CrossOver Mac runs Windows applications on Mac OS X without Microsoft Windows
Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 01:14 PM EDT

Apple StoreCodeWeavers' CrossOver Mac allows you to install your favorite Windows applications and games on Mac OS X. CrossOver includes an easy to use, single click interface, which makes installing Windows software simple and fast. Once installed, your application integrates seamlessly in OS X. Just click and run your application directly from the OS X Finder. Clicking a Windows file or document — including email attachments — will launch the appropriate Windows program, allowing you to work on the files. Best of all, you do it all easily and affordably, without needing a Microsoft operating system license.

Adding your favorite Windows software is easy, using their normal installation CDs. Just place a Windows CD in your Mac, and CrossOver will recognize it and offer to begin the installation process. CrossOver then completes the installation and configures your application to run on your Mac. That's all there is to it.

CrossOver Mac System Requirements:
• Intel-based Macintosh system running Mac OS X (note: CrossOver will not run on PowerPC systems)
• 120 MB of free disk space

AutoCAD?

Aug 31, 06 - 01:20 pm Comment from: always Right

Why would I use this app to run MS office, whenthe better version was designed for, and pre-installed on, my MAC(s)?

Aug 31, 06 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Jamie

Redmond, start your photocopiers.

Whoops, no use, I guess. You're screwed.

Aug 31, 06 - 01:22 pm Comment from: XLM

STEAM?!?

Does that also mean the games that run via steam, or is it just the content delivery and validation part?

One could hope.

Aug 31, 06 - 01:24 pm Comment from: JohnEZ

If anyone finds a way to run The Sims 2 under this, let me know... :p

Aug 31, 06 - 01:25 pm Comment from: Ray Lane

"Why would I use this app to run MS office, whenthe better version was designed for, and pre-installed on, my MAC(s)?"

Some of the excel files I have been forced to use won't open in Mac Excel.

Aug 31, 06 - 01:26 pm Comment from: librium

Mac not MAC.....

Aug 31, 06 - 01:27 pm Comment from: always Right

I wondered about games too, at 1rst glance.
But, again, if so- why would they be saying you can run "MS Excel '03"?

Aug 31, 06 - 01:28 pm Comment from: Kudos To WINE & DarWine

CodeWeavers uses and participates in the WINE project. They joined the DarWine project after the Intel switch was announced by Apple. The great thing about using Cross Over Office is commercial support. This will be a good thing for many trying to get Macs into Windows-only environments.

Aug 31, 06 - 01:30 pm Comment from: wha?

That's what I'm talkin bout!

Sounds like an April Fool's joke though?

Aug 31, 06 - 01:33 pm Comment from: Sunra

Wow! If this is for real, and works as seemlessly as they claim, it could be a winner!

Is it heck an April Fool Joke

Why no IE6? When i get my apple notebook PC i will need IE 6!!

Aug 31, 06 - 01:41 pm Comment from: rasterbator

This can't be a good thing. To just blindly put in a Windows install disk for some app? Security issues, anyone?

Aug 31, 06 - 01:41 pm Comment from: gRen

Says it supports Half-Life 2 on their site. Dude!

Aug 31, 06 - 01:44 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

Will this run most Windows apps, or is it only the programs on their list?

Is it likely to run an obscure "nitch" Windows program that CodeWeavers isn't likely to test for?

Aug 31, 06 - 01:45 pm Comment from: JEG

Shocking that Access is not here. That is a huge app. There are a lot of customized apps running on it.

Aug 31, 06 - 01:47 pm Comment from: Soo...

So.. i suppose this ia confirmation that microsoft software is better than Apples?

Aug 31, 06 - 01:48 pm Comment from: Reality Check

If you take out the duplications (eg. MS Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, Word viewer) the list is rather pathetic. Particularly given that MacOS already has an excellent native MS Office suite. It'll be a *long* time before Wine ever offers any real alternative to running Windows, if ever. Support for every application has to be hand-tweaked, and there's no way it can keep up. Parallels and its ilk is a far better approach.

Aug 31, 06 - 01:53 pm Comment from: macromancer

If Apple had a built in solution for running Windows apps in OSX without using Windows, and maintaining a very well done UI, and performance, this would be the nuke bomb that would obliterate several companies at once.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this happen in future versions of OSX, as I think this is a big reason why Apple went Intel.

Aug 31, 06 - 01:54 pm Comment from: the other Mark

This product will help sell Mac computers since people will not have to reinvest in software.

Further, it will alleviate some of the web sites that cannot be accessed with Safari. The only real question I have is regarding security.

"Why no IE6? When i get my apple notebook PC i will need IE 6!!"
--Shreedhan

IE 5, 5.5, and 6, is on the "silver" list. 7 is on the does not work list.

Aug 31, 06 - 02:04 pm Comment from: chris

I wish people would do their homework on this rather than just blindly slagging it off. This has real promise. The project has been running for a number of years on Linux and now intel Mac osX. It works with a large proportion of apps and it's still in beta. Jesus, Windows apps don't always work with the latest version of windows!
The aim seems to be to get almost all apps to work. I reckon it's a good thing. Now all I need is an Intel mac wink

Aug 31, 06 - 02:05 pm Comment from: Captain Obvious®

JohnEZ aka dumbass

SIMS 2 already runs in OS X and Aspyr has a Universal patch for Intel based Macs.

If CrossOver could support QuickBooks Premiere 2006 and Pro 2006 (and other prior versions), UPS WorldShip 8.0 and later, I'd get a couple of Mac Mini's to use for bookkeeping at my store instead of the crap DULL we use now.

Viva la Macintosh!

Viva la Revolution!

Always Right :

Did it ever occur to you that some switchers will have the Windoze version of Excel, but not the Ma c version ? Sigh...

Aug 31, 06 - 02:20 pm Comment from: bjh

This is an excellent concept, as is wine. If you can run your existing Windoze applications without havign to run Windoze, and get the OS X experience, that's a win-win for consumers who switch !

Captain Dumbass:

No kidding Sherlock! Unfortunately, I've already spent money on it from when I was a PC user. There's no way in hell I'm paying for it all over again on a Mac.

My good man, you... are an ass. Next time, maybe you won't make assumptions that someone doesn't know something. I mean, even if one didn't know, being able to use the PC version on a Mac has many advantages, including not having to wait until it's ported. Maybe you should consider not jumping down others throats.

Cordially,
John

Who in their right mind would use IE 6???

Aug 31, 06 - 02:31 pm Comment from: DreamTheEndless

From JEG-
"Shocking that Access is not here. That is a huge app. There are a lot of customized apps running on it"

No no no no - Please stay as far away from Access as you possibly can. If you need a database app use a real database like MSSQL, Oracle, MySQL (free), etc...

If you need a spreadsheet, use Excel

If you need a pretty looking front end on top of a REALhire a REALsoftware developer to use a REALprogramming language.

Trust me on this - in the long run, it's the right choice for so many reasons that I can't get into here.

(PS: REALbasic is a good easy to use dev environment for the mac.)

Aug 31, 06 - 02:34 pm Comment from: LinuxGuy and Mac Prodigal Son

For what it is worth, CrossOver Office has an excellent reputation in companies that run Linux and Windows.

Aug 31, 06 - 02:37 pm Comment from: January 24, 1984

Just tried AOPA's Flight Planning Software.

Loaded, but all labels (for field names) are absent. Too bad, looks promising.

Will check back from time to time. Next step is Boot Camp. Ordered XP/SP2 already.

Aug 31, 06 - 03:03 pm Comment from: My Outlook is Broken

Outlook 2003 seems like the big deal here, since, like 99.99% of the business absolutely requires this program for their cube drones. I had to laugh at remedy, though. It would be cool to create Windows troubleshooting tickets on a gleaming white and pristine imac.

Aug 31, 06 - 03:07 pm Comment from: My Outlook is Broken

DreamTheEndless:
Pay me for a course on MySQL, please. Access is the Macintosh of databases (I can hear the hisses). Anyone can sit down and start using it. I consider myself halfway smart, but I really don't know how to compile and install MySQL, let alone set shit up at the command line. I want to see Access on the list.

Aug 31, 06 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Wil

With all respect to this company...their logo sucks ass. Looks like they used MS Draw to design that.
Hire the pros, people!

Aug 31, 06 - 03:41 pm Comment from: Edgeley Exile 2

Ironic that the ability to run Microsoft Project on a Mac comes at the same time Omni Group and Merlin both release decent project management apps.

Remedy is a nice touch for Corporate IT though wink

Outlook -

FileMaker is the "Macintosh of databases". (So much so that it's owned by Apple.)

Aug 31, 06 - 03:55 pm Comment from: maczealot

Micro-history? End of an era? Remnants of Redmond? Ballmer's bon voyage? Gate's goodbye? "Microsoft, weren't they a computer company or something back in the 20th century?"

Aug 31, 06 - 04:10 pm Comment from: Could I?

So with a $40 investment I can run VISIO on my Mac and not on the old Dell junk we have??? THAT is worth the price of admission by itself.

By the way - The comments on MDN are becomming nothing more than personal attacks and trash talk. I do comment from time to time when I think I have something productive to say but I am starting to avoid the comments. Its becomming hard to find good information among all the personal attacks and insulting language.

Aug 31, 06 - 04:14 pm Comment from: SJR

Hmm, too bad well over half of the software on that short list already has a native OS X version. Greatly improve/increase the compatibility with a wider selection of Windows only software and then they might have a sale. But not before then.

Aug 31, 06 - 04:23 pm Comment from: Dan The Man

My buddy says there is nothing as good as MixMeister on the Mac. Wonder if it would work. Or does anyone know a good replacement for that app?

Aug 31, 06 - 04:23 pm Comment from: macaholic

I need a Mac that will run Uru without making me buy a copy of Windows as well! Probaly cheaper to buy some shit box PC that meets the specs of this older title and have done with it.

Aug 31, 06 - 05:37 pm Comment from: kile

Sierra Steam is just the GUI and doesnt include any games.... guess there are issues with directx/openg :\

Aug 31, 06 - 05:48 pm Comment from: gorsh

I can't seem to muster much enthusiasm for this product - I know MDN and others are lauding it - but all this time and it runs MSOffice, Quicken, Photoshop 7, and the world's worst program - Lotus Notes. This technology seems more trouble than it's worth. Virtualization or dual-boot hard drives seems much more convenient than re-configuring Windows programs one at a time. Maybe I'm missing something here...

Aug 31, 06 - 06:16 pm Comment from: Neil

I think it could be useful for the odd app or some critical PC only software that an organization has to use. Question is how reliable are the apps going to be?

Still I like the choices and when I do get a new mac I would like to have the capability to run windows programs and I don't like the idea of shelling out for Windows when I will rarely need it.

After all, how many people use Classic and OS 9 apps any more. I haven't in years.

Aug 31, 06 - 07:50 pm Comment from: topshot

I installed this with some hopes as the previous beta was rubbish, and lo and behold this version is rubbish too.

I wanted to install Business Plan Pro and I spent about 2 hours even getting it installed. First it need IE, then it needed Adobe Reader. Fine, normal stuff. Then I had to install DCOM. Why isn't it there anyway?. Then the installer didn't work. Then it did work! Then the App wouldn't run. No reason given. Not even an error message. Same for Internet Explorer.

Atleast I got Adobe Reader to load.

Also, it CHEWS up memory. As much as running parallels, but atleast parallels works properly.

The install routine is also fiddly. What the hell is a Bottle! I know what it is now, but why do I need to even be aware of it.

If Apple had written this, all you'd have to do is click the installer and hey presto. No bottle setup, no configuring which windows you are using etc... Also, the Windows preferences would be under the Mac control panel.

This needs ALOT of work. It's a good start, but it's just not worth releasing yet. They need to put in the same amount of effort as Parallels did when they released beta after beta.

They also need a feedback forum so they can work on these problems. We the user need to tell them what we want and expect before we'd even consider buying this product.

For now, I'm sticking with Parallels and Boot Camp which I rarely use either anyway.

Aug 31, 06 - 09:17 pm Comment from: 00011000

The integration with Mac OS X is nuts. you can open an mp3 with Crossover Helper and have that MP3 open in the default windows app... (winamp in my case... nostalgia!!! hahaha)

I know many many people that love winamp, and i can see why - i mean, some skins have Millions of download... SKINS!

playing an 192KBps MP3 uses only 1.50% of my processor and 21MB of real memory...
iTunes OTOH uses 4.3% and needs 38MB of real memory!

I mean, that is truly crazy... and the installation was so so seamless...

If crossover allows drag and drop of MP3 files into winamp, i'd had no hesitation having it open all the time instead of iTunes because IMO, iTunes has become a fat, bloated mess of an app!!!

I really really hope that apple take out all of the downloading stuff and make iTunes fast again. It's becoming a jack-of-all trades and master of none.

My last point is that, it seems clear to me that many windows apps are more code-efficient than Mac ones. Would i be wrong in this assumption?

Aug 31, 06 - 09:20 pm Comment from: Nuke?

"If Apple had a built in solution for running Windows apps in OSX without using Windows, and maintaining a very well done UI, and performance, this would be the nuke bomb that would obliterate several companies at once."

The first being Apple since no developer would ever write a native Apple app again.

Apples are now PC clones on the hardware side (The stuff inside the box, not the pretty design of the outside).

I guess you're saying all Steve needs to do next is make the OS a Windows clone and Apple will be done, a complete transition to being a WinTel PC (As if Boot camp doesn't make them that already).

Aug 31, 06 - 09:40 pm Comment from: Nuke?

By cloning the Windows APIs, Apple could play the role of DR-DOS to Microsoft's MS-DOS. OR OS/2 to Microsoft Windows.

Yep partial partial buggy compatibility with the leading OS worked out well for those guys. It should work out well for Apple too.

Perhaps Apple could revive that OS/2 tagline "a better DOS than DOS and a better Windows than Windows"
