Dvorak on Apple iPhone: ‘I think Apple can do wrong and I think this is it’
Saturday, January 13, 2007 - 10:41 AM EDT

John Dvorak, CBS Marketwatch Technology Columnist, discussed Apple Inc.'s new iPhone with Erin Burnett on CNBC-TV's Thursday, January 11th edition of "Street Signs."

A portion of their exchange went like this:

Burnett: The iPhone. Who cares about that?

Dvorak: Well, that was the big announcement at CES, which was the announcement at the Macworld Expo here in San Francisco which was the iPhone which doesn't look, I mean to me, I'm looking at this thing and I think it's kind of trending against, you know, what's really going, what people are really liking on, in these phones nowadays, which are those little keypads. I mean, the Blackjack from Samsung, the Blackberry, obviously, you know kind of pushes this thing, the Palm, all these... And I guess some of these stocks went down on the Apple announcement, thinking that Apple could do no wrong, but I think Apple can do wrong and I think this is it.

The video via CNBC that doesn't seem to work with Safari (does work with Firefox for Mac with the free Windows Media Components for QuickTime by Flip4Mac plug-in) is here: http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=163459576

MacDailyNews Take: John Dvorak's direct ancestor, circa 3,500 B.C., regarding the wheel, "I think it's kind of trending against, you know, what's really going, what people are really liking on, in transport nowadays, which are those sleds we drag around. I mean, everybody else has sleds, obviously, you know, kind of pushes the things around, everyone... I think that guy Steve with his crazy wheel thing can do wrong and I think this is it."

Good news for Apple! There's no stronger guarantee of success than Dvorak's kiss of death on an Apple product.

He needs an English class.

Jan 13, 07 - 11:48 am Comment from: Hywel

Wow. He just voiced an opinion, and gave a reason (the keyboard). Well done Dvorak on this occasion. It was a bit rambling, but I think that was pretty much FUD free.

this guy has no credibility whatsoever.

Jan 13, 07 - 11:51 am Comment from: pieterdebecker

Dvorak? I'll change my keyboard to Azerty and never look back.

Jan 13, 07 - 11:52 am Comment from: Joe

This guy is an idiot, no one likes those little keyboards, plus the web surfing on those phones is crap

Web surfing is the big thing here, being able to surf the web like you do at home is huge, access to info on the web is what its all about, and with applications going web based, like from google, you dont need stupid proprietary software like that found on every other "smart" phone.

This is way better because if it handles web pages the way our regular browsers do then it can handle all those web based apps. Thats the big deal.

Plus, i watched the full demo, this thing is easy to use, much easier to use than my current phone with less than HALF the features.

MSN word "LAW" as in Apple laid down the LAW this week.

Jan 13, 07 - 11:52 am Comment from: Halix

Can't this guy speak normal english? What the # is he brabbling about?

Jan 13, 07 - 11:53 am Comment from: rsbell

Obviously people "like" these tiny keypads: that's all that is available, until now.

Dumbass.

Jan 13, 07 - 11:54 am Comment from: Lurker_PC

He really is as bumbling as people say.

Jan 13, 07 - 11:55 am Comment from: Zune Tang

Dvorak gets it. Thanks for telling it like it is, John.

Consumers want the variety that a multitude of creative partners can bring to the table. Microsoft has this, Apple doesn't. It's about choice, and Blackjack, Blackberry and Treo are super-fantastic choices. Some of them run Windows Mobile, which is even better. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Back to the drawing board, Apple. Again.

Your potential. Our passion.

Jan 13, 07 - 12:00 pm Comment from: gwm

You know, although doubtful .. if it should somehow amazingly turn out that, after the actual introductory iPhone product release, there somehow continues to be a strong market for thumb-pads just because people are hooked on them, I would wager that somebody will be pretty quick to release a thumb-pad iPhone accessory.

Jan 13, 07 - 12:03 pm Comment from: MadMac

That's what I hat about CNBC; many times they are just after sensationalism. Look, they can't even expect their guests to put together a coherent sentence (let alone a paragraph). I guess John relies on software to correct his English at his "journalism" side job.

No facts to back up the statement, just flinging shit against the Apple to see if it will stick.

Most people are stupid enough to buy such trash. Just look at the circulation for the New York Times.

"This iPhone... it's not... you can't just make a call you have to... it's not something you can just dump on the market... it's not a big truck, it's a series of tubes! And you've... listen, when you make a keypad, then you loose the keys, and then what happens to your personal keys? I got an iPhone the other day... my staff called me Friday, and I GOT IT MONDAY... and they get... kinda, they get all tangled up, this iPhone..."

Hey Dvorak, I have a bridge to nowhere I'd like to sell you.

Back in the 80's, many analysts saw the mouse and the GUI as nice toys.

Back in the 70's, many people saw the personal computers as toys.

Most people don't understand the iPhone.

The fact that it has OS X inside makes a big difference, and makes it not only a phone but a platform.

Jan 13, 07 - 12:11 pm Comment from: DSK

I don't like MDN Takes, but I have to admit, this one was really funny. If Dvorak's stance on Apple won't turn you off, his command of English will.

Apple fans: In order to make a compelling case, don't follow Dvorak's example. At all times, strive to be coherent and elegant.

Jan 13, 07 - 12:12 pm Comment from: Too Hot!

It's a Bait!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do not fall for it! You would only be increasing the hits on all things Dvorak!

Jan 13, 07 - 12:18 pm Comment from: DSK

ChrissyOne, that was really funny. The episode of the Daily Show where he gets lambasted is one of my favorites. :D

Jan 13, 07 - 12:18 pm Comment from: iMaki

He thinks users like the little keyboards at the expense of screen size? What a freaking fool. Besides, the iPhone has virtual keyboards tailored to each app. His nonsensical, bonehead tirade reaks of Microsoft. How this fool ends up giving interviews to anyone is behond me. He's in good company of idiots with Enderle and emBallmer.

Jan 13, 07 - 12:21 pm Comment from: Markim

If you want to stick out, swimm across the stream. Say the opposite of what everybody else is saying and you get attention. Yes, he wants to get more hits. It's just his strategy and he doesn't care that this makes him look like a fool. Just ignore him.

Jan 13, 07 - 12:23 pm Comment from: DanielN

Welcome back Zune Tang! Took you a few days to get your breath back, huh?

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Yep. Just like mp3 players we're broken. That is why the iPod failed.

True enough. The thing is, one has to be able to see when it is broken. Web browsing on my Treo is broken, so I hardly ever use it. Texting is broken. Voice mail is ackward. Apple sees that the so-called smart phones are broken. MS and others do not. I don't know if the iPhone is the one that will succeed, but it has shown what is possible and cell phones will never be the same.

Jan 13, 07 - 12:25 pm Comment from: schmluss

Maybe that girl that bought a Zune becuase everyone else had an iPod will buy an iPhone because everyone else has a keyboard!

I remember a long time ago, when I was in college, Apple came in and showed us this new QuickTime that they had. And they showed us a crappy looking little video and we laughed the guy out of the room. Guess we should have invested in the company instead.

Jan 13, 07 - 12:31 pm Comment from: Lvr

Ha ha! That's funny! No need to get worked up over it, we all know Dvorak's M.O. Just take it as humour and move on.

Jan 13, 07 - 12:32 pm Comment from: yet another steve via iPodDailyNews

Thank goodness.

I was worried when EVERYONE seemed to do nothing but gush over this.

Apple's great products have all been quite harshly criticized by some at announcement. It would be troubling if this were not the case for iPhone.

Macs got arrow keys and eventually even function keys... if iPhone really needs a keyboard (which I doubt), I trust Apple will figure out how to add one and in the process create an even better phone.

Jan 13, 07 - 12:34 pm Comment from: G-Spank

I love how Apple continues to make these people squirm. They just can't stand the fact that Apple keeps releasing one amazing product after another!

Jan 13, 07 - 12:45 pm Comment from: yet another steve via iPodDailyNews

Forgive the serial commenting but....
What would be really nice is if this doubt creeps in seriously during the next few months and drives down the stock price. Can you say buying opportunity.

Because what I saw was a set of compelling new technologies with applicability far beyond the iPhone shown. And a company quickening the pace of its innovation in a category it absolutely dominates. Whether their long term phone share winds up being 1% or 25%, NOBODY is going to touch them in the media player market. We saw the true video iPod, and the definitive punctuation to the whole Zune thing... it's just that the phone had to be announced early cuz of the FCC process. Just remove the phone (and maybe the net stuff... or maybe not!) and add a hard drive...

Okay, here's my negative to drive down the stock price so we can buy more: Ipod sales could suffer while consumers wait for a touchscreen ipod. (It is possible.) Spread that and buy buy buy. =)

Jan 13, 07 - 12:57 pm Comment from: anti-creative cretin

It is disappointing that CNBC would even consider talking to John Dvorak or that CBS would troll along with this still-born windows zombie.

I'm disappointed in Erin Burnett for even looking his way. Someone should talk to her about fraud. I doubt he'd even get the time of day on the earlier Squawkbox show. Long ago he aspired to be a tech analyst but couldn't make the grade and has since tried to create credibility by amassing web hits by baiting Mac users. He's transparent. He's a sleaze. He is an absolute fraud.

Anti-Creative Cretin ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh.

Jan 13, 07 - 01:18 pm Comment from: not fooled

It was a bit rambling, but I think that was pretty much FUD free.

People ramble when they don't have anything meaningful to say. Dvorak is on the wrong side of the fence, and he knows it.

With vision and speaking skills like that, Dvorak needs to run for public office. He'd be a good fit.

Jan 13, 07 - 01:18 pm Comment from: Buster

@C1...thanks for the tangled up tubes. Now your first comment makes sense to me (I thought you had lost it there for a sec)

@Dvorak...I said it once before, all you are is just a v and an a away from being you!

Jan 13, 07 - 01:26 pm Comment from: JD

Wake me up the first time Dvorak is ever right about anything. Does he still think Apple is throwing out OSX for Winblows, or was that last month's troll?

Please, the guy is a professional troll. He's no more a technology pundit than he is a movie reviewer.

Jan 13, 07 - 01:30 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

You want to see someone successfully bag on a seriously crappy product? THIS is what it looks like. No rambling uncertainly, just the confident assertion of fact (with a little well-deserved chutzpah). Dvorak didn't have a coherent statement about why the phone will fail, he just stumbled over his own lack of vision and hoped we'd take the bait. Thanks, MDN, for alerting me to another link I'll never click.

Dvorak

Yup, works for me!

Jan 13, 07 - 01:47 pm Comment from: whatever

Statistically speaking, from what I can tell, at least 90% of the time, Dvorak is indeed off-base, and throwing around pointless opinions, but I kind of agree a LITTLE bit on this one...

But not totally... and here is why...

About five years ago, I got to work on a prototype LCD touch keyboard and it drove me nuts not being able to feel the buttons, and I never could touch type very well, despite 30 years of computer usage. It just made it that much worse.

That said, it is virtually impossible to touch type on those tiny little "Smartphone" keyboards...

I gave a Macbook Pro a long term try and the one finger, two finger activity on the tracckpad lives up to the claims. I got used to not having a second mouse button in a few days, and I was a Windows user since 1990.

Anyhow, I'll reserve judgement of the iPhone until I actually get one, and believe me, I will, regardless, and so will at least 10 million other people.

End result, while Dvorak may be right about a LOT of people, he is wrong about just as many.

What JCD says about Apple or it's products doesn't matter. It never has . He is irrelevent

Jan 13, 07 - 01:55 pm Comment from: EZ Mac

Its just funny how people are saying things about the iPhone that have no clue how it actually works and feels. They are going off pictures and what their own opinion is of what it can do and can't. I personally am not getting one for a while for a couple of reasons the price and the service that it is locked into. Just like all new technology if you wait a little you will pay a lot less. I know that in a couple of years it will probably be unlocked, a lot cheaper, and I'm sure the newer versions will have a lot more memory to play around with. When that happens and it won't be long then I will invest in one.
I also know that when all the people bashing this thing actually experience this smart-phone for the first time they are not going to have anything else to say at all. They will shut up and just keep on pressing things on the phone for hours.

Jan 13, 07 - 01:55 pm Comment from: Mark

Keys?

If you really want a physical keyboard, I suspect the iPhone can have one. Remember, it has Bluetooth®. What are wireless keyboards? Oh, yea... Bluetooth®.
I use an IR keyboard for my Palm Treo 650 if I have a lot of e-mails to type on the road... I'm sure that the iPhone will be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard as it is already set to "pair" with Bluetooth earphone/mics.

Jan 13, 07 - 02:16 pm Comment from: Lvr

Isn't the whole point of the "touch" keyboard that it's supposed to be better and easier to type on than those tiny little plastic keyboards?

Jan 13, 07 - 02:19 pm Comment from: Roberto - re: Thought Process..

"I remember a long time ago, when I was in college, Apple came in and showed us this new QuickTime that they had. And they showed us a crappy looking little video and we laughed the guy out of the room."

I saw the same thing at a printing/graphics trade show. The room burst out in applause. That was around '92, when PCs used DOS with no GUI, no mouse, no shit.

Jan 13, 07 - 02:24 pm Comment from: ken1w

There may be cases where having a tiny physical keyboard works better than a "virtual" keyboard on the screen. But the advantages of having an infinitely adjustable interface and a screen that can occupy most of the front face far outweigh those few occassions when the feel of clicking botton keys works better. Besides, Apple will probably have a "landscape" mode for using the on-screen keyboard. Then, each "key" will be bigger and "thumb-typing" will be easier than on those tiny button keys.

During the keynote, Steve Jobs showed a lineup of "smart phones" before showing the iPhone. They looked pretty cool. Then he showed the same lineup after introducing the iPhone. Those same phones now looked archaic. That's how the public will react to the iPhone when it is released. People with the current smart phones will look at their phones and say, when my contract expires, I'm getting one of those iPhones. The good thing about the six-month wait is that there will be a lot of two-year contracts expiring during the time.
