Dwindling Apple iMac inventories hint at new models soon?
Thursday, April 03, 2008 - 02:27 PM EST

"iMac stocks across Apple's reseller chains are running down, suggesting the company is closing in on a refresh for its range of all-in-one desktops," Andy Space reports for 9 to 5 Mac.

"If whispers emerging from Apple partners are to be believed, the product upgrade may not be immediate - stocks of the product still exist, but supplies of the product are wearing thin. This suggests the product may see an update as soon as this month," Space reports.

Apple's next round of iMacs are expected to receive "Intel's new 45-nanometer Penryn processor inside the machines. The Mac mini is expected to receive a similar treatment, with the addition of an improved graphics chip," Space reports.

Maybe there will be an option for matte displays? Fingers crossed!

Apr 03, 08 - 01:31 pm Comment from: Mac Man by Choice

They can't come soon enough! Geesh...this has taken a while!

Apr 03, 08 - 01:31 pm Comment from: jimbo12monkeys

Make it quad !

Apr 03, 08 - 01:36 pm Comment from: jimbo12monkeys

I forgot!
And with a better 20'' monitor, please...

Apr 03, 08 - 01:38 pm Comment from: Bad Epson

Multi-touch track pad and illumination built into the keyboard, please. Also, a low-end key accessible zoom built into the iSight.
A little thinner would be nice. A slot for
a replaceable flash drive.

Hopefully Apple will learn it's lesson and put TRUE 8-Bit display's in the new models. Apple's putting 6-Bit displays in the current generation and trying to pass them off as 8-Bit displays is shameful.

I bought my 24" iMac in November and it is terrific. It gets used all of the time by my family. I imagine that I might have a touch of envy when the new iMac models are released, but no regrets about my purchase. After getting by with a hand-me-down Dell for several years after my 1996 PowerMac bit the bullet, the last five months of Windows-free computing have been wonderful. I'd rather have an old Mac than a new PC any day.

Hopefully will Apple will deliver a 30" iMac one of these days. When it comes to display real estate, bigger is better. And that would be a great display size for convergence as a second HD TV.

Quad Core AND Touch screen?!?

Apr 03, 08 - 01:51 pm Comment from: eWorldian

Can we PLEASE get an iMac that shoots little foam missiles at salespeople when they enter my office?
Maybe use the iSight to "zero-in" on the "target"?

Apr 03, 08 - 01:52 pm Comment from: eWorldian

Oh yeah... and TRUE multiple display function.
I've got ALOT of salespeople entering my office.

Apr 03, 08 - 01:53 pm Comment from: twodales

I dwindled two iMacs myself last night at the Natick ma store

-should have got your end flew envy shot

"Quad Core AND Touch screen?!?"

Apr 03, 08 - 02:31 pm Comment from: Thorin

Apple! Please put a faster GPU in the iMac. Please!

Apr 03, 08 - 02:32 pm Comment from: JC

They need to get the S-IPS panels back in the 20" models like what they had in the previous white iMacs.

Apr 03, 08 - 02:48 pm Comment from: Ampar

It's just another obvious sign of global warming.

" . . . an iMac that shoots little foam missiles at salespeople . . ."

C'mon. Don't wuss out. Caps of muriatic acid that explode on contact with human skin. Not enough to wound. Just enough to leave an indelible mark. So you can track them like deer.

Apr 03, 08 - 02:59 pm Comment from: Madmax

Hopefully the lack of ram as standard will be at least doubled.

Apr 03, 08 - 03:09 pm Comment from: It's About Time

Better video board and larger shared L2 Cache would be welcomed changes.

Apr 03, 08 - 03:10 pm Comment from: Ray

The monitors will display 1,000,001 colors. Apple will claim that is millions of colors. Frivolous lawsuit will follow.

Just my $0.02

Yeah, you're right.
How about a Paintball Gun... it would leave a mark, and also "sting" a little. Maybe it would make them think twice about stepping foot into my office. LOL

Apr 03, 08 - 03:13 pm Comment from: Rich Apple person

No new features except thinner and new chips

I WON'T buy a 6 bit. unless it's an AMIGA.Hey what time is it? 1985? Maybe I want the smaller size mac. It's also time for blu-ray!

Apr 03, 08 - 03:31 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

A new Mac mini would be nice.
Especially with faster graphics. The current GPU is a DOG.

I'm itching to connect one of those puppies into my HDTV for livingroom picture viewing, web surfing and even some gaming. Call of Duty is trippy on a 40" monitor! ;^)

twice as less?

Apr 03, 08 - 03:43 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Call of Duty is trippy on a 40" monitor!"

If you dominated Call of Duty network play, would that be a LAN mine?

Apr 03, 08 - 03:44 pm Comment from: Shogun

@Ray, Please keep your tuppence to yourself. Your sign-off adds nothing at all.

Apr 03, 08 - 04:08 pm Comment from: Non Ray

Do ALL of Ray's opinions have 2¢ value?

Will he EVER figure out how to type a '¢' symbol??

Why DO people insist on valuing their comments???

Apr 03, 08 - 04:11 pm Comment from: Rich person

No new features except faster chips and 20Gb larger HDs.

Apple doesn't update hardware that fast. Too expensive.

Apr 03, 08 - 04:14 pm Comment from: Keith the Vegetable Protein Man from Brazil

I missed the old G4 iMac, so I bought one.

It's not as good as the new one.

I just wish nostalgia was as good as it used to be.

Apr 03, 08 - 04:26 pm Comment from: Lilochris

They should change. The screen picture is terrible. My 17 inch Core 2 Duo seems to look more vivid even without adjusting it's contrast via the keyboard shortcut.

No glare, wider viewing angles, matte screen.

The Only thing I like about the newer iMac is just that it's Aluminum.

Apr 03, 08 - 05:27 pm Comment from: Ray likes farm animals

just my $0.02

Apr 03, 08 - 05:30 pm Comment from: dolita

Hopefully TRUE 8bit (NO MORE LIES, APPLE!!)
and get rid of that FVCKIN GLOSSY screen!

Apr 03, 08 - 06:54 pm Comment from: marcg

Can we please stop with the matte vs glossy battle already? Please? Some people prefer glossy and some prefer matte. I have the 24inch 2.8 and the picture is perfect across the entire screen. No glare (except for about 30 minutes in the middle of the day when I am at school), no dead pixels, no bad stuff period. I really don't see Apple doing anything different this soon after the last release other then the minimum required to switch to the new processors. I agree that the 20 inch screens are inferior but we also need to realize that people can't see millions of colors anyway. I think the thing that makes them inferior is the limited viewing angles. also, there is nothing wrong with the video card that is in there. I run both Mac and Windows games at the highest settings and they run just fine. I don't care if I'm not getting 120 frames per second because again humans can't see more than about 40. Finally, what is the obsession with thin? The current thinness is great.
Thanks for listening.

Dear marcg:

I HEART you.

Apr 04, 08 - 06:19 am Comment from: Sky

@MG

Apple can put this glossy battle to rest by offering a matte option so everyone wins.

@JC

I totally agree with your S-IPS comment. To me, this is a bigger deal for photo editing than the glossy screen issue (although I prefer matte). I waited for the 20" aluminum iMacs to come out last year and ended up finding an older used model instead. Sky

You're delusional. There's not an iMac in the entire lineup that has a GPU worth a damn. Same as it ever was. What games are you running? Solitaire? Minesweeper?

Apr 04, 08 - 10:07 am Comment from: OldMacfan

Minesweeper 3D is coming to Vista with service pack 2 it will run on present day graphics cards, but only in 2D mode...snerk...LOL

Apr 04, 08 - 10:20 am Comment from: eWorldian

I was talking to a salesperson at my local Apple (re-seller) store.
Told him I was thinking of getting a 24-inch iMac. They didn't have any in stock though.
He told me to wait... that there was indeed an updated version coming out very soon!

Apr 04, 08 - 11:34 am Comment from: ApplePi

@eWorldian.

Your reseller is basing his opinion on supposition. He has no advance knowledge.

Besides, the word "soon" is subjective and open to interpretation. A new is ALWAYS coming "soon"
