Dan ‘Fake Steve Jobs’ Lyons rehashes real Steve Jobs ill-health rumors
Wednesday, September 03, 2008 - 11:08 AM EST

"Author Dan Lyons, the man behind the popular 'Fake Steve' blog has added fuel to fire surrounding rumours of ill health affecting the real Apple CEO," Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK.

MacDailyNews Take: To state the obvious, Dan Lyons is a royal asshole.

Evans continues, "Lyons claims to have learned that Jobs is suffering from some form of chronic condition which has not improved since he appeared at WWDC. "'I can’t really get into this,' says Lyons, 'but people close to him have been saying for quite a while (before the appearance onstage) that he’s really sick. And someone who saw him last week says he still looks like [expletive].'"

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: On June 13, 2008, Phillip Elmer-Dewitt reported for Fortune that the operation that Steve Jobs underwent "radically rearranged his digestive organs and... permanently changed the nature of his health." Jobs' "surgery was a variation on the Whipple procedure, or a pancreatoduodenectomy, the most common operation for pancreatic cancer. Nobody who has a Whipple is ever quite the same." And, on July 23, 2008, John Markoff reported for the New York Times that "People who are close to Mr. Jobs say that he had a surgical procedure this year to address a problem that was contributing to a loss of weight. Mr. Jobs has told several associates, as well as some members of Apple’s board, that he is dealing with nutritional problems in the wake of his cancer surgery. Medical descriptions of the surgery state that in some cases it leads to weight loss and low energy." Both reports would seem to explain very well the regurgitations that are attributed to R.A. Lyons.

so where is his proof for any of this bullshit??? Thank alot "ballmer" who is most likely paying this schmuck or he just sees stock going down a bit and wants it to drop so he can buy in.

Sep 03, 08 - 10:21 am Comment from: Original Shiva

He "really can't get into it", but then 'really gets into it.'

I "really can't say anything about what slime balls some people are to comment on supposed comments of someone else and pass it off as truth to get their name in the news when they have nothing to contribute to society themselves" but...

Sep 03, 08 - 10:24 am Comment from: Superior Being

Baseless attacks designed to sway the ignorant by focusing on trumped-up distractions in a weak and failing attempt to obscure stellar performance.

Dan Lyons ought to apply for a job on Obama's "Smear Sarah Palin" campaign team.

Sep 03, 08 - 10:26 am Comment from: ericdano

I guess we will all see Tuesday what condition Steve Jobs is in.

Sep 03, 08 - 10:28 am Comment from: An Asymptotically Stable Solution

The only thing dying here is Dan Lyons' credibility and career.

(And you'd think an alleged Superior Being would know he's in the wrong discussion. Asshat.)

Sep 03, 08 - 10:32 am Comment from: Jamie

What a disgusting individual this Dan Lyons is.

I mean, come on man, show a bit of decency you fscking dickhead.

Sep 03, 08 - 10:33 am Comment from: JAYGEE

We will find out on Tuesday, assuming Steve Jobs is presenting the event, which I assume he will, as he presents them all.

Sep 03, 08 - 10:35 am Comment from: Jennifer

An Asymptotically Stable Solution,

Superior Being's right, in the correct thread, and you're just pissed to see the truth in print.

I suppose, genius, that you'll soon resort to calling me an "Asshat," too.

Sep 03, 08 - 10:37 am Comment from: iaJim

Former FSJs is just trying to reclaim a small piece of the former glory he enjoyed as FSJ. His new blog is just plain boring.

Sep 03, 08 - 10:45 am Comment from: Correlation spectroscopy

@ Jennifer

No, Jennifer. You're just being a jerk. What compelled you to respond? Was it an overwhelming compulsion to prove that you're right and someone else is wrong?

Got anything on topic to say, fellow genius?

Sep 03, 08 - 10:49 am Comment from: Doom and Gloom

Lets find and kill the bast#$d!

Sep 03, 08 - 10:49 am Comment from: Sheesh!

@Correlation spectroscopy -

So much for your superior intelligence and humanitarian award.

Sep 03, 08 - 10:51 am Comment from: Dasgeek

Steve Jobs has put enough in place at Apple that it will have an incredible 10 years even if he retired tomorrow.

"Dan Lyons ought to apply for a job on Obama's "Smear Sarah Palin" campaign team."

MacDailyNews Take: To state the obvious, Dan Lyons is a royal asshole.

So why do you bother to post anything concerning him?

I haven't read your article, opened the link or ever gone to his site. If we all did that and didn't comment, it wouldn't take long for "assholes" like him to just fade away.

Let's start now.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:01 am Comment from: theloniousMac

The media in general suffers from a "chronic condition," i.e. the inability to stay out of the deeply personal lives of public figures. I am interested in what Steve Jobs thinks about technology. I want to know if Steve Jobs caught in a Starbucks using a Sony Vaio and a Windows Mobile Device. (Unfortunate initials there). Mr. Jobs' health, though I care and hope very much he's just fine, is none of my fscking business.

And as long as I'm at it, it is NONE of my fscking business is Sarah Palin's daughter is pregnant. It is NONE of my ... oh you get the picture.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:03 am Comment from: Anonymous©

I've posted what seems to be a million times that a Whipple Procedure removes much of your digestive system. Nutritional issues are going to be an obvious problem. One surgical treatment to address this nutritional uptake issue is a reverse jejunem. It seems to me that this is what Steve has had. These are complications from the original surgery, not anything to do with a recurrence of pancreatic cancer.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:04 am Comment from: theloniousMac

@DanielM

You are right. Often people manipulate the Mac cult to make themselves appear relevant.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:06 am Comment from: MidWest Mac

@superior being

How in the hell did you connect a story about Steve Jobs' health to the presidential election?

You just got my vote for most idiotic off-topic political message board entry of the day. Congratulations!

Sep 03, 08 - 11:06 am Comment from: Bill

I think, at the iPod event next week, Steve needs to come out in a fat suit. "One more thing" could be him consuming a family-sized KFC meal. He could have a parallel chart of iPod sales and pounds of Avocados he's eaten since 2001.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:10 am Comment from: marcos

Maybe AAPL will do better without Mr. Jobs' day to day control of the minutia of operations. He could take a relaxed role. The company does have a fine technical and operating management team, generally speaking.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:12 am Comment from: The Nuclear Overhauser Effect

@Sheesh!

Kudos for missing the point entirely. (And humanitarian? WTF?)

Back on topic:

Lyons is desperately trying to cling to some sort of relevancy with this type of Enderlean and Dvorakian attempt.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:14 am Comment from: zek

Shows how desperate dull gray people are with their shitty uninspired drek now under serious threat. I suppose for people with no imagination the only thing they can do is mount personal attacks, they'd never consider making things people actually want. That's old-fashioned. They're used to stringing together meaningless marketing phrases and slurping up all the money. They aren't used to having to work.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:15 am Comment from: mugwump

Isn't sjobs only 53? He's just a kid.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:16 am Comment from: Frenkel Exciton

"Steve needs to come out in a fat suit."

He could borrow some clothes from Steve Ballmer or Rob Glaser and stuff pillows down the shirt.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:16 am Comment from: thginot

@ Reality Check,
For once I have to agree with you.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:19 am Comment from: Czech Mate

People who take the time to castigate the readers of this site really are very sad indeed, getting so worked up about comments from posters sick of FUD, lazy journalism and misinformation. Really. Get a life.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:33 am Comment from: Mac-nugget

@thginot
@ Reality Check,
For once I have to agree with you.

Me too.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:33 am Comment from: Raquel Whipple, er, Welch, whatever.

People who take the time to criticise those who castigate the people who are angry about the people who are criticising the comments that express annoyance over Dan Lyons need to severely reprimanded.

Or Whippled? Sorry, whipped.

Jobs needs to eat a Whipper, no, I mean a Whopper.

Perhaps there is a special menu item for Whipple people at Burger King?
Its called a Whipple-Whopper.

Ok, yes, I am a bit bored - so now I am going to work.

Hey, being self-employed isnt all fun, you know.....

BTW, no-one actually KNOWS if His Steveness had a Whipple, do they?

Maybe he had a Whapple.....

OK, I'll quit now.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:42 am Comment from: JohnLee

Dear Jennifer and An Asymptotically Stable Solution,

I'm sure there are no end of blogs where you can discuss politics, but this isn't the place for it. You may make a good point on the real subject of this thread, but you lose half your audience when you bring politics into it.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:43 am Comment from: NormM

@Superior Being, @An Asymptotically Stable Solution, @Jennifer,

This political bashing reminds me of PC/Mac bashing. Human beings almost always rationalize that their big decisions were the right ones and work very hard to convince themselves of that. Nevertheless there is an objective reality (e.g., Macs are better). As a non-partisan observer who sees plenty to criticize in both parties, I think that right now it's mostly the Republicans that are fooling themselves about what is good for the country and the world. I think a few have realized this but (as is almost always the case with humans) for most this test of faith has only strengthened their convictions. Since we'll never convince each other, and since our arguments will only seem rude and irrational to each other, perhaps we should just avoid the political flame war and stick to our usual uninformed speculations about how Apple will take over the planet!

Sep 03, 08 - 11:47 am Comment from: Jim

Who cares about Steve Jobs' health anyway?

Thanks. That was my point. I'm glad you agree.

Sep 03, 08 - 11:56 am Comment from: Apple Death Knell Counter

I've returned with a new job and title...

Steve Jobs Death Knell Counter.

Actually, I honestly believe Steve Jobs isn't in total charge of Apple lately. Just some "fit and polish" things that Steve would catch have gone out the door and caught Apple.

Say for instance MobileMe and the Interferon iPhone mess.

Of course the lousy glossy screens showing reflections so badly one can't even see what's on the screen.

Now how stupid is that?

A decision by some glim glam schmuck Steve Jobs wannabe.

I'm so glad I'm using Vista now. Not.

*pukes on keyboard*

Sep 03, 08 - 12:28 pm Comment from: MacMarc

WAIT! WAIT! THIS SMELLS FISHY!

The blogger who claims to have this quote from Dan Lyons has faked emails from Steve Jobs in the past. I repeat. He has a history of publishing FAKE EMAILS!

Before you believe something you read look at the source. Look at the other so-called articles on the source website, Macsoda.com It's all uninteresting, navel-gazing, news-free crap -- some of it fake.

I do not believe this until Real Dan Lyons confirms it.

Sep 03, 08 - 12:33 pm Comment from: other side

I am interested in what Steve Jobs thinks about technology.

And as a shareholder, I am interested in Steve's prospects of remaining above room temperature & being able to continue thinking about technology.

We don't need specifics, but we don't need Steve to be a Fidel Castro either. If Steve IS extremely sick and taking extended time away from his duties at Apple, we need to know.

Sep 03, 08 - 12:38 pm Comment from: other side II

it is NONE of my fscking business is Sarah Palin's daughter is pregnant. It is NONE of my ... oh you get the picture.

What happens if Lisa Brennan-Jobs gets knocked up and makes Steve a grampa? Will that escape the Apple news spotlight?

Sep 03, 08 - 12:48 pm Comment from: oldbuggytop

Wow, that's wonderful that this guy Lyons can practice medicine without spending the first day in med school. Surely such brilliance would not be put to work in trying to destroy the market for a successful organization!

Sep 03, 08 - 01:15 pm Comment from: Noodles Noodlemann

@NormM

You want us to leave politics out of it except you manage to give us your take anyway. Doofus.

Sep 03, 08 - 01:30 pm Comment from: Andy

This is becoming beyond ridiculous.

Apple, or at least Steve, really need to kick those 'pundits' down a notch or two before we have monthly 'Steve health warnings'. And I highly, highly doubt Steve would tell anyone outwith his family and circle of close friends ANYTHING about his health.

Steve Jobs is not bloody public property! I don't even want to know about his health, since it's his own private business, frankly.

Talk about low brow journalism...

Sep 03, 08 - 01:52 pm Comment from: Macromancer

No, the asshats in these threads are the ones who feel compelled to bring politics into EVERY SINGLE THREAD.

Yeah I'm looking at you Dev Singh.

Sep 03, 08 - 02:47 pm Comment from: willyboy

If everyone would stop comparing him to the rest of us here in America he would probably look pretty normal.

Yep. A nice loving close-knit family, these Mac users have.
You can feel the love. Smell the camaraderie.
This is where to come for acceptance and forbearance.

Sep 03, 08 - 03:10 pm Comment from: bizlaw

The biggest problem with the media these days is that they still have the need to be the first to "report" some piece of news. This leads to inaccuracies and, even more disturbing, the proliferation of blogs written by people associated with mainstream media outlets which have the air of being news.

There are no facts in Lyons' report which weren't reported several months ago. In other words, no news.

So instead Lyons drags an old "story" from the grave and rehashes it, except he does it in a blog, so technically it's an opinion piece and not news. He throws in the obligatory "unnamed sources" in a weak attempt at credibility, and offers no support for his allegations, not even an "I saw Steve last week". So he's just throwing sh*t against the wall and hoping some of it will result in hits on his website.

Notice also that this blog came out less than a week before Apple's next big event. Coincidence? No way.

Lyons was much more popular back before anyone knew who he was.

Sep 03, 08 - 03:20 pm Comment from: Frenkel Exciton

Find out if he's shorting AAPL.

Sep 03, 08 - 04:07 pm Comment from: Rob

"Baseless attacks designed to sway the ignorant by focusing on trumped-up distractions in a weak and failing attempt to obscure stellar performance.

Dan Lyons ought to apply for a job on Obama's "Smear Sarah Palin" campaign team."

Couldn't have said it any better myself! The media is really having themselves a week for the ages. What a bunch of pathetic, hypocritical, self absorbed asshats. No thanks, I don't need the media to think for me either thank you very much...

Sep 03, 08 - 04:20 pm Comment from: @andy

Steve Jobs is not bloody public property! I don't even want to know about his health

Steve is a crucial part of Apple, a publicly held & traded company.

What happens when Steve the visionary and CEO becomes little more than Steve the keynote speaker, all because of health issues? Of course the presentations are important, but so is the CEO side that drives the products.

I make no apology for making direct comparisons to Fidel Castro. Every leader has to be healthy enough to... lead! Covering things up doesn't help anyone.

Sep 03, 08 - 04:30 pm Comment from: oopsie child

Obama's "Smear Sarah Palin" campaign team."

IIRC, Obama publicly reprimanded his own people for bringing up the issue, and clearly stated that family members are "off limits".

It might have more to with precluding comparisons of Sara's daughter accepting an Obama-esque "burden of an unwanted child", but I do give Obama credit for setting SOME ground rules.

Sep 03, 08 - 05:06 pm Comment from: seanymac

Has anyone seem him since his last presentation? Does he show up at work every day or at all? Where is he?

Sep 03, 08 - 05:46 pm Comment from: yet another steve

Dan Lyons may have created Fake Steve.
But is NOT fake Steve.
DL is on my think-before-i-click-list.
Fake Steve was my fav read on the net, EVER.

Sep 03, 08 - 08:35 pm Comment from: Mac User

I don't know what the big deal is about Dan Lyons.

I didn't think FSJ was funny or entertaining at all. Really. I just don't get all the attention. Maybe it was just that he used "Fake Steve Jobs" as a name, but other than that, the content was pretty lame. They say he sounded like Steve Jobs but I never thought he did.

I would not be surprised if the Real Steve Jobs didn't even bother reading FSJ. Most of the attention was just asking WHO IS FSJ rather than actually thinking his content was interesting.
