Dvorak trolls: ‘Apple should pull the plug on the iPhone’

“The hype over the unreleased iPhone has actually increased over the past month despite the fact that nobody has seen or used the device. This, if nothing else, proves the power of branding and especially the power of brand loyalty,” John C. Dvorak blathers for MarketWatch.

“It’s the loyalists who keep promoting this device as if it is going to be anything other than another phone is a crowded market. And it’s exactly the crowded market aspect of this which analysts seem to be ignoring,” the bloated gasbag vents.

The blowhard babbles, “The problem here is that while Apple can play the fashion game as well as any company, there is no evidence that they can play it fast enough. These phones go in an out of style so fast that unless Apple has half a dozen variants in the pipeline, its phone, even if immediately successful, will be passé within 3 months.”

“What Apple risks here is its reputation as a hot company that can do no wrong. If it’s smart it will call the iPhone a ‘reference design’ and pass it to some suckers to build with someone else’s marketing budget. Then it can wash its hands of any marketplace failures,” the admitted hit whore prattles.

The Round Mound of Unsound expounds, “It should do that immediately before it’s too late. Samsung might be a candidate. Otherwise I’d advise people to cover their eyes. You are not going to like what you’ll see.”

MacDailyNews Take: Whatever, John. Have you no shame? MarketWatch should pull the plug on John C. Dvorak if they value their integrity.

Obviously, to everyone but Dvorak, Apple’s iPhone is a blank slate that is extremely malleable; Apple can change the software, and hence the device already in people’s hands, at will. So much for it becoming passé.

  1. Clearly a troll.

All the phone bosses have said they expect smart phone demand to explode over the next few years.

And phone design? Look how long it takes for new versions of the RAZR to emerge, and they still look the same as they did 3 years ago.

  2. “This, if nothing else, proves the power of branding and especially the power of brand loyalty,”

or it proves bloggers and analysyts cant shutup about it hmmmm, taking the easy option to get site hits, such as this very article

  3. Just to add through my tears/laughter:

I don’t think anyone is exactly ready for what iPhone portends to be. This is a small computer with a great deal of possibility. It is also very easy to use– easy in the sense that when you use this sort of thing, you want to keep using it.

Holy shit is iPhone gonna’ clean up. I don’t mean to be vulgar, but it just hit me that this is going to be very big. I’ve been on the fence for a while, but no more. iPhone is a new platform and it’s going to clean house.

Ballmer is going to squirt a brick. Pass the Xbox-lax. It’s going to hurt.

  4. So Dvorak’s reasoning that cell phones go in and out of style in a few months time is solid. But Apple is the kind of company that can change the way markets work. For example, the iPod and the iTunes store have both done this. Is it too far fetched to think that Apple can do change the cell phone market in a similar way?

  5. The same logic that applies to licensing OS X applies here. While apple could probably make a bundle of cash licensing the touch screen interface, without tight integration between hardware and software, the whole thing will spiral downwards into mediocrity.
On the other hand, Apple is going to have a hard time keeping up with new generations of air interfaces as they roll out. I suspect the reason the iPhone is 2.5G is that the chipsets are sufficiently commodized that they can be integrated by any device manufacturer. Until the same is true of 3G and 4G, not to mention WiMax and whatever the whitespace standard turns out to be )(802.22?), Apple will be playing catch up in that regard.

  6. Thank GOD Dvorak came out against the iPhone! Can you imagine the bad Karma if he’d actually liked it? If he said “iPhone is Sooper!” then that would be the death-knell. Who’s going to iCal this article and bring it up next year when Apple is still having trouble meeting demand for the iPhone?

  7. He’s still missing the point, the iPhone isn’t the RAZR of the day!! The entire iPhone UI can change with SOFTWARE updates. To keep up with whatever someone else comes up with, they just release a free download with new features.

  8. I know its the cool thing to do to ridicule Dvorak, and while its true Dvorak tends to put a negative slant on almost everything Apple does, he does have a pretty good feel for the pulse of the tech industry. He may say things we don’t want to hear, but he brings up valid points from time to time.
