Eight new features to expect in Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 2.2 update
Thursday, October 30, 2008 - 06:19 PM EST

"One of the great things about the iPhone is the regular software updates. Free and automatic improvements are piped, hot and steaming, to your pocket computer," Charlie Sorrel reports for Wired.

"We don't know exactly when the next version of the iPhone operating system (v2.2) will arrive, but the leaks are springing fast, and the new OS looks like a useful update -- full of new toys," Sorrel reports.

Here's what the rumors say so far:
• Google Street View
• Direct Podcast Downloads
• Rating Applications on Deletion
• Line-In Support
• Emoji Emoticons
• Location Sharing
• Safari Tweaks
• Copy and Paste*

*Sorrel writes, "Kidding! You didn't fall for that one, did you?"

what's the big deal about copy and paste?

Oct 30, 08 - 05:34 pm Comment from: Scarbro

Direct Podcast download is great. WTF with copy & paste?

Oct 30, 08 - 05:35 pm Comment from: viktor

I used to have Palm, later a iPaq (hp's pocket pc) and then a Black Berry, all of them with copy and paste function.... but they still crap...

P&C;can help, a lot of time I wanted to copy a SMS and paste it on another SMS, but the iPhone gives me so much functionality that I will rather prefer an iPhone with out copy and paste that any other N95 or Bold or any other bad imitation of the iPhone.

Oct 30, 08 - 05:36 pm Comment from: Skabeetle

I know 10 people that would buy one if they could simply text a photo to a friend. It's not a big deal for me or my wife but a LOT of people love that feature and won't sacrifice it for another phone, even an iphone. Just add it Apple!!

Oct 30, 08 - 05:44 pm Comment from: spliceguys

I'd rather have copy and paste than the whole lot of the rest of them..

Oct 30, 08 - 05:51 pm Comment from: Bartleby

The only time I need copy-paste is when someone sends me a MMS text message that I have to go to the web to check. So give me MMS and I wouldn't need copy/paste.

Oct 30, 08 - 06:03 pm Comment from: cheapskate dave

Not a funny joke... toying with our copy/paste emotions.

Not an impressive list.

Oct 30, 08 - 06:06 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Copy and Paste?
That should be FIRST on the list.

Without that, it's really a deal breaker for me.

Oct 30, 08 - 06:18 pm Comment from: Spartacus

For us Europeans, SMS is important. SMS handling in the iphone is to basic for such an advanced device. NO charater count, impossible to forward a message, impossible to delete a single message without deleting the whole conversation, etc. My 6 years old nokia does this quite well!!!! And how about video recording? Is that so difficult to add this feature??

Oct 30, 08 - 06:33 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

The only thing I care about on that list, is cut & paste, and it's only a punchline. :(

Oct 30, 08 - 06:50 pm Comment from: Peter

"• Rating Applications on Deletion"

Oh that's useful.

Let's see...I'm deleting the app. Means I don't want it anymore. Hm. Wonder what my rating will be?

Duh.

Oct 30, 08 - 07:11 pm Comment from: LinkRus

How about being able to send a link to a contact via SMS or email? - No big deal to do surely! or have i missed something?

Oct 30, 08 - 07:30 pm Comment from: T-Dog

OK, so has Apple actually come out and said why there is no C&P;or MMS. Has anyone interviewed an Apple rep and pinned them down on these issues? I thought that the C&P;was not a 'priority', yet are we to believe that the people of the world have just been clamoring for 'Emjoi Emoticons' & 'Rating Applications upon Deleting'? Come on, Apple - do the right thing and stop wasting the time of your developers and get with the frickin' program.

Oct 30, 08 - 07:42 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

Could we just make the iPhone 3G work with the various chargers I've acquired over the years ESPECIALLY THE DOCK IN MY CAR! The damned thing plays, but won't charge. My iPod 3G, Nano, and iPhone 2G all charged properly.

Apple somethings aren't so easy to change.

Oct 30, 08 - 07:46 pm Comment from: El Guapo

Nothing on the list is a big deal to me except copy/paste. The rest is just BS. I would rather see:

Copy/paste
MMS
Some way to link maps to an address in an SMS
Ability to edit notes on the desktop
Folders for applications (I have about 8 screens of apps and 2 taps is much easier than 6-7 swipes to get to an app I want
Ability to add info from an email/SMS/mms to a contact or calendar

Oct 30, 08 - 07:46 pm Comment from: MobileAdmin

Not one improvement for business users. Until Apple decides to include whole device encryption and better device management via their own solution / intergration with Mobile Device Manager it will stay firmly in the personal usage only state for most large companies who could care less about providing more entertainment options.

Oct 30, 08 - 08:04 pm Comment from: Macintosh

I don't think of Copy/Paste or MMS as a big deal personally, but it sure would sell a lot more iPhones. The secretary at my office is considering waiting for the BlackBerry Storm and the only reason is because of Copy/Paste. I don't think she's aware of the lack of MMS.

Maybe Jobs & Co. feel MMS are so small and crappy looking that nobody should use them anyways, but some people's lives revolve around that, and not everybody has a phone with email capabilities, especially capabilities like the iPhone.

I'm sure they will introduce Copy/Paste, but since it's taking so long, it's probably going to be something better than just normal Copy/Paste... We'll have to wait and see.

I think I've talked her into getting an iPhone though...

Oct 30, 08 - 08:08 pm Comment from: bizlaw

What's so big about copy & paste?

How about I want to go to an address in the location field in Calendar or an email, but instead of tapping on the location to get a Google Map or being able to copy & paste it, I have to remember it and retype it.

Not a good thing to do while driving, so usually you have to (or should) pull over to put in the address.

Would be nicer to simply tap on it and have Maps do the rest.

Oct 30, 08 - 08:26 pm Comment from: Jubei

PUSH!

Oct 30, 08 - 09:26 pm Comment from: MikeR

@ Macintosh
That darn secretary was contemplating the same thing about a month ago. I'd fire the bitch!

Oct 30, 08 - 09:31 pm Comment from: Jay

How about the ability to edit Word and Excel documents! As a business user this is equally as important as copy and paste. Not to mention more Calendar functionality.

Oct 30, 08 - 09:35 pm Comment from: Lame

"what's the big deal about copy and paste?"

or when you want to take a phone number from a web page or email and dial it (when it's not automatically fomatted so the phone thinks it's a number) or post a business name or other search from an email into safari or maps.

Forget streetview, do turn by turn mapping!

Forget podcast downloads, that's the kind of thing you can leave to 3rd party developers.

Do Copy and Paste instead!

Oct 30, 08 - 09:59 pm Comment from: rickw

copy and paste is very important. i recently had an address that I wanted to put in the address book that i found on safari. there was no way to get it from the web page to the address book.

there must be something about the memory sharing why apple has decided not to do this. they do not allow multitasking, except for with the music player. is it possible that this releasing of memory from programs preempts copy and paste? i am certain that they could make a clipboard with a protected memory feature that doesn't get ported over to itunes.

anyone know...?

Oct 30, 08 - 10:16 pm Comment from: spacescout87

Where the F**K is PUSH support??????
Apple / Steve Jobs PROMISED this by the end of September...last time I checked, its the end of October!

Oct 30, 08 - 10:27 pm Comment from: Not Anybody

I don't know what the big deal is with SMS and MMS. If you can send email for free on the data network, why pay extra money for a text message? It's amazing that the smallest user of bandwidth on the cell networks (text messages) costs so much extra money.

Oct 30, 08 - 10:59 pm Comment from: goblin

even the 128k Mac had copy and paste without multitasking!

Oct 31, 08 - 12:00 am Comment from: bon

Copy and paste is a near necessity. It's been on computers for ages. I don't get why Apple won't implement it.

To all the ignorant whiners about SMS:
Texting sucks in all its forms. It's an expensive "service" offered by telcos just make money for doing nothing. Besides, with the iPhone you can just send an email for free.

Oct 31, 08 - 12:49 am Comment from: The Other Steve

Search search search searching searched searcher searcher searchy searchareano

I keep • searching • for it but I can't find it.

iPhone needs search.

Search contacts, calendar, email . . . and my car keys.

Oct 31, 08 - 03:31 am Comment from: Moo

I'd *like* to use my iPhone as a laptop replacement, but;

I work with numerous web-based forms.
I need to copy and paste information such as names, addresses, phone and serial numbers between forms submitted by my customers into forms used by my company.

Currently, if I wish to use my iPhone at work, I need to take a pen and pad with me, scribble down 50-60 characters (per client- and hoping I don't screw something up in the process), then re-type that information into 3 other web-based forms.

Try doing that 20 times each day, and you'll know why I'd like copy & paste.

"Not a good thing to do while driving, so usually you have to (or should) pull over to put in the address."
You shouldn't be doing anything on your phone whilst driving.

Oct 31, 08 - 05:34 am Comment from: Lord Fontleroy

OK - I for one would LOVE Copy and Paste functionality on the iphone. I would also love to see a proper implementation of bluetooth for sending/receiving contacts, A2DP etc.

If people are soo worried about MMS and proper SMS, jailbreak you phone and buy the appropriate software. I have and it works just fine. Landscape SMS, correction on and off, forwarding, great filing etc etc and MMS in and out and $10 is hardly going to break the bank regardless of whether or not you think it should be in the base software.

Wonderful.

NOW FIX THE ***** Bluetooth and C&P;ALREADY!

where is the firewire support?? godammit apple, i have so many firewire equipment that i want to use on my iphone! and where is the mid range iphone? don't force me to make clones using your iphone osx!

Oct 31, 08 - 08:02 am Comment from: DanielM

Are you willing to pay for MMS?

Because it won't be for free.
http://www.intomobile.com/2008/06/25/att-preparing-to-bring-mms-to-iphone-3g.html

AT&T;, unlike Rogers in Canada, chargers users for incoming text messages whether you pick them up or not. So it would be a good idea to pay the extra $20 a month for unlimited text messaging.

Oct 31, 08 - 08:14 am Comment from: JoshtheiMacGuy

GASP! MS spends more of each dollars on R&D;than Apple does. So what do they get for their money?

For each $1 of sales Apple spends:

- 1.9 cents on Advertising
- 3.3 cents on R&D;For each $1 of sales Microsoft spends:

- 2.6 cents on Advertising
- 13.9 cents on R&D;

Oct 31, 08 - 08:15 am Comment from: JoshtheiMacGuy

Emoji Emoticons.

I'm so happy I could just .........

Oct 31, 08 - 08:15 am Comment from: El Guapo

First of all, get you acronyms straight: SMS is texting only and MMS inludes pictures
Secondly, SENDING a picture via email works, but what if someone (non-iPhone user) wants to send you a picture? You can't RECEIVE pictures via MMS.

We need MMS!

Oct 31, 08 - 08:18 am Comment from: drcaddy

I have a theory: MMS is not Apple's fault, but AT&T;'s. They cost extra for my phone to send and receive, and I'm willing to bet that Steve Jobs wanted EVERYTHING to be unlimited. AT&T;probably doesn't want to include that since they make $1 or so on every pic sent. Is that correct? I guess I haven't checked for a while, but I thought that was the case.

Oct 31, 08 - 08:21 am Comment from: Peruchito

MMS uses the data packets normally used for SMS or audio (yes talking), instead of the data packets designated for ... data (internet and email). it is out dated tech, used to bring photo sharing for low end devices. and it will probably disappear once smart phones catch on. but in essence, mms is still data (though the means to transport is different) which could be transfered to email, or perhaps a photosharing app, via the server. att or apple's servers could be the gate way between phones with only mms and an photosharing app. that server can then change the method of transportation. ofcourse they would charge you per use, but you already get charged for mms anyways.

$20 a month for unlimted text messages!!!!! I get 2000 messages a month included for NO EXTRA CHARGE with Verizon.

Oct 31, 08 - 08:30 am Comment from: thomas

Since it's possible to delete Audiobooks as well as videos directly on the iPod Touch, I just wonder why on earth this great feature won't work with podcasts and audiotracks???

(Swipe - right + hit delete)

Also, why is it so hard to implement coverflow for each playlist?

Oct 31, 08 - 08:33 am Comment from: Anne

the iPod Touch gets easily fragmented when adding and deleting lots of files (large podcasts, audiobooks or vids). Apple should definitely come out with a defragmentation tool since I'm tired of a full restore when things start to hiccup.

Oct 31, 08 - 08:35 am Comment from: volker

Yes, coverflow based on the playlist instead of the masterlib is a MUST. And they should finally bring on crossfades gawddammit.

Oct 31, 08 - 08:37 am Comment from: macster

Of course copy and paste is needed

But I am most frustrated with the lack of search or sort functionality in email. When you get as many emails as I do a day, you need to be able to quickly sort or search by sender or date. My old Treo could do that just fine.

Also, I would like to be able to arrange the applications on my"desktop" via iTunes

Oct 31, 08 - 08:51 am Comment from: steve516

MMS is clearly related to AT&T;and their data plans for the iPhone. Apple's solution is for you to send an email with an attachment, and for the most part, this works fine for me. I also prefer the email solution in a sense because I can see it on my iMac at home as well. It might be nice to be able to transfer SMS chats to the computer also.

I would like to be able to forward an SMS or part of a conversation to someone else. Character count could be useful... but not critical for me. Being able to change the alert tones for SMS like ring tones, that would be nice.

I'd really like for them to fix MobileMe... it periodically wipes out all my contacts on my phone, which leads me to panic that it is wiping out all my contacts in the cloud and on my iMac. Very frustrating.

@JoshtheiMacGuy

You just think that there is "no extra charge". They just add it all to your bill up front, whether you're going to use it or not. No one gives you anything for free when there's money to be made.

Oct 31, 08 - 09:23 am Comment from: DanielM

@ Anne

Unless somebody can prove otherwise, I wouldn't defragment a flash drive.
