Digg’s Kevin Rose: Apple next-gen 3G iPhone to feature dual cameras, mobile video iChat
Monday, March 24, 2008 - 11:59 AM EDT

"During a 90 second segment of his weekly Podcast show 'Diggnation' this past Friday, Rose told viewers that Apple may be restricting third parties from authoring applications that run in both the foreground and background partly because it doesn't want a competitor to its own mobile iChat application that will do just that," AppleInsider reports.

"More specifically, he claims that a 3G version of the iPhone hardware due in a few months will employ two digital cameras situated back-to-back -- one on the front side of the unit behind the transparent touch-screen, and a second one on the back of the handset as it exists today," AppleInsider reports.

"Combined with the mobile iChat application, the front-mounted cam will pave the way for live video conferencing over AT&T's high-speed 3G wireless network with computer-based iChat users, as well as other second-generation iPhone owners, according to Rose," AppleInsider reports.

That sounds awesome. And maybe put a flash in the camera.

Mar 24, 08 - 12:04 pm Comment from: anaknipedro

A 3G iPhone? No way! I didn't believe it when Steve Jobs said it before, but now that Kevin Rose confirms it I believe!

Mar 24, 08 - 12:05 pm Comment from: Chew

Is this not the same guy who claimed to have seen/used the iphone claiming (in a drunken state) that`s it`s incredibly small nano like basically getting everything about the iphone wrong?

Mar 24, 08 - 12:05 pm Comment from: Grain of Salt

Keep in mind, this is the same Kevin Rose who has a track record of being spectacularly wrong when attempting to predict features of upcoming Apple products.

Mar 24, 08 - 12:06 pm Comment from: Jeff

Was he drunk again, I thought he learned his lesson last time he let the cat out of the bag (coincidentally he was half in the bag that time) wink

Mar 24, 08 - 12:08 pm Comment from: neek

The technology is already there for mobile video chat, we just needed 3G speeds and the extra camera.

Mar 24, 08 - 12:10 pm Comment from: Chew

@ Jeff
I think you hit it dead on. He`s no Oracle of Delphi, beer does not equal clairvoyance

Mar 24, 08 - 12:11 pm Comment from: me

Maybe it's a bad day ... but I freaking cringe every time I hear 'they're punishing us early adopters'. The phone does what it was supposed to when you bought it. Get over it.

whew, I feel better. I need more caffeine!!! grin

Mar 24, 08 - 12:22 pm Comment from: Big Al

Didn't Steve say there'd be Flash in the iPhone over his dead body or something like that?

Mar 24, 08 - 12:26 pm Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1.

How did Alex Albrecht possibly think that those things would be for existing iPhones?

Mar 24, 08 - 12:34 pm Comment from: Blue Dream

This guy is "DIGGing" for some credibility.
For any phone, battery life is top priority.
Dual cameras are a double whammy against battery life...even a flash.
Isn't DIGG weblogware of the social sorts related...how does this guy know anything more than we do about hardware.
Common sense says iPhone battery life and bandwidth issues have to improve before any type of videoconferencing is going to happen.
This guy needs attention and wants to say that he said it first. He has no scoop, yet desperately still wants to be the fly on the wall.

Mar 24, 08 - 12:34 pm Comment from: ericdano

Kevin Rose is an ass clown. He really has no clue about anything. Perhaps that is why G4/TechTV let him go?

Mar 24, 08 - 12:36 pm Comment from: Empty coffee cup

Tell this guy to focus on getting DIGG up to the competition instead of focusing on getting hired by Apple.

Mar 24, 08 - 12:40 pm Comment from: peragrin

As others have pointed out

Apple has a patent on a camera that does just that.
ichat is awesome that way now.
3G speeds would allow such a chat to take place.

He may be an arse, but he might be right too. personally I think it is a cool idea, though i don't know how practical it would be. Whether or not it's true we won't know until it actually comes out.

Mar 24, 08 - 12:49 pm Comment from: Wish I Was Here

Yeah, I agree with the comment about early adopters. I've been gleefully using my iPhone for almost 9 months, which is what I paid for. Any day now, I expect someone to come out and say how the early adopters of VHS are being punished because now we have Blu-Ray....

Mar 24, 08 - 12:50 pm Comment from: Wish I Was Here

And by the way, is it just me, or does that video seem kind of rehearsed?

Mar 24, 08 - 12:51 pm Comment from: Goople

well of course Apple intends to do this eventually, when is another matter. I'd be impressed (and sold) if they pull it off this year.

Mar 24, 08 - 12:53 pm Comment from: Cubert

Game, set, match.

Mar 24, 08 - 12:55 pm Comment from: Think

Beer doesn't make you smarter??

Mar 24, 08 - 12:55 pm Comment from: Cubert

"He may be an arse, but he might be right too."

True. And, C1 and I have been saying this since before the iPhone came out - once it gets 3G, look for Jetson's like video chat.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:00 pm Comment from: Sid

It's obvious that video chat will eventually come to the iPhone. Everyone wants it.
Apple as always waits until the technology is available to make sure that it works well.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:01 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

No cellphone camera in the world has a camera flash that is powerful enough to do any good beyond 2 feet. That's because they don't have enough battery power.

Cellphone cameras are dogpoop, compared to even a cheap digital camera. There are lots of engineering reasons why that is the case.

Maybe Dilger is right and people don't want HiDef, but rather LoDef, because the number of people who act like cellphone pics and videos are useful if only they had zoom, flash and more megapixels, amaze me.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:03 pm Comment from: KingMel

No news here. As I recall, this was a major topic of discussion when the iPhone was released last year.

@Blue Dream: The second camera would only be a power hog if both cameras were powered on simultaneously. Based on Apple's typical attention to detail, I would expect the screen-side camera to power up only when the iChat app is launched.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:07 pm Comment from: Ray

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the early adapters (iWhiners) for buying crappy iPhone 1.0's last year and funding the R&D;for the really cool 3G iPhone I will buying this year, for a cheaper price.

Please do not forget to toss your cash at the underpowered MBA 1.0 this year because in about 18 months I will need a fully featured slim laptop for a reasonable price.

Just my $0.02

Mar 24, 08 - 01:15 pm Comment from: Sid

Ray, the early adapters will sell their iPhone 1.0 on eBay and buy the latest.
They probably will only need $100 to make up the difference and in the meantime they have enjoyed the iPhone while you were waiting.
I would also suggest that you don't buy iPhone 2.0 because iPhone 3.0 is in the wings.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:16 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Low-power 3G chipsets were due to be released sometime early this year. Surely Apple has been waiting for such things before releasing iPhone 2.0.

The dual camera thing sounds like a cool idea. I've heard that there are some camera phones available in japan that have a similar feature.

This would be amazing if one could toggle between the 2 cameras. Send live video of some event, then switch to a live vChat. How damn cool would THAT be?

Mar 24, 08 - 01:16 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Cubert
:And, C1 and I have been saying this since before the iPhone came out - once it gets 3G, look for Jetson's like video chat."

Bet on it. This is going to be a Big Giant Thing™.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:20 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Oh, and Kevin, I'm still waiting for Apple to send me the 2 battery iPhone with the slide-out keyboard you promised me.

And get me a Fat Tire while you're up.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

" in about 18 months I will need a fully featured slim laptop for a reasonable price."

Ray:
Ferchrissakes, go to an Apple Store and buy a goddam MacBook… TODAY.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:33 pm Comment from: macman

No way AT&T;will allow video iChat over 3G, not at this point, it'll clog up their network. They had to update their EDGE network just to handle all the new iPhone traffic for web browsing. I can see video iChat being available when you are in a wifi spot though. I can't imagine battery life lasting long with video iChat as well. Plus 3G coverage is horrible in my area anyway. I have a better chance of finding a wifi hotspot than getting decent 3G coverage.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:36 pm Comment from: karrde97

Sounds great. Now if they could find an easy way for iChat 4 to actually work on my iMac. I'd be even happier.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:42 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

I think video messaging will happen first. Real-time might take a bit longer, but the ability to send someone a video clip would be a very cool alternative to text messaging, and if they limited the time of the clip, they could mitigate the network traffic a bit.

Mar 24, 08 - 01:42 pm Comment from: No Rose

Kevin Rose = Micros**t sellout.

Mar 24, 08 - 02:04 pm Comment from: The Black Rose

Hey Kevin, Doesn't it have 2 batteries and work with all carriers - Oh and it's "small as s---"???

Mar 24, 08 - 02:38 pm Comment from: downfall01

Man give the guy break he even said it was just a rumor and a lot of things on this site have been rumors to. I just love how people get all butt hurt and angry over dump things.

Mar 24, 08 - 03:20 pm Comment from: Sheep Register

It's already been done: http://macdaddyworld.com/?p=39

Mar 24, 08 - 03:38 pm Comment from: Reality Check

iChat on the iPhone might finally provide the impetus for iChat to become more than an interesting but useless application on my Mac. I hope Apple will simultaneously release a version for Windows and Linux. Then, finally, there would be a video chat application that could be used on any platform and on the phone. Alternatively, perhaps Skype can use the SDK to release a version for the iPhone - but it sounds like Apple will prevent anything that useful through its restrictive licensing rules on the iPhone.

Mar 24, 08 - 03:48 pm Comment from: Goople

when iChat for iPhone is released, Apple will release a free version of iChat for Windows. VOIP will never again be the same.

Mar 24, 08 - 05:17 pm Comment from: BiZarRo BaLlmEr

what an ass

Mar 24, 08 - 05:36 pm Comment from: mcdeans

@C1

> And get me a Fat Tire while you're up

Mmmmm, Fat Tire, my favorite.

Mar 24, 08 - 05:51 pm Comment from: razor

dont know why youre all jumping on kevin's back, the other guy is the biggest anti-apple geek iver ever heard. he cannot stand any apple news and needs to be flushed down he toilet with that shitbox laptop he was using. awww its red, you see pc's can look cool too. what a fk'n loser.

Mar 24, 08 - 06:26 pm Comment from: Wrong

"No way AT&T;will allow video iChat over 3G, not at this point, it'll clog up their network. They had to update their EDGE network just to handle all the new iPhone traffic for web browsing. "

AT&T;has been streaming TV to people who have 3G phones for years.

The iPhones problem was that it was 2G and cannot take advantage of AT&T;'s fast network.

It's the iPhone which needs the upgrade not AT&T;'s network.

Mar 24, 08 - 08:31 pm Comment from: AAPL

it is too soon

It is more important to get iphone users buying dev apps right now.

refresh with 32 48 mg of mem may 64 who knows, two way video is a year away but dont worry the games alone will keel you busy and the price cut is going to blow people away $199 iphone is going to sell, us ear adapters will by every 2 year.... just MO ... base on how AAPL plays the game

Mar 24, 08 - 08:36 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Kevin reminds me of me when I was in college (that semester) and Perma-Stoned. Only he is much richer. And has better weed.

Kevin, be sure to tell Alex his hair looked fine in the "Stuck In St. Louis" 2 minute special, even if he *was* four inches shorter....grin

Mar 25, 08 - 01:18 am Comment from: Dimplemonkey

iPhone Pro? With the upcoming apps and 3G compatibility, the battery life on this thing better be respectable. I already drain mine quicker than no one's business!

Mar 25, 08 - 11:44 am Comment from: Rudge

Why would the iPhone need two cameras? The average Macintosh has an iSight that can do video conferencing as well as taking still photos, and, would probably fit easily inside of the next iPhone box. The only question now is, what does AT&T;have to say about the next generation iPhone being able to do this? That would take away from AT&T;'s text messaging income.

I'm not drinking any beer, but I predict that this is all vaporware, since most Mac users haven't been able to video conference using the ever-increasing bloated iChat anyway. I would imagine that 3G doesn't offer much better bandwidth to perform much better. Still it would be cool if the next iPhone could do this. People would swarm to buy one.
