Dvorak trolls: ‘Apple should pull the plug on the iPhone’
Wednesday, March 28, 2007 - 05:29 PM EST

Apple Store"The hype over the unreleased iPhone has actually increased over the past month despite the fact that nobody has seen or used the device. This, if nothing else, proves the power of branding and especially the power of brand loyalty," John C. Dvorak blathers for MarketWatch.

"It's the loyalists who keep promoting this device as if it is going to be anything other than another phone is a crowded market. And it's exactly the crowded market aspect of this which analysts seem to be ignoring," the bloated gasbag vents.

The blowhard babbles, "The problem here is that while Apple can play the fashion game as well as any company, there is no evidence that they can play it fast enough. These phones go in an out of style so fast that unless Apple has half a dozen variants in the pipeline, its phone, even if immediately successful, will be passé within 3 months."

"What Apple risks here is its reputation as a hot company that can do no wrong. If it's smart it will call the iPhone a 'reference design' and pass it to some suckers to build with someone else's marketing budget. Then it can wash its hands of any marketplace failures," the admitted hit whore prattles.

The Round Mound of Unsound expounds, "It should do that immediately before it's too late. Samsung might be a candidate. Otherwise I'd advise people to cover their eyes. You are not going to like what you'll see."

MacDailyNews Take: Whatever, John. Have you no shame? MarketWatch should pull the plug on John C. Dvorak if they value their integrity.

Obviously, to everyone but Dvorak, Apple's iPhone is a blank slate that is extremely malleable; Apple can change the software, and hence the device already in people's hands, at will. So much for it becoming passé.

Dvorak admits to baiting Apple Mac users for hits:

Mar 28, 07 - 04:35 pm Comment from: ShadowMac

Clearly a troll.

All the phone bosses have said they expect smart phone demand to explode over the next few years.

And phone design? Look how long it takes for new versions of the RAZR to emerge, and they still look the same as they did 3 years ago.

I believe if Samsung sold the iPhone it would not be nearly as successful as Apple.

Mar 28, 07 - 04:43 pm Comment from: R

Just to add through my tears/laughter:

I don't think anyone is exactly ready for what iPhone portends to be. This is a small computer with a great deal of possibility. It is also very easy to use-- easy in the sense that when you use this sort of thing, you want to keep using it.

Holy shit is iPhone gonna' clean up. I don't mean to be vulgar, but it just hit me that this is going to be very big. I've been on the fence for a while, but no more. iPhone is a new platform and it's going to clean house.

Ballmer is going to squirt a brick. Pass the Xbox-lax. It's going to hurt.

Dvorak - take out the VA, (he should attend the psych ward at the VA), and you have D-O-R-K.

Mar 28, 07 - 04:47 pm Comment from: glad cow

So Dvorak's reasoning that cell phones go in and out of style in a few months time is solid. But Apple is the kind of company that can change the way markets work. For example, the iPod and the iTunes store have both done this. Is it too far fetched to think that Apple can do change the cell phone market in a similar way?

Mar 28, 07 - 04:47 pm Comment from: Famous Grouse

The same logic that applies to licensing OS X applies here. While apple could probably make a bundle of cash licensing the touch screen interface, without tight integration between hardware and software, the whole thing will spiral downwards into mediocrity.
On the other hand, Apple is going to have a hard time keeping up with new generations of air interfaces as they roll out. I suspect the reason the iPhone is 2.5G is that the chipsets are sufficiently commodized that they can be integrated by any device manufacturer. Until the same is true of 3G and 4G, not to mention WiMax and whatever the whitespace standard turns out to be )(802.22?), Apple will be playing catch up in that regard.

Mar 28, 07 - 04:47 pm Comment from: montex

Thank GOD Dvorak came out against the iPhone! Can you imagine the bad Karma if he'd actually liked it? If he said "iPhone is Sooper!" then that would be the death-knell. Who's going to iCal this article and bring it up next year when Apple is still having trouble meeting demand for the iPhone?

Mar 28, 07 - 04:49 pm Comment from: Steve M

He's still missing the point, the iPhone isn't the RAZR of the day!! The entire iPhone UI can change with SOFTWARE updates. To keep up with whatever someone else comes up with, they just release a free download with new features.

Mar 28, 07 - 04:50 pm Comment from: john

Sorry John I don't think so. 1 million AT&T;customers are already asking about it before its even released so making up FUD about how it won't sell is non-sense.

Mar 28, 07 - 04:51 pm Comment from: glad cow

I know its the cool thing to do to ridicule Dvorak, and while its true Dvorak tends to put a negative slant on almost everything Apple does, he does have a pretty good feel for the pulse of the tech industry. He may say things we don't want to hear, but he brings up valid points from time to time.

Mar 28, 07 - 05:18 pm Comment from: jay

The problem with trying to refute idiots like Dvorak and Thurrott is that should their negative opinion about a product turn out to be true, they'll say see, I told you so. If the product turns out to be a success, they'll say, or at least think, is that buyers are deluded. There really is no point worrying about, or responding to, these people. You're not going to change their opinion by responding on their web sites, and you're "preaching to the choir" on this site. As such, why waste time and energy discussing negative forecasts?

Mar 28, 07 - 05:19 pm Comment from: Toby Belch

MDN!

Why do you play HIS game. He admits he's just out to goad the Mac community.

He doesn't believe anything he says, and he ADMITS IT, for crying out loud!

Why do you give him a platform!

john,

you write:- "Sorry John I don't think so"

Why do you take him seriously? He admits himself he's not serious.
We know he's writing rubbish and he knows it too.
It's the posters who react who are the suckers, not Dvorak.

the iPhone runs a variant of Mac OS X. EVER HEARD OF SOFTWARE UPDATES, DVORAK?

retard.

Mar 28, 07 - 05:30 pm Comment from: Chris

Dvorak may be a blow hard, but he's accidentally hit on the one thing that's giving Apple a huge edge over the competition. He, and the cell phone makers, think that the iPhone is about style. It has style, but it's really about function. When they get around to realizing that, they'll think that function equals features. When they see that matching the iPhone feature for feature doesn't help them, they may finally realize that the user experience determines the value of function.

More likely, they'll blame it on Apple's 'zealous' fan base while they scratch their heads wondering what they can do about it. Just like with the iPod, they'll be baffled when iPhone users outnumber Mac users, but they still won't understand what Apple's real advantage is.

They're so used to selling shoddy products that they just can't recognize quality when they see it. Quality from the hardware through the softare, is why Apple can sell 'similar' products at higher prices, and people will gladly come back for more, but these guys just refuse to see it. That is Apple's biggest advantage.

To the "Just Ignore Him and He'll Go Away" crowd:

To use an extreme example: they tried that with Hitler. It didn't work.

Dvorak already has a platform: MarketWatch, PC Mag, and others.

What MDN is doing is right. Shine a spotlight on him and others like him.

If you're angry, you should be angry at MarketWatch and others that employ Dvorak for his slimy tactics.

Write to MarketWatch and complain: http://www.marketwatch.com/support/feedback.asp

Dvorak is priceless.

He provides excellent entertainment, those that take him too seriously, need to loosen up a little.

He is an entertainer, he ranges from mildly amusing to downright hilarious.

We need more people like him!

Go Johnny Go. Johnny B Good!!

Mar 28, 07 - 05:46 pm Comment from: Gandalf

"pass it to some suckers to build with someone else's marketing budget".

That's part of the point, Apple will subcontract manufacture but Apple doesn't need no marketing budget, those dollars go into designing better kit and Steve does the marketing, someone estimated a $400 million value already.

On the other hand Microsoft allocated $500 million to the launch of Vista. They're offering discounts already according to El Reg http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2007/03/28/ms_vista_shipments_claims/

Mar 28, 07 - 05:59 pm Comment from: Toby Belch

Journo,

sorry mate, I think you're being just plain silly. The comparison with Hitler isn't just extreme, it's absurd.
If you take time to look at the video, he admits to saying one thing and then the opposite, just to goad the Mac community, and people like you and MDN fall into his trap, despite the fact that he says he is setting one. Pretty dumb.

We don't believe that he'll go away if MDN ignores him. If MDN ignores him, he just won't be there. For me anyway. Because I'm confronted with him HERE and very seldom on the other sites I visit.

Are there any advertisers on his page? I'm not giving him a hit just to see.

If there are, will someone please post & name them here? I for one will make a point not to even consider those vendors. Some nasty emails would be in order too...

Mar 28, 07 - 06:05 pm Comment from: Wingsy

My email to

I read articles in MarketWatch fairly regularly and have had a high regard of what I read here. Until today.

I don't claim to know a lot about most subjects I read about here so I take what I read as information I can trust. But today I see you have posted an article from John Dvorak about his opinions on Apple's iPhone. Now, no one but Apple knows much about the iPhone, but what Dvorak is saying isn't about details of the iPhone but rather how he feels it will perform in the marketplace. I don't know much about that either. But what I DO know is that Dvorak will say anything that will fire up the Mac faithful for the sole purpose of getting hits on his web site. And yours too it would seem. What he says doesn't have to make any sense or be logical or be insightful. It just has to stir up emotions to get people to click his link so he can sustain his advertising revenue. If you think I'm wrong here then all you have to do is visit this link and hear him say it for himself.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAWDYaWAVQQ

This email isn't to criticize Dvorak for trying to make a living although his technique is morally questionable. It is to criticize YOU, for giving someone a platform for their own agenda without regard to the truthfulness of what is being written. Even Dvorak doesn't believe what he says. He makes stuff up. He says so himself. You say that MarketWatch is "...a leading provider of business news, financial information and analytical tools." Shame on you for allowing someone to use your commentary space to troll for hits.

And now, here is a question (that will not be answered). Since we know (from his own mouth) that Dvorak makes up stuff to get hits, and you guys give him space to do so, just how many OTHER writers do you employ that do exactly the same? I don't know the answer to this, so the best bet is for me to take what I read in MarketWatch with a big, big grain of salt. I think I'll be reluctant to come here to read in the future, and if I do I probably won't believe it.
