David Hockney unveils new exhibit featuring artwork created on his Apple iPhone
Friday, May 01, 2009 - 01:43 PM EDT

"Venerable British visual artist David Hockney has embraced a new tool for his artistic creation, unveiling on Thursday a new exhibit featuring artwork created on his iPhone," CBC News reports.

"The 71-year-old painter said [he] invested in the popular, high-speed internet-enabled, media-playing, touchscreen cellphone just four months ago, but has created a host of drawings — including landscapes, portraits and images of flowers — on it," CBC News reports.

"His exhibition 'Drawing In A Printing Machine,' which opened at London's Annely Juda Gallery on Thursday, features iPhone drawings as well as other pictures created on his computer and with a camera. The 10 landscapes and 18 portraits will remain on display until July 11," CBC News reports.

Beth Hale reports for The Daily Mail, "Hockney has had the phone for only four months, but he has already turned it into a hi-tech canvas. It even fits neatly on a miniature easel in his London studio."

"He has painted flowers and drawn landscapes on the iPhone, which is manufactured by Apple and lets users input commands directly on the colour screen with their fingers," Hale reports.

"As well as being a mobile phone, the iPhone takes pictures, plays music or video and acts like a handheld computer with high-speed internet access," Hale reports. "'I lie in bed and send illustrated art lectures to friends and also my own iPhone paintings,' said Hockney. 'I like to draw flowers by hand on the iPhone and send them out to friends so they get fresh flowers. And my flowers last!'"

Great artist Hockney, where's the images?

May 01, 09 - 01:56 pm Comment from: Cubert

They're really stretching the definition of art these days. Although, I guess its better than "paintings" by a 3 year old kid who threw balloons filled with paint at a blank canvas.

@Cubert
Hockney is in a position where what he does is pretty much "the definition of art these days"

Interesting he's doing this. I am a graphic designer/Marketing consultant and when I do not have my portfolio available, I use my iPhone. I created a basic slideshow with music that showcases my work. I would never use this as my main form of presentation, but it works well if your hanging out in a bar or other social setting. It's worked well as I have picked up three new clients so far.

@Cubert:

Art is much too big a word to cover everything that goes by this name. David Hockney, like Andy Warhol, is technically a "graphic artist" rather than a "fine artist", but the distinctions between the two are very difficult to pin down. C'est la vie.

WOW... these are really something... the color palette is great and the way he blows up the iPhone photos that pixelate and draws in other images underneath gives a cool 3D illusion. It is really apropos of the time and the medium is the message. Rainy Night is uber cool - almost reminiscent of a MIA album cover - the pixel is pointillism in the 21st century... this art is FINE to me.

talks about the same subject but still don't mention the app he's using. they only mention the app "brushes" being used by another artist named jorge columno.

Painting on an iPhone.

Get with the times, you old Fart.

Finger-painting on a Pink ZuneFune is where it's at nowadays.

Hockney wrote a great book on the role optics had in art, during the Renaissance period.
