Early Microsoft Zune customer greeted with Zune ‘Installation Error’
Monday, November 13, 2006 - 01:25 PM EST

"By coincidence i got my hands early on an Microsoft Zune, bought as a regular customer at BestBuy in Union City Landing shopping centre. They dont seem to care that the release day is next tuesday. They werent displayed in the store itself but i asked a salesmen if i could pre order a Zune. Then he told me they were already in and he could sell one to me. And so he did," FLX-Tech.net reports. "Can someone explain me why it says 'Hello from Seattle' on the back?

FLX-Tech.net begain to install Microsoft's Zune software. What happened next fails to elicit from us even a nano bit of surprise:

FLX-Tech.net reports, "And this is where i leave you right now. The Zune already drawn its first blood; me. I can't install it for some reason, and i tried everything. If you have any suggestions or ideas, please leave a comment."

Full article, with photos of FLX-Tech's brown Zune, here.

MacDailyNews Take: Predictably, FLX-Tech.net has been zuned. We do have an obvious suggestion/idea: Return that piece of zune and go get an iPod and install iTunes instead. Duh.

Looks like the model in the photo is screaming in pain at the mere thought of trying to install the software for it.

Why do they look like they're having bad public sex in that screenshot?

Nov 13, 06 - 01:32 pm Comment from: yadayada

It is from the King of authorization. It might be phoning home and finding out it's not supposed to exist yet!

Nov 13, 06 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Is MS smart enough to have put code in its Zune installer to prevent it from being installed prior to release date? My guess: NO!

Nov 13, 06 - 01:35 pm Comment from: ChubbaWubba

Or else it look as though they've all just been shot . . . by the guy in the tower . . . why it's . . . it's . . . it's BALLMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nov 13, 06 - 01:47 pm Comment from: Spark

Yeah, what's with that image. If the software hasn't successfully been installed, then that image has to be something supplied by Redmond. Bizarre to say the least.

Nov 13, 06 - 01:57 pm Comment from: Lurker_PC

And so the problems officially begin...

Peace.

Nov 13, 06 - 01:59 pm Comment from: Ragu

Zune you will be able to squirt toxic gas from your little brown box and infect another little brown box. And Zune that little brown box will squirt another and another and another and you will feel right at home in your Windows world.

Nov 13, 06 - 02:02 pm Comment from: PC Apologist

From the log, it looks like it could be an error setting up the System Restore data. Which is actually rather responsible of MS. No trail of bread crumbs = no installation.

Nov 13, 06 - 02:11 pm Comment from: Bob

I emailed him, said he was ZWND! (And you can quote me)
MW "better", as in an iPod would be better

Nov 13, 06 - 02:15 pm Comment from: macromancer

They are screaming in pain because someone threw a chair at them.

Nov 13, 06 - 02:16 pm Comment from: Rutger

Now that is a seriously confusing picture in that installer. What's are they trying to say with it? Who is the target audience? S&M;lovers? This picture is WEIRD in the contect of a simple software installer.

Second: No suprises here. It's Microsoft we're talking about. They could screw up the concept of a hammer.

Ohhh the smell, put it back into the box!

Can someone explain me why it says 'Hello from Seattle' on the back?

Probably because Apple's product packaging contains the phrase "Made by Apple in California".

Jimbo von Winskinheimer said: "Is MS smart enough to have put code in its Zune installer to prevent it from being installed prior to release date? My guess: NO!"

But they are dumb enough to release clients (Zune) before their server is ready.

Nov 13, 06 - 03:06 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

If the Zune software is not loading because it's not tomorrow yet, that STILL blows. iTunes does not care if I use the store or not. I can buy and iPod and NEVER use the store and rip my CDs and enjoy them any ol' time. Why in the world would Zune software be crippled to prohibit activation until tomorrow? What if I don't want any of your Zune marketplace tunes?
Bad bad bad design, execution, user-friendlyness...

Hey, has anyone tried setting their system clock to the 14th and trying to load it?
Or are you gonna just beat the rush and return it now?

OMG... IS THAT ASIAN GIRL BEING RAPED?!?!?! D:

Nov 13, 06 - 06:48 pm Comment from: Jim

I think the photo of the two girls re-enacting a scene from Hostel is to do with the fact there is an errorwith the installation. The fact that the Micro$oft Design Dept. (if there is one) were asked to produce photography and artwork for this speaks volumes.

iTunes+iPod=User-Friendliness.

Zune=Misery.

MW: picture: you just can't make this sh*t up.

Nov 13, 06 - 07:00 pm Comment from: irish dude

haha, somebody replied on the article's page sayin 'Seems like that asian girl in the last screenshot is really suffering the error... Was that iamge selected intentionally?'
