CrossOver Mac runs Windows applications on Mac OS X without Microsoft Windows

Apple StoreCodeWeavers’ CrossOver Mac allows you to install your favorite Windows applications and games on Mac OS X. CrossOver includes an easy to use, single click interface, which makes installing Windows software simple and fast. Once installed, your application integrates seamlessly in OS X. Just click and run your application directly from the OS X Finder. Clicking a Windows file or document — including email attachments — will launch the appropriate Windows program, allowing you to work on the files. Best of all, you do it all easily and affordably, without needing a Microsoft operating system license.

Adding your favorite Windows software is easy, using their normal installation CDs. Just place a Windows CD in your Mac, and CrossOver will recognize it and offer to begin the installation process. CrossOver then completes the installation and configures your application to run on your Mac. That’s all there is to it.

  1. CodeWeavers uses and participates in the WINE project. They joined the DarWine project after the Intel switch was announced by Apple. The great thing about using Cross Over Office is commercial support. This will be a good thing for many trying to get Macs into Windows-only environments.

  3. If you take out the duplications (eg. MS Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, Word viewer) the list is rather pathetic. Particularly given that MacOS already has an excellent native MS Office suite. It’ll be a *long* time before Wine ever offers any real alternative to running Windows, if ever. Support for every application has to be hand-tweaked, and there’s no way it can keep up. Parallels and its ilk is a far better approach.

  4. If Apple had a built in solution for running Windows apps in OSX without using Windows, and maintaining a very well done UI, and performance, this would be the nuke bomb that would obliterate several companies at once.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see this happen in future versions of OSX, as I think this is a big reason why Apple went Intel.

  5. I wish people would do their homework on this rather than just blindly slagging it off. This has real promise. The project has been running for a number of years on Linux and now intel Mac osX. It works with a large proportion of apps and it’s still in beta. Jesus, Windows apps don’t always work with the latest version of windows!
The aim seems to be to get almost all apps to work. I reckon it’s a good thing. Now all I need is an Intel mac ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
