm careful not to use the word "competitors" because in both their corporate cultures, "competitor" is something you watch falling further behind in your rear view mirror instead of worry about. they innovate rather than compete. that is the secret sauce of both companies. they are smart enough to know that formal arrangements would only make them less innovative and will eventually be obstructions.

think of this: you align and ally with a partner to minimize your exposure to a perceived competitor's threats. if you are apple and google, your strategy is to make threats irrelevent rather than react to them. much higher mpg for your investment engine.
