Crucial readies fast notebook SSD lineup
Saturday, July 11, 2009 - 09:01 AM EST

Mac mini closeout dealsCrucial will offer "a major update to its solid-state drive line later this month," Electronista reports.

"The 2.5-inch M225 series will use more up to date multi-level cell (MLC) storage and a new memory controller that significantly improves speed," Electronista reports. "Estimates put the peak performance of the fastest, 256GB drive at 250MB per second for data reads and 200MB per second for writes."

Along with 64GB and 128GB versions, the new 256GB drive will "use an ASATA II interface and should receive a more official release on July 20th," Electronista reports.

Can someone please explain to me the difference between inexpensive flash drives (32 GB for about $50 or so) and very expensive solid state drives, like the ones in the MacBook Air.

Why can't someone simply link up a handful of the 32 GB chips in flash drives to make an affordable SSD? I'm sure there's a reason, but I can't find a good one...

Yeah--you'd think they could just *snap* a bunch of 32gb's together...

Two reasons:

1) Performance

2) Longevity

Still, I'm surprised no one at least offers it as a low-cost, low-performance solid-state drive. And considering the track record of many conventional hard drives, I can't believe flash memory is THAT less reliable in the short term....

What the heck is ASATA? Alliance of South Asians Taking Action? There's SATA and eSATA, bot no ASATA...

How are MLC drives "more up to date"? SLC drives offer faster writes, better longevity and are the reason there's such a huge disparity in price between the two types.

soon, all apple laptops will be as thin as the mac book air, but differ only in monitor size.

I'd LOVE one of these things in my MBP.

The question is:
How much?
