Dr. Roach: Before you buy Photoshop Elements, Pixelmator definitely worthy of consideration
Wednesday, January 07, 2009 - 11:11 AM EST

"Usually when asked about an alternative to Photoshop I recommend Photoshop Elements from Adobe, but my web-mistress suggested that I also look at Pixelmator which is an image editor with a similar look to Photoshop and is touted as "… image editing for the rest of us" and at $59.00 US it just might be. It runs on Macintosh OS X 10.5.5 and later. So I downloaded a copy and tried it out," Dr. Michael N. Roach reports for DigitalAppleJuice.

"Pixelmator reminds me of what I remember Photoshop 3 (or perhaps 4) was like... in their day they were the state of the art, and with [them] I did some fabulous work. Pixelmator can do equally as well and is a bargain at the price," Roach reports.

"For the student on a limited budget but who does own a Mac computer, I now have an additional suggestion for a Photoshop substitute. It isn’t Photoshop but it will do a good basic editing job and is neither as daunting nor as expensive as Adobe’s flagship product," Roach reports. "If you are a Mac user on a tight budget, Pixelmator is definitely worthy of consideration."

MacDailyNews Take: MacDailyNews has been using Pixelmator exclusively in place of Adobe Photoshop since December 2007 for online graphics. Obviously, we can recommend Pixelmator. It is "demoware," so you can try it before you buy.

Looks interesting.

Any chance to not give Adobe money is good.

I understand Microsoft's photo organizer update is on hold again until a new feature they have called 'Feces' stops pointing to pictures of Ballmer.....

Jan 07, 09 - 11:37 am Comment from: Micro Me

Admittedly, my image processing needs are modest, but I swapped PS Elements for Pixelmator a year ago, and it works fine for me.

PS: It's good to see you posting again TowerTone. I wonder how we can entice the old punster, the big "A" to return?

Jan 07, 09 - 11:53 am Comment from: pr

I would use it but it does not have a CMYK mode... which for me is a deal breaker

Jan 07, 09 - 12:06 pm Comment from: Morganstain

CMYK has to be top priority for Pixelmator...how can you print anything accurate. I like the program, but am still waiting on another upgrade or two.

Jan 07, 09 - 12:24 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Thanks Micro.
Let's hope big 'A's ghost will reanimate.
I am consulting my BlueTooth Ouija Board now.....

I thought it was "tauted".

Jan 07, 09 - 12:54 pm Comment from: CourtJester

I kind of like Pixelmator too. It has Curves where Elements 3 has not (at least not in Leopard but in Tiger can function using imported actions).

Despite that it still feels a cut down version of Elements which is a cut down version of Photoshop. But its getting better with every upgrade and I look forward to the day when I no longer need to buy overpriced Adobe software in the UK.

I think for the first time, I agree completely with theloniousMac here. I remain just as surprised by this.

Jan 07, 09 - 01:19 pm Comment from: Cubert

TT,
You've been keeping that joke in your back pocket all day, haven't you?

Jan 07, 09 - 01:24 pm Comment from: alansky

Pixelmator's success would surely not be harmed by changing what has to be one of the world's worst names for a piece of software.

Jan 07, 09 - 01:52 pm Comment from: GregoriusM

And Photoshop is any better? It has outgrown the purpose of merely working with photographs.

To change a name that is so well known, however bad one might think it is, is not a great marketing decision.

Q
In hindsight, you are correct.
I failed to mention the need for shitfaced detection at Microsoft is due to the increased drinking.
Their new red-eye reduction helps with that and crying.....

Any relation to Tow Mator from Pixar;-)

Jan 07, 09 - 02:33 pm Comment from: loloontheair

For sure with the enormous amount of images in MDN, it is for sure a great reference. wink

No kidding, I'll give it a try as I am too fed up to wait 3 hours to load PS to resize an image...
I hope it does metadata (IPTC) editor. It's a must for photogs.

Pixelmator > PSE

Jan 07, 09 - 02:54 pm Comment from: spliceguys

It works nice, but doesn't have layer effects.. No drop shadows.. So, can't use it for what I do. If you don't need that, it works nicely and has a good looking interface.

Jan 07, 09 - 03:39 pm Comment from: MacSmiley

Isn't CMYK one of the things PSE lacks as well?

Jan 07, 09 - 04:35 pm Comment from: Makka

Been using it for approx a year now & it very nearly has replaced all PS does for web. You guy's need to remember that that have been making Pixelmator for a short time now, it's now where as mature a product as PS.

& no CMYK !, hah! - Print is dead, Aren't you reading this online wink

Jan 07, 09 - 05:10 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Photoshop CSx > Pixelmator

Jan 07, 09 - 05:19 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

"& no CMYK !, hah! - Print is dead, Aren't you reading this online"

Right. Spoken like someone who has never worked in print. =)

Jan 07, 09 - 08:03 pm Comment from: Freelancelot

Pixelmator looks promising...especially for an early version and only costing $59. It's a steal for beginners. Lack of layer effects is a bummer, unfortunately. That's highest on my wish list aside from cmyk mode. I use the CS3 suite apps for graphic design, but Pixelmator/PSE are the best I can recommend for clients and for family members. Pixelmator has no CMYK mode, but neither does Ps Elements.

Jan 09, 09 - 05:14 pm Comment from: crazyy

this article is very weak praise for Pixelmator, saying it is like PS 3 or 4 - that is pure bull -

Pixelmator is actually a beautiful app. I hope that the Apple community supports the further development of this great, and reasonably-priced app. There needs to be more than just Photoshop on the market.

Kudos to the Pixelmator programmers. It is a great app. Keep going no matter what anyone says...

Feb 05, 09 - 09:16 am Comment from: madbadcat

@Freelancelot: if you mean blending effects, you might want to take a look at PIxelmator again.

I am writing a series of tutorials on Pixelmator for Photographers at http://digitalapplejuice.com/series/pixelmator/ loosely based on Kloskowski and Kelby's tutorials. I find that Pixelmator is quickly becoming my go-to app, especially when doing web work. I will say that it doesn't seem to like tiffs but it has extensive rgb color management that imports icc profiles for your various printers and papers. This is a great app, cheap, efficient, easy to use, and quite sophisticated for its price. I rarely use CMYK anymore- I don't get the kind of big print house work that requires it.
