Dell has its marching orders,” Colin Barr reports for TheStreet.com in his article, “The Five Dumbest Things on Wall Street This Week.”
“The Round Rock, Texas, PC giant got the go-ahead this week on a big U.S. Army supply contract. The Defense Department agreed to buy computers, displays, printers and peripherals from Dell and others under the so-called Army Desktop Mobile Computing-2 contract. All told, the deal could be worth $5 billion over 10 years,” Barr reports. “That news was well received at Dell, which of late has had precious little good news to report.”
“‘Because of our long history and direct relationship with the U.S. Army, we have a thorough understanding of its technology requirements, both domestically and abroad,’ said Troy West, vice president of Dell’s federal business segment,” Barr reports. “And shrugging off the inconvenient fact that eight other companies share the contract, including rival Hewlett-Packard and CDW, West adds that Dell is ‘uniquely positioned to support the Army’s global needs.’ Or at least uniquely proud of itself.”

is dubby doin a favor for his kin?
As this was announced, terrorists around the world collectively breathed a sigh of relieve.
This move ought to ensure the Army being bogged down in Iraq for at least the next 10 years.
Whats a Dell?
Bush bashers are such idiots!
I’m sure W has bigger problems to worry over than this, which means he will be accused of something, no matter what he does.
“Down! Down, dumb dog!”

You know, the US Military is highly security oriented, they would love to have a rock solid OS like Mac OS X running the show.
Too bad it’s tied to sissy looking hardware.
Apple looses again, and so does the security of our armed forces.
STUPID APPLE.
This will be known as the Blame Bush era.
I hope we never get a democrat president again. Ever!
Clinton bashers are such prudes!

Dumb and Dumber?
If apple was so stupid, why then is the computer industry always following on the creations?
In other words, copying their ideas.
Only 5th dumbest? Dell is slipping!

Hey, don’t laugh. It is called continuous improvement.
Actually the Army does use Macs. MOS 25V(Combat Camera and Video) use Macs. I tried to enlist as Combat Camera, but they only have 15 slots a year for that MOS and were full when I went to MEPS. So I walked.
As for Bush,
Sometimes being the smartest person in the room is a major problem as well. A lot of times the smartest person in the room can’t see the forest for the trees.
Co inky dink, Dubya is from Connecticut and educated in the Northeast, Phillips, Yale, and Harvard. Texas has enough problems. They don’t need yet another psychological burden like Dubdub.
Why is this story here? Who here gives a shit about Dell?
A President & Vice President from Texas (yes, I know Cheney USED to be from Wyoming) hand over a huge contract to a company based in Texas, that uses CPUs from a company in Texas (AMD). Just like the lion’s share of the money on the Iraq War was handed over in no-bid contracts to Haliburton ( a Texas company) and it’s subsidiary KBR ( also a Texas Company ).
You know the same kind of sh*t happened to KBR (then Brown & Root) back during Vietnam when LBJ (also from Texas) was in office. The moral of this story. Put Texans in the White House and it’s a payday via Warfare, to all your homeboys and cronies.

Q: What do you call someone who graduates last in their class from medical school?
A: Doctor.
Q: What do you call someone who graduates in the bottom of his class from busienss school?
A: President.
Typical liberal logic: take two facts that are superficially related (and boy were those two), then suggest some secret alliance or shadowy conspiracy based upon them. That would get you an F in logic, and it gets you an F in any serious political debate.
As for Dell being overly proud of itself, it does show just how far they have fallen. Why is that Apple news? As Apple brings prices down (see today’s Applematters), Dell gets hit hard.
The Army didn’t choose Dell because Apple’s hardware was sissy. You have to be insane to think that, as all hardware that sees field trials will be ruggedized to withstand the climate. I think it’s probably Apple’s lack of connections with such companies that influences these deals the strongest.
As long as politics are up again I only wish the worse thing goood ol’ Dubby ever did was spooge all over an intern’s dress! In many of his critics’/opponent’s minds, that was Clinton’s worse atrocity. Bush literally gets away with murder & torture.
I still wonder about that Jeff Gannon guy overnighting in the white house though. . . . .
My Dells stock is zooming up!
And my Apple, too!
@ BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots
only in the mind of a neomoron is there such a thing as a typical liberal… you idiot.
Old jokes. “Q: What do you call someone who graduates in the bottom of his class from busienss school?
A: President.”
Q: What do call somebody that is too dumb to know how to spell “business”? –
A: An MDN poster named Old jokes.
And so every President graduated at the bottom of his business school….yeah, sure.
The movie quote is certainly odie-ous. And should not be attributed to our twentieth President.

George W. Bush or Chimpanzee?
Yes other operations within the military use Mac’s, the spooks certainly do!
Also just last Thursday whilst I watched BBC News 24 (only available in UK, the much better BBC World elsewhere – you lucky lot!!) I saw a report from Afganistan with a group of British soldiers in a camp crouching around a Macbook Pro and others watching from a seated area a Keynote presentation displayed on a large screen powered from another Macbook Pro.
They were all watching, alongside the Keynote app, a Quicktime movie of the previous week’s operations.
There’s really no mistaking this for anything else! Nothing other than a Mac will do for the world’s best trained army, the British Army. Just to clarify that for you, the US Army is the world’s best equipped Army, now if we could just get as well equipped as the US Army is……I’ll hold that thought?!
I do sys admin for the Dept of the Army in DC, and the Dells are ALWAYS a headache. One office had all new systems installed recently, and with in 3 weeks I had two logic board, one RAM stick, and four hard drive failures.
Oh and by the way, all of the Army’s websites are created on Macs too.

“ You know, the US Military is highly security oriented, they would love to have a rock solid OS like Mac OS X running the show.

That’s ranks up there on the nonsense scale with people who actually think Bush is doing a good job.
First of all there is nothing sissy about a sleek aluminum Mac Book Pro, or a stealth black Mac Book, but even if there were what the hell does that have anything to do with it?
bush is from texas
dell is in texas
Bill Clinton is from Arkansas.
Wal-Mart is from Arkansas.
WM grew explosively during the Clinton presidency.
Coincidence?
Conservatives seem to live in the same reality distortion field that Jobs loves so much.
It scares me that the military…..THE MILITARY is running on Windows.
Well, this is the same military that can’t armor up its vehicles against insurgent IED’s (despite YEARS of soldiers dying in roadside explosions). This is also the same military that decided against finishing the Iraq job 15 years ago, and sprung the can of worms we’ve been dealing with ever since.
If only the armed forces could be untangled from Washington’s red tape and allowed to do their job…

Well, most notebooks are sissy looking.
Years and years and years ago (1988?), I was working at one of our federal military academies. Zenith Data Systems (remember them?) had just won a contract to supply all of the military academies with computers. They sold a 25 pound luggable (used a 9″ CRT) computer and they had a T-Shirt done up with these very tough looking military types carrying Zenith Desktop and Luggable computers. I managed to score one…
A few years later, Zenith did a laptop sale to the service academies. They did the same T-shirt, but the military guys were now carrying laptops.
It just didn’t look the same.
HA HA … stupid terrorists…now they have to figure out how to hack a Dell!!!! Good luck you morons.
…like anyone can hack a Dell.
Hey– Clinton goes nuts and looks like a lying jackass over the weekend with Chris Wallace, and the liberal tools come out in droves everywhere you can’t stomp on them (like cockroaches).
Clinton’s a over-sexed tool (and yes, I love sex as much as the average horny twenty-something male) and it’s typical that the first shot across the political bow in this forum comes from a puerile liberal suckhole who doesn’t even know how to use capitalization.
No wonder it was so easy for Wallace to make Clinton look like an angry, impotent asshole. All he had to do was sit back and let him speak.
“You know, the US Military is highly security oriented, they would love to have a rock solid OS like Mac OS X running the show.”
Yep, they can use them to show terrorists bad home movies, poorly composed snapshots, and music from guys who learned the guitar yesterday until they finally crack.
I can confirm that my master likes sex as much as any of the other twenty-something males I’ve met.
I just wish he’d call me in the morning.
Hey demoliton . . . . do you honestly, seriously believe what you just subimtted?
Additionally, use of terms like “puerile liberal suckhole” pretty much demolishes your credibility in my book.
Try respect, and honest thought and you might enjoy life a little more.

Old jokes. “Q: What do you call someone who graduates in the bottom of his class from busienss school?

Names the ONLY President to graduate from Business school.
All these posts are about as relevant as this story was in the first place. Who gives a shit about you ultra-right wing weeners looking for any opportunity to puke up more political BS. Come election time you’re precious little dub-U is gonna reap what he has sowed. The whole Iraq war is one big boon-doggle built on a solid foundation of lies and propaganda. It’s going to be a long time before the GOP gets another opportunity like they’ve had. This is one good screwing that isn’t going to be forgotton soon. But I digress, who gives a shit about Dell and why is this story even a thread on a Mac web site?
The ONLY reason why they chose Dell was because they are cheap.
Back during the Cold War I was an 84B/84F, the predecessor of today’s Combat Camera MOS. It was a great ride courtesy of the US taxpayer. Too bad you didn’t get the job.
As usual I can’t help contributing on a story that went political… Bob I ditto your response… except I’m not nearly as optimistic about November as your. Rove told his minions not to worry he’s got an October surprise, let’s hope it’s not another 9/11 type inside job.

10/12 years ago the Corps of Engineers at Ft. Lost in the Woods, Misery, used Macs. Not sure what they are on now?
Royal Engineers School in UK also used Macs at the same time. That’s where I got my first fix on a Mac and haven’t looked back.
With Boot Camp, or Paralells, aren’t there enough credible personel then pushing for mac in the gov’t (FBI, CIA, etc.)?
I think the biggest terrorism threat will be a major breach of our “information” infrastructure.
Shit, if kids can hack, you don’t think Islamic Facists w/ advanced degrees can tear down a Gubments’ windoze infrastructure?
this thread is slightly off topic. here are a few clarifying comments.
1. admc-2 is an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract that negotiates a large block purchase price for a proposed set of solutions to a spec. any dod agency can order off this contract until the $5billion cap is met or the 10 years expire. 9 companies were each awarded exclusive vendor status in their contract. dell is just one. cdw and the 6 small businesses interest me, because even if they did not propose macs in their initial solution, they can propose a technology upgrade with macs after one year. cdw for example, has macs available on the nasa idiq contract that is currently in place. so macs are not shut out and dell’s are not the only brand available ont he contract.
2. these types of contracts allow the buyer to get large quantity pricing even on a single purchase. one of the precursors to this contract was desktop1 &2 an air force idiq contract in the 90’s. macs were a contract line item on those contracts. macs are on the gsa schedule today. what makes it difficult to buy a mac (unless you work at nasa) is the eyetee mafia (some of you wrongly refer to them as the “army’s sys ad) are really hung up on this standardization kool aid. they are so backwards that they think standardization somehow equates to saving money. i firmly believe these people were born with un-upgradable 64mb of ram (so they obvious have to chose between beathing and thinking). about zero of these policy makers could qualify as a sys ad. i don’t believe apple trying to enter this shrinking market with cut-throat competition is in their best long term interests. at least not as a comodity brand. let dell and hp swim in the red ink. if they entered this market, it would be through a var partner like gtsi or cdw. their pricing on the full workstation level computers would let these companies insert the pro line in the next technology refresh. you have to remember the bids and prices were as of a year ago for this contract. probably pre-bootcamp, which was would not meet the windows 2000/xp requirement in the spec.
3. the mach5 xserve supercomputer, currently #21 in the worlwide list @24576gflops is an army supercomputer cranking out hypersonic missle thermodynmic simlulations today.
mw: involved…apple needs to get involved intelligently by partnering with one of the winning vendors (except dell)
American soldiers are such a losers. They win wars only in the Hollywood.
“Republicans blocked every move he tried to make.”
Not true, if it had a pulse, Clinton made a move on it. No way the republicans could block them all.
“American soldiers are such a losers. They win wars only in the Hollywood.”
At least they can decide which side to be on. I guess the Finnish know that if you switch sides often enough you’ll eventually end up on the winning one.

Bill Kristol’s memo?
Do you know what that is?
You are confused.

In fact, just compare by what names you each chose to identify yourselves by.

The economy was careening off the rails before GW even took office. If you need to spout off, at least know the facts.
The 90’s roared in spite of Clinton. What did he do that was so miraculous? NAFTA?? LOL. The only miracle is how Clinton successfully took credit for an economy that overran itself into short-term prosperity. Too bad there weren’t more fat interns keeping him busy.

While your soldiers die in foreign lands, major terror groups plan to kill your citizens, and your country’s economy goes to hell, you’d take priority -and pride- in getting your dick sucked?
